  3. Re cats- If anyone is interested in making their garden secure so that their own cats can come and go freely and live without the stress of other cats getting in - I have described how we've achieved this in the bottom post of last week's blog

    ReplyDelete
  4. Sounds a very clever idea Norah, but our garden is nearly half an acre so I suspect it would be too expensive, sadly. We lost three cats on the road here too, which is why we haven’t had one for several years now. I would dearly love a Maine Coon and have been offered a kitten but don’t think it would be kind to expose him to our dangerous situation.

  5. I had a Main Coon Archerphile. Bobby Brewster. Tabby.
Wonderful cat. Cancer got him though at a young age.

  6. Ruthy. The chairs above. Are they the same as the previous, they certainly look much better in brightly painted colours?

This morning my cats had to have bottled water for breakfast. Again, we woke up to no supply of water, so have had to use rain water from the water tank to flush the toilets.
As this has happened before I now keep a supply of bottled water in the garage.
Very frustrating not being able to have a shower, and I have go out, as I agreed to take an elderly friend shopping. I suppose we well off people in the " developed" world expect everything to be on ' tap' twent fours a day, then when things break down we can't cope. Apologies for the rant.

    1. I understand your frustration Stasia, but we are wasteful of water in this country. For many years I have lived with the vagaries of a private supply and have learnt to be very abstemious, although I always had a supply in the house. I have a friend who still has to fetch all his water from the stream, not sure I would contemplate that , but no worries about frozen pipes etc.

    1. My health ones I do, well just a copy . In this part of the country they have what is called a yellow card scheme, which is signed by your GP and all medical personnel abide by it, basically to say no recusitation. So like a girl guide LanJan I am well prepared. I have a copy of the latter by both front and back door, no way I want to be a vegetable.

  9. WATER...... one of my passions, into which I put tremendous energy.

My father , having experienced living in regions of the world with shortage of water problems, taught me that water was a precious commodity that must not be wasted.

This is what I do .....
Brought up to understand that water stored in lead pipes should be ' run off ' before using, and this was confirmed by a water board inspector in recent years, as although lead pipes no longer in use many chemicals still settling in stored water overnight, .......every drop of 'run off ' water is run into empty milk bottles. plastic, and put aside.
When washing up in a bowl in the sink, all stored water is used for rinsing then cleaning bowl and sink.

I do not shower often, but prefer to bath, so at night I take any number of bottles up to bathroom, run hot water into the bath to start, thus warming the bath itself, then cool a little with the cold water from the milk bottles.
I have some guilt at having baths rather than showers, but my guilt is ameliorated
by my stringent use of water, never wasting a drop.

I am obsessive, and am castigated by my family., mostly about the number of milk bottles required to enable my system to work efficiently. Although the grandchildren are fascinated and are learning, because I am insisting that they know, that in their lifetime there will be global water wars.

I physically cringe when in others houses, particularly my eldest and husband, where water is indiscriminately poured down the sink or just left running.
The argument being, ' it all comes out of the sky at some point'. And ' it doesn't matter ' .....

Yes it does, but for how long, and once it is here it has to be processed at considerable cost.

I am contemplating requesting a water metre.

    1. You should have a metre Mrs P will save you money.
I am mean with hot water too, only have it on when I have visitors, it is a ridiculous system here, though I doubt I would use it if it was better as you have to run so much off before it gets hot In the winter I boil my kettles on the wood burning stoves. I do have an electric shower though.
I think people wash their clothes too often too, I am not talking about underwear, but because so much is man made it goes in the wash, not good for the clothes or the environment, most aren't dirty, just need a hang in the fresh air.

    2. I have a metre, and when my mother was alive had one installed for her as the bills were enormous. She lived on her own and was paying the same amount as a family household.

  10. MrsP. I have my milk delivered in bottles. They are returned to the milk person and hence recycled. Anyone who lives near the river Severn will experience water stoppages, the most recent one was only discovered when a field began to flood, and it took a long time to fix. In fact the water companies waste more water than households, and we end up paying for their failures.
I do store rain water, but am not so sure I would want to drink any, even boiled.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well to be safe if you wanted to drink it you should boil it for 10 mins, just to boil is not enough.

