The Archers Blog - Life After April 8

Archers Fan - Let's start using this one if on April 9 the official BBC blog no longer supports posting comments.  Hope it doesn't come to this.

  1. Just making sure that my link really does work. I've saved this onto my Bookmarks bar so one click does it all for me. Thank you so much, Ruthy. This might just be a lifes-saver.

    1. Hi Enzed: I agree with you that Mustardland is not really pleasant. I checked it out a couple of time since the threat of the official blog closing. It's just about 1/2 step up from twitter and facebook. I don't find it friendly and bloggers are just trying to get attention on their latest comment. Make sense?

  2. Wonderful, just got in without any more signing up or anything (perhaps because I haven't signed out on the first one). Thanks Ruthy, you're a star!

  9. (13) - I am disgusted at the mean pettiness of Whoever for not keeping to what they said -ie that they were closing the blog on 8th April which is bad enough but then deciding to close it early .
    That is very underhand .

  10. (14) -I take it back.
    Apologies BBC .
I have just checked and we have a new blog.

  11. Well done Ruthy. Looked in this morning to find our BBC blog closed, but a new one open for the last week, and also read that you have opened a new independent blog, so here I am again, all ready to go when the very last blog closes. Phew - what a relief!

  12. An interesting article for those who haven't read it. Particularly the comments which follow. Déjà vu and all that! Thank you Ruthy for providing this facility.

    1. Thanks, BB. It read like they were describing the current situation. I wonder if the BBC will cover the topic on this week's Feedback show still. And if we will have a chance to hear some of the comments of those interviewed. Would be nice to have their efforts acknowledged in some way.

  13. MrsP here. Good morning all !

    I am however worried.
Others have spoken of the cat at the top of the blog.
    I see no cat !
When Ruthy first opened this blog, every comment posted and published came into my inbox.
Since we have reconvened that has not happened. I do not get any notice that there is mail waiting.
I think it was Archerphile who helped me to get this blog onto my home page, and I successfully did so.
Now enzed speaks of bookmarking. I am clued up enough to understand that it might be a similar process, and will try.
But once the BBC blog is finished how will I know that a new one is being released.
    Help please.....MrsP, confused of Ambridge

    1. MrsP - at the top of this page, you should see an arrow pointing left with a title next to it ARCHERS FAN BLOG. If you click on that arrow, it will bring you to the page with the pretty cat. On that page, let's call it the Home page of the Archers Fan Blog, you will see links to this posting, and the one I started in January. Don't worry, you are doing great!

  15. Ok folks...... I am in and I have successfully bookmarked it.

Perhaps I will need to go into that box and see what's there rather than getting notifications.

    I'm learning !

    1. Hello Mrs Pin. I tried ticking the box below where you type a message saying ‘notify me’. What happened was that every time someone posted a message here, I got an email where I could read it. I don’t really want every single post filling up my email account (as interesting as the posts are!) so I unticked it. Now I just check in here once or twice a day from ‘my favourites’ and catch up on what has been posted since the last time......which is exactly what I used to do on the BBC blogs.

  16. Nearly finished packing for the big trip tomorrow. Having a glass of wine before bed and checking in here. So many recognisable names. So pleased to see lots of carry over bloggers. Question now is how do we attract new bloggers to this site. Also wondering how we are going to stay 'on topic'. Or does it matter if we don't?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Yes Archerphile I have ticked that notify me box but it hasn't ( notified me ). However I have now seen the cat, thank you Ruthy.

Can I please ask - not Mrs Pin.
Don't like that at all. Sorry !

I don't mind the lack of notification, actually prefer it. And like Archerphile I can now check in at will as it's ow bookmarked.

Also hope you don't mind the abbr. 'MrsP'.

May I just point out that you probably clicked on reply (to Enzed) with your last post.
If you want to make a new comment, rather than an answer, you have to scroll down to the bottom and click on 'comment'.

  19. Thanks HG. Yep, that's what I did.

Thank you for pointing it out.

Archerphile, yes I realised, too late, that I should have left something between the words, but the spacer did not seem to want to accommodate. As soon as I saw what appeared I guessed straight away that it would appear as Mrs Pin.
    Mrs Pin ?
I wished I had put Mrs Perkins instead. Too late now tho '

Yes HG most of the side effects have gone now, apart from the extreme tiredness.

