Dogwood Tree

Comments

  1. Good morning! Dogwood tree photo I took last weekend. One of my favorite trees - this tree with pink blooms, and white blooms are nice too.

  2. Morning Ruthy. Lovely photo. Hear the weather has been pretty hot with you in New Jersey. My son lives in Morristown there. Anywhere near you?

I totally agree with your comments on the previous TA blog re Shula and Alistair. I thought last night was quite good though. I don't mind a bit of stretching the truth for fiction it has to happen as long as it's credible. See Room With A View. The parties meet again in London after Italy. Seems incredible but they all share an interest in Italian art hence in London they are all at an Italian art exhibition.

  4. HG and Archerphile: like you I feel exasperated but will continue all the same, because it's there, I guess old habits die hard and there's hope that it may improve when Jeremy Howe takes over in the autumn, I intend to raise the issue of the blog with him.

  5. Lovely photo Ruthy, we have several double pink flowering cherries in our garden which are similar.
Thinking further about last nights episode and my exasperation with the whole programme. I think that is is probably due to the SWs trying too hard!
They are trying to lighten the atmosphere (something I often plead for) with ‘amusing’ scenes such as Brian up an Elderflower tree or trying to mend a tap but they are just turning it into farce. Brian is often naturally quite amusing and he doesn’t need ridiculous scenes to bring out that quality. As for Justin - Justin just doesn’t do ‘funny’ convincingly in my opinion!
Then the drugs/intimidation story, topped by Lily having an affair with, not just a married man but her college vice-principle (no pun intended!)
This is just piling issue on top of issue when we already have several other major stories to contend with.
As I say, I think the scripties are just trying too hard at the moment - a case of good effort but no cigar. As Basia says, perhaps Jetemy Howe will be able to calm things down a little in the Autumn.

  6. We have a row of lovely pink blossomed trees along our road. They're in leaf now but the white hawthorn(?) and yellow forsythia at the back still look lovely. Late we'll have mock orange and lilac in the garden.

Personally I think Brian did everyone a favour by ruining the elderflower mixture. I tried it once, not sure why. I won't bother again!

Meanwhile, as Lynda continues her quest for the perfect breed, janicebythesea reminded us (on a BBC blog) that thee beloved Scruff was a Heinz 57. What's the betting that she finally decides to visit the rescue centre and falls hopelessly in love with a Scruff Mark 2?

  7. Proud to be Yorkshire - Morristown is about an hours drive from where I live, west and south. There and where I live are the bedroom communities for NY as we have direct train service. NJ is a bit dull in my opinion. What is your sons opinion?

    1. I should add most notable of Morristown is that General George Washington had his headquarter there during the Revolutionary war.

  8. Why would anybody be wearing a leather jacket in this weather anyway?
Surely by May such items should have been put away until the Autumn at least.

  9. My varieagated wegillia, with its pink flowers is now in full bloom, as is my standard azalea, pink scented flowers. The yellow standard azalea is only a few days away from bursting into flower. I am disappointed that there has been no gardening talk in TA recently, I wonder what Bert is up to with both Glebe Cottage + The Bungalow? How are Kirsty + Jill doing with the Brookfield Bees?.

  10. Ruthy...my son really likes the Morristown area. We have visited twice. It’s lovely. The countryside was very much like our area in Yorkshire but there were no fields of cows anywhere. It was really strange. Bet David and Ruth wouldn’t like it there. 😁
Some really lovely houses there too.