  11. Ruthy. I have friends who live in a place called Hurley, not far from Kingston which is near the Hudson River. Kingston has a great farmers market and whilst there was able to buy very good English Cheddar. I was very impressed with the farmers markets it would be nice to see more in this country. Do you know the area?

    ReplyDelete
  12. I have a water meter and it is so cost effective. I only pay £15 a month, I do live on my own but I never "stint" on water and that includes watering the garden. I would so love to be able to have a water butt so that I could collect rain water. However, I live in a "semi-" amd all the down pipes from the roofs and gutters are on my neighbours property.

    1. I have recently received a letter, informing me that
my water board "Dee Valley" is now under the control of the Severn Trent one. I am expecting a massive rise in my water charges, which I expect will then be used to subsidise their other areas. I am perhaps being a bit cynical but, I am just being realistic.

      Delete
  13. Showing my ignorance I thought everyone had a water meter although given the choice a large family would prefer not to have one.
I had a nice birthday present last year as when We received the water bill on that date ,all we had to pay was the Standing Charge .
Amount of water used was nil.
Being the honest soul I am I telephoned the Water Board and was told that there was a fault in the water meter which meant the amount of water used couldn't be measured and they would be mending it in about two weeks time.
I assumed they would charge us something similar to what we usually pay for that 6months period but apparently not.
I told them there was no rush.

My S in L and I watched together, and shared childhood memories of the Royal Tournament.
Both the Trooping and the R T were important highlights of the year in my family. Both father and Grandfather were mounted soldiers in their time. In earlier years we always went round to the stables In Earls Court at the end of the RT to see the horses.
I miss that annual spectacle now.
But I was lucky enough to have a seat in the stands at Horse Guards when pregnant with my first child.

    3. We were living in Cardiff at the time the Pope came to visit years ago. My parents came up to stay. Except for my Dad we all got up at 4 a m to go to Llandaff Fields park. My dad who was a farmer declared he was on holiday and he wasn't getting up until 8, which he did, and he just wandered right down to the very front and had a grandstand view, while we were halfway back in the crowd! So Esscee you could go at a reasonable time and might still be lucky.

  15. Changing the subject
In our local shopping area this week there have been two tcases of handbag snatching.
One was by a youth on a bicycle riding on the pavement in our High Street who grabbed a woman's bag as she came out of Sainsbury's and the other was taken from a car at traffic lights when a youth took a handbag from the passenger seat..
I never bothere to lock my car doors when I drive alone-I will now .
Also I will not put my bag on the passenger seat but under my legs .
    Belt and braces.
Hovever, I feel that people are asking for trouble if they are prepared to walk along the road talking into mobile phones. The theft of them by moped riders has gone up tremendously.
Perhaps they should just ban mopeds.

    1. I am always very careful of my handbsg + purse when I visit a supermarket. It is so very easy to lose sight of these when I turn to look and choose my purchases.

      Delete
    2. I have a handbag with shoulder strap and wear it over one shoulder and under the other arm in front of me. This makes it difficult to snatch. Thieves are cunning though and you need to be vigilant. So sad the case of the 100 year old lady whose bag was taken and she later died having suffered a broken neck in the attack. However we mustn’t be too afraid to go out as these incidents are rare when you look at the overall picture.

      Delete
    3. I also always use a ‘cross-body’ handbag, mainly so that I have one hand free for my walking stick and one for Carrying a shopping bag. I thought this was the safest way to carry a handbag until a friend was walking along the pavement in Italy last year. Suddenly a couple of louts on a motor scooter drove up behind her, quickly and neatly cut through the strap with a knife, whipped the bag away and were zooming up the street almost before she realised what had happened. It is a common practice there apparently and could well become a problem here too with all this scooter crime that is happening recently. How terrifying.