  20. It is rather strange - Mrs P answered a comment of mine here earlier today - then I replied to apologise for calling her ‘Mrs Pin’ because I had read her new user name as that instead of ‘Mrs P in Ambridge’. But now, 2 or 3 hour’s later, both posts have disappeared. Are we being censored,? surely not for totally innocuous comments!

Mrs P, I hope your trip to the doctor went well and you enjoyed your walks. Now I must get the hang of this, er, 'bookmarking', because as it is, I have to click the link you gave on the closed BBC 'comments' blog ( so many pages to scroll back & so tedious...)AND possibly/probably the old blogs will all be wiped from the site come 8/4

Some things to say about TA the last few days, so will just trim down to, 'Jim, no, some marriages aren't worth fighting for, it's over. Your son doesn't understand what went wrong, & your D in L can't/won'tspell it out to him in any way that makes sense; the marriage is broken.' Oh, to anyone who's not endeared to Emma these days, ' Give the woman a break ! 39. In case anybody is wondering, that pink blob next to my name is supposed to be a ball of yarn and knitting needles. As I am a knitting fanatic I thought it would make a suitable picture for me but not sure now!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I worked out your 'pink blob' right away. Being able to add pictures to our names is one advantage that our soon to be defunct blog can't offer. I wonder what other people will choose for theirs?

I love knitting too - preferably small things because I get fed up if it takes too long. I tend to go into production making glove puppets for the shoeboxes at Christmas but I've recently discovered circular needles and am hooked. So I'm building up a good collection of beanie hats, also for the shoeboxes.

Does anybody knit in Ambridge? I vaguely recall Kirsty mentioning it recently but I can't think of anyone else. Something for Shula to take up during her lonely evenings when she realises that life without Alistair is even more boring than life with Alistair, perhaps? She could knit Jazzer some ear muffs to wear when Jim is playing the piano. (Has he tried G major scales yet?)

    2. I almost wish we had up arrows here as I would have given one to you OWIAS! I usually knit jumpers for my two little grandsons in France, just finished a fairisle sweater with four colours in a row - took ages! But just been told my son is being sent to Dubai for 5 years so no more jumpers will be needed and fairisle one will now be useless! Feeling very depressed about their move as I will be nearly 80 when they return to France and I will have missed the boys growing up years. Doubt I shall be able to afford air fares to visit. So my Archers ‘friends and family’ are going to become even more important, thank goodness for Ruthy ❤️

  46. (73) Good morning everyone. Well! Have just tried to click on to our last 'official' blog subject to enjoy our final comments before it disappears, only to find that it has already disappeared. So, presumably, that's it - so disappointing. And thank heavens that we have this lovely lifeboat that Ruthie has cleverly provided for us.

Thank you too, Archerphile for pointing out that we can add a signature icon to our comment - helps to pick out which comment is which. So, as I am deeply embedded in a forest, I thought that Sammy the squirrel might be very appropriate - my dogs love to chase them, but, thankfully, the squirrels can climb and the dogs can't!

I'm thinking that LanJan's idea of numbering our posts is an excellent one, as it makes referring back to a previous post so much easier, so I have numbered this one (counting down posts and replies from LanJan's (55) ) in case anyone else thinks it's a good idea too, although I'm not sure whether we should just count the original post or whether we should count the replies too, as someone might want to refer back to those as well as the original.

Now keeping on topic, I was rather worried about the appearance of Alison Steadman's character in last night's episode of T.A., trailing massive clouds of women's "issues" with her. Not just one, but a whole bunch of them - I don't think that it fits in at all well with the Archer's ethos.

  47. The blog has gone already - at least on my computer!
I can't believe it, there's nothing, not even the old closed blogs.
Anyone else or am I in the middle of a nightmare?

    ReplyDelete
  48. Hi Suz - posting at the same time! I just can't believe that they've not only closed the blog before April 8, but also removed it completely, so now no one can catch up or follow the links to here. I am disgusted at the way the BBC has deliberately mistreated and ignored us. It wouldn't have cost a cent to leave the closed blog available to read - at least for a time.