  11. Archerphile - your post on the turkey blog about how you felt about Shula was so eloquent., one of the most memorable I have read on the blogs. How did you feel about her involvement in the hunt sabateur episode ant its aftermath? I nderstant what you mean about your feeling of betrayal by the scriptwriters, although I guess it could be argued that the same can happen in real life - we feel cheated when someone we thought we knew inside out behaves in a completely unpredictable (and usually negative)!way. I think Shula will come through this conflicted period to reach a resolution.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Thank you for your comments Maryellen.
The hunt saboteur incident with Shula shocked me. I had never liked Shula’s association with the Hunt, having similar feelings to Jill about the whole hunting business. At the time of the incident I think I was so preoccupied with my hatred of Rob and all his doings that I don’t think I took in the full implications of what Shula had done in not reporting him. Later, when she had the chance to speak up about it, I was shocked again that she did not. It seemed very untypical of the Shula I had known, that she would lie and decide to keep quiet about the incident. In her earlier life she had usually been very upright and (mostly) honest and this was a new Shula I was beginning to see. There has definitely been a change of character, but as you say, these things sometimes happen with ‘friends’. She now has to find a new way to spend her life and I am intrigued to see what path she will take in future.

  13. It was sad hearing Jim saying good-bye to his piano and a shame he had to find out about Alistair in this way. For once Freddie was talking a lot sense, I don't like Lily but I'm sure she is beautiful and clever, and rich must come into it as well for Russ as impoverished artist to be.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I cannot believe such sensible and intelligent girl as Lily believes the guff she was spouting to Freddie about her married, deputy-principle man friend. Surely she would not fall for the ‘I’ll leave my wife for you ploy’ and genuinely think he will follow her to whichever University she gets into. I half expect this is all some sort of joke she is playing on Freddie - at least, I do hope so!

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree with you Archerphile that Lily would not fall for the married prof's lines. Plus doesn't she feel for the poor, cheated-on, wife.

    ReplyDelete
  16. We all agree what Lily is doing is very stupid. But how often has it happened and to the best and brightest? So what is lacking in Lily that she is having an affair with a married man?

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's easier to see another's faultlines than one's own, so I believe that Lily can fall for Russ/Ross's tired old lines whilst condemning Freddie for what he's doing; he is the same, self deceiving on the one hand, 'it helps me with revision' yet seeing Lily's gullibility on the other. Also, it's as well to remember, they're only 16-17, hardly the age of wisdom. She gives off the aura of confidence, but her head is turned by what she thinks is lerv, so blinded to the likely outcome, & the existence of a wife.
A non event Sunday offering, I thought, Jim's musical failures of little interest & the twins' scrapes boring & predictable.

    1. They are 18 carolyn - there was a great fuss about their parties, if I remember - so officially adult. Lily is intelligent, has been brought up properly and knows what she is doing is wrong - that's why she is aggressively defensive. If she really believes the drivel she spouted it just proves that even enlightened 21st century girls are not immune to infauation.

    2. Perhaps a 't' in the last word would look better!

  18. Archerphile - (May 20, 10:45 pm). I think that Lily might be an intelligent girl, but I don't think that she's half as sensible as she thinks she is. She is very keen to hand out advice to anyone and everyone about how they should lead their lives, but that doesn't mean that she is able to apply any of it to herself. As Carolyn says (May 21, 7:31 am), she and Freddie are still very young, and are both blinded to the consequences of their actions, even though they can see how foolish are those of their twin.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The disappointing thing about the story line of Lilly's is, that it is not so long ago we were here before, was it with Pip? though the tutor then wasn't married. So many dramas that we have to keep repeating them.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Jude wasn't Pip's tutor, but he was quite a bit older and David, the first time he saw Jude, assumed he was a tutor, and was then shocked when Pip kissed him. But I was reminded of that story too – the 'attractive' (?) older man and the naive young student.

  20. I believe that Lower Loxley and Nigel's finances are still not available. Freddie will eventually inherit LL and Lily will, eventually, have a monetry inheritence. I think that it is all in a "trust" of some sort, and the twins will only receive their true inheritance, from Nigel - their Father, - when The Trustees decide that the Twins are finally capable to accept, and are able to manage, and also control, their legacy. At least Elizabeth does not need to move out, unless she wants to.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I would think the LL as a business is entirely Elizabeth's until she dies, or hands over to one of the twins or a manager. Freddie may eventually inherit the property, but no one can force him to continue to run it as a hotel. He could sell, & share the profits with his sister or any number of scenarios.