As Seamus will be 3 at Christmas I plan to take them on the Santa run and the plan is for my 80th to take all for dinner on the train, so many memories for me, travelling with my grandmother and twin sister from the Isle of Wight to Leeds on the Pullman, well from Kings Cross. We always had tea passing through mining country and being fascinated by the colliery wheels Talking about it has just given me an idea, as My niece was saying the children ought to experience afternoon tea, so we could do that on the train for my next birthday, they will be old enough to appreciate it (I hope)will now look into it as they get booked up months in advance. Thanks LanJan

    4. Cow Girl, I introduced my daughter to posh afternoon tea for their sixteenth birthday. One. At the Hyde Park Hotel, can't remember where I took the other one. Then for younger daughters 40th at Fannys Farm Shop in Surrey in a tree house. We were all crowded in somewhat and the youngest was about two I think.
So my grandchildren have been well used to formal tea. I took the eldest to a Hotel in Tetbury.

Did you grow up on the I O W or had you been on holiday from Yorkshire. You will, like me , remember the old trains on the island.

Have just received an email from my daughter back in England with a photo of our second eldest grandson (aged10) all kitted out for his very first proper cricket match. Complete with white trousers, helmet, leg-pads, batting gloves, and brand new bat. (My daughter had to explain what the box was for though.) He was picked for his first game by Longparish Colts against Amport, here in Hampshire. His name is Griff, so we are calling him our little Griff Boycott and Grandpa (and I) are so proud! 29. Lasting Power of Attorney forms.

Today I saw an advert in a magazine to "arrange to get your LPAs and get your affairs in order now " - at half price because you are a reader of the magazine.
    Please take no notice.
They are charging £416 for what will cost you if you do it yourself £168 .
You do not need a Solicitor.
    The forms are straightforward .
They are not doing anything illegal .
If you get into difficulty there are people who will help at the end of a phone line.

    1. I did mine with my solicitor and it was pricey! I do though have peace of mind. It is kept by them, along with my will and the deeds of my house, in the secure vault. If my LPA has to be activated, it will be overseen by my solicitor.

      Delete
    2. I personally do not think that the solicitor is the best person to oversee LPA's, their knowledge of you is minimal and the cost, they don't do it for nothing. I don't know what your solicitor charges, but mine is over £200 an hour.

      Delete
    3. Apparently there are several "Companies" doing this sort of thing in addition to Solicitors..
I found another one which quoted "only £199 but that was per form (and there are two ) and then VAT was added.
I rarely read Women's magazines so perhaps that is why I had never heard of this sort of thing happening.
I don't remember hearing anything about it on any radio programme either or reading about it in any newspaper.I dare say there are people who are unaware that one does not need a Solicitor to complete these forms.
My sister left it too late to become her husband's Power of Attorney.
He developed early dementia before she thought of doing the forms.

The vet changed her eye drops and I have to take her back on 25th. She is still a bit clingy but is gradually settling down. She has to sleep by the bed and usually wakes at about 6 in the morning. Not being a morning person this is a bit tough for me! She then strolls around the bedroom and scratches on Katy’s door so I have been locking the stair gate to keep her at the other end of the house after she has been toileted! This does not go down well but she now only whines periodically and no barking so we are making progress! She is small but likes her own way and given the chance would be in charge! Looking forward to the holiday and I know she will be in good hands when I am away. No doubt reinforcement of rules will be necessary on my return but I do need the break! Thanks for asking, Miriam!

  37. MrsP, and anyone who is interested, the Royal Three Counties Show will have some of the actors present. But they will be spread over the three days. Unfortunately I can't go on the Friday when my favourite character Lilian will present along with Eddie Grundy.
I have decided to go on Saturday when Matt Crawford and Ruth Archer will be there, apparently one can have a photo taken with them and get their autograph.
I shall not be doing that, in fact I'm not particularly keen on meeting either of them.
It's a lot cheaper than going to the RHS garden show. Will now buy tickets.

    1. Matt Crawford is obviously going to re-appear
I cannot wait to learn why, and what his next movements will be. I bet it is to win his "Pusscat" back and also to somehow, get his own back on Justin, Latif and the "scam conspiritors" Will Aunty Chris get her money back?