The question of numbering: It will be difficult when several people post at the same time - you and I would have taken the same number just now. As far as replies go, we could take the post number and add 'a', 'b', 'c' etc. but would still have the same problem if posting simultaneously.
I will only use the reply function if I comment very quickly, otherwise the reply will hardly be noticed if it is way back.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I take it all back - the blog is back again - sorry BBC (this time!)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, me too, HG, panic over - for a day or two anyway! I take your point about the numbering system, so we'll have to do a bit of scrolling around, which isn't too difficult on a desktop like mine, but perhaps not so easy on a tablet. Perhaps having an identifying logo might help though - if we can remember which belongs to who :D

  54. So far, we have all been trying so hard to get here and sort ourselves out that there have not been too many comments about TA itself, except for Suz mentioning Alison Steadman last night. I don’t mind that at all, it’s lovely to feel unrestrained from having to follow a particular designated topic.
But how do others feel? Should we stick to TA from next week onwards, does anyone feel the need for a Topic Title, or can we just comment on anything we have noticed in the programme or elsewhere (TV, books, etc etc). I don’t want to bore folk by droning on about matters outside TA but would be v. Interested to hear what others think.

  57. Mrs. P. Glad you've managed to change your name and add a photo. I've just been to Minchinhampton common for a walk with my son's dog ( see profile pic). So lovely to see the blue skies today.
I'm so looking forward to reading everyone's comments on TA on this blog. - Thanks again Ruthy.

    1. Envy you your walk on Minch Common jinner.
I had to abandon my Wednesday afternoon Minch walks some months ago now, though I still go up to the tea at the church sometimes. So looking forward to resuming the walks.
I went and sat on my neighbours terrace in the lovely sunshine around lunchtime, looking over to Tabernacle and up to the fort.
What a lovely spring day it has been.

  59. How do you put a pic on and does it come from your own collection?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'd like to know that as well. I have very few pics in my collection. I saved one of a hedgehog but I don't know where it has gone on my computer. I chose one that I hoped wasn't copyright. When I returned to the selection, the one I'd picked wasn't there. I don't really know how to do this sort of stuff. When I set up my google+ account 2 years ago I added a picture from the small collection already on my computer.
When I was setting up to go on here I chose Blogger profile rather than my google+ profile. I'm worried now that my google+ profile has changed to a hedgehog.

  60. Suz - I want to agree with the addition of Olwen (spell?) is just another way for BBC to address more social issues. We have had so many in the last few months. I would like to settle for a little while the development of the current characters revolving around farm issues. Since spring is here, there must be so many farming things that needs to be done (well - this is coming from a city girl :))

  61. Lady R.
I played around with trying to access the website, and came across instructions as to ' how to ' and was brave enough to try.
Also, it allowed me to put up a picture, and yes it was from my own photographs.
I also remembered to ' save'.
But I still consider my success to be a flook !

When I have tried previously, I have not had the website come up, and I have noticed this happening on other websites on other occasions, so I think this is something that occurs often.

  62. Will is unravelling, and as usual projecting onto others his own guilt and negative perspective. If possible becoming an even nastier person than in the past.
    Ed is being pragmatic.
    I do hope it works.
    Emma's acting improves daily IMO.
    So good.
As usual Clarrie is trying to rescue one at the expense of the rest of the tribe.

  63. Hello again,
I am a long time listener and have been reading your blog comments for ages and thought I would try to join you here. You all sound a jolly lot and have interesting ideas.
Back to the Archers- I think Will will give himself away soon. He doesn't seem to have much idea about looking after his children. I feel sorry for Brian being forced to retire. They might ask him back when they find they can't manage without him. Emma is very believable, picking up the wet towels.

  65. Thought Ed’s attempt to placate Will tonight with the “I was drunk and can’t remember anything” was pathetic. I’m sure Will won’t be taken in by it.
Love how Jenny is standing up for once against Brian too. Go on girl!!!

Nice to see everyone is getting the hang of profile pics. Lovely.

  66. Lovely to see you here Somerset Lass. Pull up a chair and have a cuppa! I was quite surprised at how waspish Brian was with Jenny tonight. She has stood by him for years, even took in his illegitimate son and bought him up almost as her own - now he calls her disloyal! Pot, kettle, black, I think. I would leave him to stew in his own juice if I were Jennifer!

  67. Hi, I enjoyed the mix of comments on the BBC blog regarding the show and how the plots resonated with our personal experiences, no problem with the odd wander off topic, it’s what friends do when chatting.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Quite agree KP - I find this blog is just like a group of friends chatting over a coffee but with a common background Interest. By the way, are we all ladies/women/girls (whatever term you prefer) here or do we have any of the chaps with us. I would hate to think that the likes of FOSO or John the A might be put off joining us due to chats about knitting etc. It was always interesting to hear their take on various TA stories.