  22. I remember vaguely that one of the features of Jennifer's kitchen was a boiling water tap, that's how she produced the camomile and ginseng so quickly, the rest was of no interest.

  23. How very clever is Kate. She turns on the tears, just at the right time. This will mean Brian and Jenny, will then cover her massive debts, for her non-viable holistic set up, If Brian does a deal for his land with B/L I just think that it all sounds to be good, to be true.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well, what a sleeze-ball.
Russ/Ross seriously needs to take a look at his college Code of Conduct.
It will say something like this:
'You must not enter into any form of sexual relationship with a student whether they are
    under 18 or an adult.
It is an offence under the Sexual Offences Act 2003 for a person over 18 to have a sexual relationship with a child under 18 where that person is in a position of trust in respect of that child, even if the relationship is consensual. Any improper relationship is a breach of trust. '
It does not matter that Lily is now over 18. He is in a position of trust over her and therefore the onus is on him to maintain professional boundaries. I wonder what became of the previous year's love of his life? (I doubt Lily is the first student to fall for his 'charms'.)

Freddie, you are already in up to your neck with Elliot. One false move and he'll stitch you up for good. So do the right thing. Yes, there will be consequences to your dealing, but those will come anyway. Better confess willingly to the Principal and give the college the evidence they need to get the bigger fish - Elliot and his cronies. And while you're at it - TELL HIM ABOUT RAPACIOUS ROSS. Lily will hate you for it, but one day she'll thank you. As will all the 'Lily's who come after her.

  25. I am just now understanding why Olwen has been so awful to Pat. She (Olwen) seems to have another place to be this week. I am sure that the Olwen has been spotted at the Chelsea Flowet Show. I am wondering where she has parked her car.

  26. Old woman, you encapsulate exactly my thoughts , I hope Lily realises in time that Freddy is right on this issue. Of course Elizabeth had a fling with an older man, Cameron Fraser, which ended badly, like Mother like daughter? I do hope not.

I still can’t decide whether Justin is on Brian’s side or following his own agenda, but I do enjoy listening to the two of them so I’m happy to wait to see how it plays out.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 7.48 21/5 OW, but Russ/Ross is in a tricky position, however coolly he may be acting towards the boy - if he authorizes a proper investigation of Ellis, Freddie & the other youths, as he should do forthwith without negotiating terms with any of the suspects, then Freddie could lose him his job potentially. If, from fear of exposure, he doesn't, & it comes out that he concealed salient facts, then he's in even deeper trouble.(assuming an unchecked drug gang in a 6th form college is more serious than a senior staff member having an affair with a student. I would hope it be deemed more serious, as it involves more than one student)

  29. I stumbled onto a video in YouTube (actually looking for a line dance!) about 5 oldie British comedians who went to Las Vegas to try to bring the British sense of humour to the US. When things weren't going well in the American director's eyes, they were subjected to goat yoga to relax! I think it was called Last Laugh in Las Vegas, but I only caught part of one episode and didn't find it very funny.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. They weren’t all comedians as Anita Harris, Jess Conrad, Kenny Lynch and Bobby Crush were included. The series was quite enjoyable and after a disastrous dress rehearsal they all gave a wonderful performance on the night which left me thinking bring back variety shows. At least no doom and gloom! Do you remember Sunday Night at the London Palladium?

      Delete
    2. Yes, Sunday night at the Palladium - the good old days! I probably caught the disastrous dress rehearsal of Last Laugh in Vegas, but if the final performance is on YouTube I'll give it another go! Thanks for telling me. Still can't take to the idea of goats jumping all over me and don't think I would find goat yoga very relaxing!

      Delete
  30. There is a yoga place not far from me that has introduced Pygmy goats into its classes. They are supposed to help with relaxation! I wouldn’t fancy their sharp little hooves digging in my back when I was doing ‘downwards dog’ - or
    whatever it is called!

    ReplyDelete
  31. As for this story about Lily and the teacher (what a conniving slime ball!), is it really necessary? Haven’t we got enough problems to worry about in Ambridge at the moment? Freddie and the drugs was bad enough but ‘sensible’ Lily falling for her college vice-principle is a dilemma too far for me!