  38. GaryGilday: what an excellent date to choose for your Wedding - Bastille Day, the very same day my son marred his French fiancée 10 years ago! Of course, as they live inFrance (I am with them now) there are always great celebrations and fireworks displays to help them celebrate! My very best wishes to you both

Your holiday sounds and looks so idyllic.
The nearest I have been to Posaro, is Barga which is a bit further south. I met someone in an Italian language evening night school class, and we became great friends. She and her husband sold their UK home and bought a lovely apartment in Barga. I had a couple of lovely "breaks" there, flying into Pisa and then getting the train. They only lived there for about 3 years, as they then moved to OZ to follow their daughter + family. I also had many visits to Lucca, a truly lovely city, with so much art in it. I am an"Italianophile" in that I love the country, the life-style, the food, and of course the wine! I know the more southern area of Tuscany well, but not the area you are visiting.
I have visited so many Italian areas, and I love The Marche region and Umbria.
I am very pleased for you that Gypsy has settled so well, you have done marvels with her, and I am sure that she will be fine and well cared for while you are away.
Have a Wonderful Holiday + Experience.

    1. Ah, I thought I'd said (feel free to skip, anyone...) Miriam, I was tempted by a Phase 8, which I recall you recommended, not floral but green, a jolly pattern, with a few birds scattered, jacket to match, but cotton, maybe not quite mother-of-bridegrom, so moved with regret....fetched up with a Mint Velvet number, floaty, dark blue, irregular flashes of white, long sleeves, but see through..think it will be OK ! Thanks for asking.

  44. I am referring back to a previous comment and the possible re-appearance of Matt (as he will be at The 3 Counties Show - Stasia @ 8.58am.).
I am wondering that if Matt Crawford does appear back in Ambridge, will he eventually learn about who was responsible for his accident and that it was Nic who was the cause? If this happens I wonder how he will react, both personally and with Will etc. I realise that this is a lot of ifs, but it might just happen.

    1. That's a coincidence Miriam, as I've just mentioned Matt on the other thread in regard to Philip. Just a few minutes ago.

    2. In the publicity for the 3 Counties Show it didn’t mention anything about ‘Matt’ returning, just that Kim Durham would be putting in an appearance. Perhaps he just happens to be in the area that weekend and will be free! I’d love Matt to return and set a few more cats amongst the pigeons but I wouldn’t count on him being at this Show as evidence.

    3. I agree, Archerphile. I expect the actor needed the money! I'd much prefer Rob to return than Matt.

  45. According to the blurb on the website Matt and Ruth will be available through the the day in the Wellington boot and Cookery theatres. I shall try and introduce myself but don't want to sound like a silly teenager. I suspect they won't be concerned about the blog, however I will try with, "were you aware that the blog was removed, and how might we get it back"?

  46. Back to Miriam's suggestion about Matt's return - I reckon that idea has legs ! Tobe honest, Miriam, & please don't be offended, I usually find your future predictions far fetched, but not this one : it would bring a number of apparently loose ends into focus. a)Matt's disappearance. b) the concealment about Nic causing the accident. Neither of those SLs can lie down forever, any more than the Titchener one.
Sorry, the above should really be on the other blog....

  47. F A O - THE ACTIVISTS

On Woman's Hour this morning Dame J Murray was appealing for activists of any sort, past or present, and any age, to contact the programme.
WH is preparing a programme about activism/ women.

Now is your chance ladies !

There was also a plea for any Mary Quant articles for the upcoming V&A Mary Quant exhibition.
I have nothing left I'm afraid, but others might have.

I did once think of contacting Woman's Hour but I never took to Jenni Murray who goes around with her glasses at the end of her nose and a blanket over one shoulder .
I went of her(childish I know) when on "Celebrity Mastermind" she gave her name as Dame Jenni (who spells Jenny like that ? ) Murray.
However ,tomorrow I will email the programme.
      Well done Cowgirl

  51. Ev. I have just recently looked at the website for the Watermill at Posaro. I am very interested in their Italian language courses and I know that the set-up will suit me. I will wait until you return, to hear all about your wonderful time, before I will make a decision. It does sound exciting. I think a holiday, brushing up and learning more Italian, with full board, sounds idyllic.
My last flight from Manchester to Pisa was amazing. It was a small plane with outside propellors, 2 seats on one side of the ailse with just 1 on the other and they were leather. It was like a private jet and it was a low altitude flight, so the views were unbelievable. I will never have a flight like that again!