      Delete
  68. Regarding tonight who do people think is going to crack first, Will or Brian?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Definitely Will - Brian has more self control, I think.
I also enjoy the mix on the BBC blog, and I'm sure that once everyone has sorted out registering and their profile, we will be back to TA more. It will be nice though not to be castigated at going off topic!

    2. Will needs some Zen meditation, as well as Emma and Brian. Why is Emma so high and almighty so much. How does Ed put up? Isn’t he working full time now?

      Delete
    3. I agree it will be Will. Brian's had lots of practice he's kept the barrels secret for 38 years and never split!

      Delete
    4. Will, is certain to crack. He is already paranoid, and perhaps heading for a psychotic breakdown.

  69. I think it might do Brian some good if
Jennifer took herself off for a short break. Not GG, too close.
Perhaps a three day break at The Randolph in Oxford or somewhere similar.
    A nice civilised city break.
    She won't of course.

    2. MrsP . Was looking for a number to insert. Habit.
I wouldn't recommend the Randrolph. Having lived in Oxford for a few years and used the Randolph I can categorically not recommend their coffee or beer. The old Oxford Prison is now an interesting hotel I would suggest Jenifer books into one of the ex cells and has a week of culture. Brian would certainly miss her, even though he is capable of making a cup of tea.
Ps. The ice cream on Rodborough common is very nice, especially in the summer.

    3. Stasia, jinner agrees with you about Winstones. When I first came up here I didn't take to the local delicacy, but it's growing on me.
The next time you are over this way, feel free to drop in for a cuppa.

I stayed at the Randolph for a few days many years ago. Can't remember the coffe and don't drink beer.
But I'm very happy with The Bear of Rodborough for my coffee after a decent walk.

    3. No I think the lovely pusscat is Stasia's. I can't do it at the moment as I want an icon not a pic. I'm working on it🤔I want an icon like your knitting needles but can't quite work out how to. Dud you copy and paste off the internet?

    4. I went to Google images, put ‘ knitting clip art ‘ in the search box then downloaded one or two to my ‘pictures’ file. Then all I had to do was choose the best one to put on the profile page on here. I deleted the first couple as they were either too large to see properly or too blurred. But it is easy to delete any you don’t like. Google images is a great source of icons and clip art images of just about anything under the sun!

  73. Re numbering of posts.
(77). I don't think it would matter if there were say three 63s ,it would give us an idea if one wanted. to refer back to somebody's earlier post
Although Ruthy has allowed us to slip one in if we wanted to respond to someone I would think most of us will just scroll down and read later posts and not go back and check if someone has replied to an earlier post if you see what I mean.
So ,I haven't a clue what number this post might be but I am going to say it is (77) and if you want to follow my suggestion you can.
If for example Mrs P did a post (68) and Archerphile wanted to respond by slipping her point in ,she would put (68) too.
However I still think it would be better just to do as we have done on the BBC blog.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Lanjan 77. I have just replied to MrsP above and my concern is that, if we reply to a comment, without having to scroll through lots of posts, how will anyone realise they have had a reply.?
I won't miss the piercing arrows but the numbers did help to reconnect to another posters comments.
Now I'm getting lost in my own nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  75. 78.
Yes, I am finding a slight problem in replying to posts. For example I responded to KP’s post earlier this morning but unless she/he or anyone scrolls back through lots of subsequent posts it won’t be seen. So unless we post a reply as a new comment each time these short threads won’t work.
Can I suggest that each time we make a new COMMENT we prominently give it a number (a short scroll back will show what the last number was, I have used 78 as it follows on from LanJans 77) Then if we want to REPLY we put that number in brackets or something similar, as LanJan suggested. Hope I’m not sounding dictatorial by the way, it’s just a suggestion. Others may have a better idea!

    1. Archerphile. Perhaps when Ruthy opens a new blog. The first person to comment should indicate No1. And the next reply, No.2 and so on.

On Saturday evening I will open a new post, in time for comments Sunday morning. I have figured out how to disable comments. If you look at the first post (January) - you can no longer comment. I will overlap 2 postings for at least a day - so we can concentrate on commenting on one post at a time.

I agree with sequential numbering and if we start doing it, everyone will follow. But not a deal breaker if someone skips. Let's kept everything light and easy here. We are all respectful, generous and kind, so we will not have many rules, just fun!