    ReplyDelete
  32. Agree with OW and Carolyn. Ross/Russ is an obnoxious character and he needs to be reported by Freddie after Freddie confesses to his involvement with the drug thing first and faces any consequences.
Goat yoga sounds quite funny but I can't imagine how the goats add to any relaxation.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Do goats actually *need* yoga? The few I've met seemed perfectly chilled without it. Besides, what if they get themselves tied up in knots and can't untie themselves? It could curdle the milk ...

  34. I thoroughly recommend reading this week’s edition of the Ambridge Observer. There is an hilarious piece about Jennifer’s fury at being unable to send her contribution of Elderflower Cordial to Kensington Palace for THE cake!
Also a review of this week’s showing at the rural cinema - ‘Last of the Summer Cordial’ starring elderly men who never seem to grow up i.e. Brian and Justin

  38. LanJan - RussRoss did not mention his wife or even admit to being married. He simply said ' you can't prove anything '.

    ReplyDelete
  39. We know he is married though I think Mrs P.
My point Miriam ,is that it would not do the reputation of the College any good if parents were to learn what the Vice Principal was up to.
If the Principal finds out about his liason with Lily I am sure he would prefer it if the Vice Principal found another position quite a way from Borsetshire and therefore he is likely to keep the real reason for the move quiet.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think the current focus on previous cover-ups (such as the Catholic Church and the film industry) would suggest the Principal would be very ill-advised to try to quietly dispatch Randy Ross to another college.

Does he *really* believe that his relationship with Lily is 'the real thing'? Somebody in his senior position should know that the college would not tolerate such a staff-student relationship and should have run a mile at the first hint of attraction. Or is it just words, and is Lily one of a string of smitten students?

  40. Enjoyed tonight’s episode. How nice that Ed and Emma put their own anniversary celebration aside to help Will. Curious, why did Pip physically had to make that trip to talk to Adam? She could have just called. I guess we will see Rex pick fruit? Pip is a little manipulative.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I suspect Pip is being revamped as a character, given many listeners were finding her so tedious. She even sounded more normal last night, as well as trying to be helpful to others, going about her day to day working life, with only one light reference to the pregnancy. Also suspect the erstwhile ubiquitous Toby has another acting job currently, hence Rex filling in for that friendly conversation ( so both Anisha & Toby could be mentioned, perfectly plausibly)

    ReplyDelete
  42. I think last nights interaction between Pip and Rex is a prelude to a forthcoming romance. Rex still sounded smitten, and he was very eager to dump seeing Anisha when he thought Pip was asking for help.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Oh, I do hope not, Stasia ! The thought also crossed my mind but I quickly dismissed it because a)So don't want that to happen b) more rationally, would either of us think Rex was succumbing to her dubious charms again, if we didn't know he had in the past ? Could be heard otherwise just as 2 friends chatting C). Anisha is a busy woman, they've been together long enough now to be easy going about slight changes to their personal arrangements.

    1. Carolyn I agree they could sound just like a couple of friends, but then Pip and Rex always did.
And I'm my opinion the best partnerships start out as friendships.

  47. Aha, so things are warming up between Tom & Hannah, eh ? That could be a heartening development. She's coming across rather agreeably so far; also got the sense that she's wised up to Susan as well - not a woman to be managed or manipulated.

    ReplyDelete
  48. It would be good for Tom - and Bridge farm - if Hannah and he saw eye to eye on meaningful topics. Others seemed to - Kirstie mainly and before her, Brenda. If Tom didn't have access to a farm he'd be the worst partner in the world. Hopefully the SWs will teach him how to be a good one.
What planet is Lily's teacher/lover on. However much he 'loves' her he is always going to be cast as the dastardly villan. He has crossed the Rubicon, he is in no mans land, he cannot and should not survive this professionally intact. I'm surprised - but hey ho she's young - that Lily doesn't see this.
Lily has shown a forensic interest in all other areas of teenage behaviour.
Having said that The cry from the heart about Lily always having to be the one who is keeping Lizzie and Freddie on target rang very true. I feel for her and am pleased that Freddie has decided to be so supportive.
Who knows if that's the right thing to do but they are loving siblings and it's worth its weight in gold
Their Mum, Lizzie, who seems to have been so supportive of Pip etc hasn't a clue with either of them.