Back to you now Mrs P.
You say that you will be mobile tomorrow -great news -so today could you perhaps just post a quick comment on the Woman's Hour comment form even if it just says
Please may be have our Archers blog back?
In fact if lots of you who don't have much time do just that ,they may get the message?
After all if we do achieve something then we will all benefit.
After Eddie Mair and the Today programme ignored our requests I don't hold out much hope but as Mrs P pointed out they are doing a programme or programmes on Activism so we may have more chance.

  63. What have the BBC done now?
They have only switched their top "Stars " onto their pay roll instead of letting them go through Companies which meat they have avoided paying the higher rate of tax.
Doesn't your heart bleed for the Celebrities?
Imagine only having a salary £150,000 + to manage on and having to pay tax and National Insurance on it too.

  66. I hate football! I also am not very happy that the World Cup is now so dominent on so many TV channels, disrupting normal programme schedules. I have to be very honest, that when Wimbledon is the major sporting event, I love the TV coverage but is only on the BBC..

  67. Oh come on ,Miriam .
It is great for the moral of the people of this Country when England is playing and doing well in any sport.
Apart from Sport (and Poldark ) I am not desperate to watch anything on TV.
Even (in my opinion) Gardeners World has gone downhill.
    Spain VPortugal .
I am supporting Spain who are losing because they have just sacked their Manager so I am supporting the underdog.

  68. Hi LanJan - I am watching the game now - sitting with my laptop and keep eye on the TV. I do love sports, and with World Cup on only every 4 years, I do find it fun. Though disappointed that US and Italy are not it this year. We in the US, the World Cup only attracts a small audience. I live in an area where there are a lot of immigrants, Europe, Central and South America, so there's more interest here. I work in Newark, in its Iron Bound section, where years ago was a very large Portuguese population. I watched a Spain vs Portuguese in a restaurant once and it was ruckus. And I think it would be today. Fun.

  69. Hi LanJan (again) - I am waiting for Poldark to come to the US. Usually there is 6 to 12 months lag before it is shown here. Is this new series as good as the previous seasons? Also, A Very English Scandal will be on Amazon Prime starting June 29!

  71. LanJan - yes, wow! That last goal was a beauty! This is why I love sports. My son who lives in Indianapolis watches premier league religiously and we were exchanging text during the game. I actually don’ know how he became such an devout fan. He also love hockey nd baseball!

  74. Miriam, I am with you regarding football and the wall to wall World Cup coverage. I hate football as much as I love cricket and the next 4 weeks will be misery for me (and Mr A). All normal programmes relegated , even the 6 O’Clock news yesterday, cars driving around with flags sticking out of the windows, football craziness in my supermarket. Even here in France the grandsons are glued to football on the TV at the moment. We are going home next Wednesday and I think I shall then put myself into purdah for the remaining 3 weeks!

    ReplyDelete
  75. Live and let live,Archerphile.
In a few weeks time there will be tennis on the BBC from morn until night.
For that fortnight those who don't like tennis will either switch off or watch ITV or Sky.
    This happens every year.
The World Cup happens every four years for a month the equivalent of one week per year.
It makes a lot of people ,including your grandsons ,very happy.
    I rest my Case.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I agree with the tennis comparison re The World Cup.
Wimbledon is shown on BBC1 + BBC2 very often just on one of these two TV channels.
My anti World Cup rant is that it appears on so many TV channels, ITV and BBC which disrupts so many normal programme schedules. The crickey Test Matches and the major Golf tournaments are now only availble on satellite, so why aren't the more minor football games only shown via satellite/i-player and only show games with the more prominent countries. I refer to Sunday - yes to Germany vs Mexico, but Costa Rica vs Serbia? And there is Brazil vs Switzerland with nearly 3 hours coverage.
Oh well I have given my thoughts, rightly or wrongly.

    ReplyDelete
  77. At least you have well informed thoughts on sport& sport on T V, Miriam ! Sorry, nothing to contribute here; one of the best things about leaving school, no, the BEST thing, was no more tennis/lacrosse/gym, & certainly no watching, for real or on the box. What a hopeless case !

But - why was this daily innocious, fun, and light-hearted 30 min
programme not be shown, or re-scheduled, as the Egypt vs Uruaguay match had priority. Why not utilise the "red button", i-player, or the
vacant channel No. 8 which was once BBC 3.