  50. Rex and Pip and Toby’s baby - is that a threesome or foursome? Or a disaster in the making? I would like to see Rex with Anisha and Tom with Hannah for romantic drama, or would that be dramatic romance?

Agree, Susan was very naughty tonight.

  51. Ruthy, my one line quip to you regarding Lily's infatuation was replayed last night.
It would seem that she has not dealt with her father's death and her vulnerability is being used by an immature adult in a position of power. Freddie and Elizabeth both perceive her to be level headed and sensible, so when Russ ( scumbag) showed some caring of course she fell for his lies. Her facade of bright, intelligent girl who looks after her sibling, is willing to help sort out others problems has cracked, and she is now being abused. The vice principal is not far off from being perceived as an abuser of young women, I wonder when this all comes to light, as it will, how many other have been duped by Rancid Russ.

    1. Stasia - you are making a very good points with Lily - she needs therapy and not Rancid Russ! I thought Fred supporting Lily was very sweet. Though, she needs to be pointed in a different direction. How will Elizabeth feel when she finds out.

  54. I thought it was interesting that The Archers scriptwriters found time this evening to plug the BBC’s ‘biggest weekend’ event to be held over the Bank Holiday - by getting Brian to say he had booked tickets to see Nigel Kennedy some time ago and asking Jenny if she’d like to go.
Yet the only mention of last weekend’s big event, a Royal Wedding no less, only merited a single and very grudging remark from Jim Lloyd.
I understand that most of BBCs output on both TV and several Radio stations is going to feature this big music event. Talk about self-publicity!

(This is most unusual for me.
It is the middle of the night and I can't sleep so I have got up to make myself a cup of tea which is supposed to be the thing to do in that situation.

  55. So, 'all well that ends well' for Brian and Jenifer. A simple bit of bribery, tickets to a Nigel Kennedy concert and a "research trip" to the US for Kate. Really , all Brian needs to do is buy a herd of pigmy goats, much cheaper that sending Kate to America on an expensive mindfulness holiday. Off goes Kate to California, and in my fantasy. returns as an alien believing Scientologist. The yurts will be the new temples.
I did enjoy Jazzer hounding Brian with his need to gossip, and Brian's quip to Adam about smelling of Iron Bru after shave.

It's so much easier to have present ideas for women than men, can't see what Jill was making such a fuss about. Ruth doesn't hanker after possessions, but they live together, for goodness sake, she must be able to see what her d-i-law might need.
One minute, S is pestering A to get a solicitor , but now he is, oh dear, she doesn't sound pleased. She is pathologically ambivalent. (Maybe the fling with Lavinia has made him more 'intetesting'....give us patience)

  64. Carolyn - I like your term "pathologically ambivalent" for Shula. I did say too soon that we got a break from S & A. Though good for Alistair that he is planning to move on and I think it took a lot of nerve for him to speak honestly with Lavinia (sorry - can't spell) that it was a fleeting fling.

  66. Tonight’s episode was much better than what depressing drivel we’ve had lately. Glad for the entertaining respite of Jim and joe. See the welsh wazerk is back. Seems like he’s the Marjorie Proops of ambridge to all and sundry.
I was dreading the run up to my 50th but after the day itself I felt fine. Funny how a free drink in both my regular watering holes eases the advancing passage of time!!! See I’m easily pleased. 😁

Eagerly awaiting the next photo Ruthy. I’ll never sleep tonight wondering what it could be.
Ps....just get Ruth some new wellies. Sure they’ll come in useful.

  67. I agree with Phoenix that Shula sounded as if she was having second thoughts. Way too late for that.
