  1. Hello Ruthy. Love this photo. We have one that we bought my mum and dad for their 50th wedding anniversary. She loved sitting out on it down her garden enjoying the sunshine. She died 2 years ago now and since my brother has no garden I inherited it. I have spent many an hour laid out on it during this summer when it’s been too hot to do anything. Sounds stupid but I do feel close to her when on it.....damn , I’m welling up. 😒

Anyhow..... still in LA till Thursday when we start the drive to Las Vegas.
Did a bus tour this morning. Tomoz tour of paramount studios and hopefully a visit to the Hollywood forever cemetery. I long for the golden age of Clark gable, Cary grant, Katherine Hepburn, Jimmy Stewart. These so called stars of today do nothing for me.

  2. Ah, at last, I can post. Lovely memories of summer Ruthy.
Have replied to your interest in our Public Footpaths on the Archers blog as I couldn’t do it here.

Forgot to say that we have a brilliant organisation in the UK called the Ordnance Survey.
They publish maps for every inch of Great Britain in several different scales.
The ones intended for walkers show, in great detail, every aspect of the countryside including public footpaths, contours of the land, location of churches, and many other buildings from windmills to post boxes. The maps covering really wild areas such as the highlands of Scotland even show bothies, little huts where you might be able to shelter for the night.

You can almost go for a virtual walk through Britain by using these maps! They are a national treasure and I know several people who have built up the entire collection of maps coving the whole country. If you ever get over here and intend to walk I really recommended getting a couple of OS maps to plan your routes. You might like to check out www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk, click on any one of the maps and you will see the incredible detail they give. (And no, I don’t work for them but did have to use their maps extensively!)

  3. How are a feral cat's morals ( instincts would be a better word for animal) dirrenet from any other cat? Just asking!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Maryellen, I think Ev said alley cat, not feral.
I believe there is a difference between the two.

      Delete
    2. Same question applies, Mrs P! How do an alley and/or feral cat's so-called morals differ from any other cat?

      Delete
    3. Cats, alley or otherwise don’t have morals but human beings should have and sleeping around by both males or females is never justifiable.

      Delete
    4. SoHannah doesn't have the morals of an alley cat because cats don't have morals. Nor is Hannah "sleeping around". She has been having sex with two friends, had been open about it with both and isn't hurting anyone.Contat with Aldridge who had clandestine sex with another woman knowing it would hurt his wife. I see no reason to condemn Hannah and every reason to condemn him.
      .

    5. Let’s just agree to differ, Maryellen. After all Hannah isn’t a real person! Agree Brian is no saint but Jenny is for bringing up his son. I wonder whether Raurhi will make his speaking debut soon!

    6. Ev - Hannah may be a fictional character, but the attitudes towards her being expressed on this blog are real life! Sadly.

I had hoped that some one would continue the walking posts by explaining our mapping system.
    Thank you Archerphile.
I have spent many hours of my life, walking through the UK via ordnance survey maps.
My father had a map book, I think published by a cycling organisation. It had a green cover. I loved that book. Unfortunately for me, my sister got that one when we divided his books between us.

Archerphile, am I correct in thinking that the ordinance survey system is unique to the UK ?

    ReplyDelete
  5. Archerphile and MrsP - thank you for your lovely posts on walks. I will research the ordnance survey and I do want to definitely plan for one of these walking trips!

    ReplyDelete
  6. PtbY - I have driven from LA to Las Vegas a few years ago with my son. We then continued to Grand Canyon, and up through Utah. My favorite spot was Moab, Utah where we saw the famous arch. I can't wait to meet you on Sunday! Have a safe trip.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Ruthy, if and when you next plan to come to the UK and if you plan some walking, then do google ' Walking Holidays '.
There are many companies and organisations who provide such holidays with Band B accommodation and some include transporting your luggage from one stopping place to the next.
We also have at least one magazine dedicated to walking here in the U.K.

  8. When I worked as a Pharmacist in N.Wales. there was a campaign to keep people walking, and also enjoying like-minded peoples company, at the same time.
Each month, a new leaflet was delivered, which was very prominently displayed. The walks outlined in the area, were brilliant, with very interesting. These benefited so many, and a lot of new friendships were formed.

  9. My first job after university was as a mapping assistant for the local council. It was a special project to produce hand drawn maps of the area, a bit like Wainwright, with every stile and hedge marked and notes of local interest/history. Being paid to go walking and then read local history books in the library - I was “chief” editor of the text - heaven.

    2. That would have been my dream job Seasider. I love maps!

    3. So do I. I can spend hours looking at them, reading all the names, looking at the contours, colours etc.

Ruthy, our neighbours had one of those seats when I was a little girl and I would cross our back gardens and sit chatting with them. Happy memories.

Looking forward to a beach walk and fish and chips tomorrow as a break from house stuff.

    4. Me too to Seasider and Archerphile.

  10. Mrs P - late answer to you OS question because I’ve been locked out again.
Yes I think you are right that our brilliant Map system is unique to the UK. With apologies to Ruthy, I remember when Mr A and I were on a motoring holiday in New England a few years ago, we bought maps to find our way around. They were dreadful! We got lost several times because many roads and features simply weren’t on the map, so when I navigated (as I always do) and said ‘take the second on the right’ we were travelling along completely the wrong road because there were lots of routes not shown. We spent a lot of that holiday backtracking and retracing our route trying to find all the places we wanted to see!
We commented at the time -‘if only the USA had an OS’!

    1. Archerphile, last night I googled Montauk looking for the coffee shop where Ruthy and PtbY are to meet.
Montauk seemed to be way out at the end of the peninsula south east of NY, but I could not find the street mentioned by Ruthy.
I then googled the address with the post code and it seemed to be an entirely different area, west in NJ.
So it seemed that Montauk is a suburb but also yet another completely different place somewhere else.
So I can understand your confusion when you were travelling there.
      Sorry Ruthy.

    2. Thinking further....
Perhaps it is unfair to criticise.
When thinking of the size of the UK and our mapping history against the vastness of the United States and its far shorter history.
I suppose that particular areas, towns and areas of habitation are mapped, but vast empty areas left unmarked.

      Delete
    3. MrsP - we are meeting in Montclair, New Jersey. The Local coffee shop is on Watchung Avenue.

      Delete
    4. Where on earth did I get Montauk from ? ? ?
I must have been very confused last night.
Perhaps it's the heavy cold that I am suffering at the moment.

I apologise for insulting anyone or confusing others.

Puss has this evening, for the first time as far as I am aware, been defending his territory.
I went to investigate when I heard the screaming and the other cat, never before seen was cowering on the wall with Puss below screaming obscenities.
The other ' little' cat disappeared over the fence and Puss went after him.

I don't think I need to doubt that he has taken to his new home !

    5. Mrs P, you are not alone in confusion! Having had several disturbed nights with Gypsy, today I drained some rice not ov er the sink but straight onto the worktop?! What am I like?! She is much better today but had a trip to the vet again yesterday. She is now on antibiotics as well as a bunger upper and a probioti. The vet thinks it may be stress related colitis. She hasn’t shown too much stress over the new puppy but she does internalise things. They do seem to be settling down though and he has quickly learnt not to hassle her too much. He buried one of his toys in the garden yesterday. I exhumed it only to find it disembowelled today so raccoon is now in the bin! Mrs P glad your cat is defending his territory so well! I have heard it can be the best way to keep other cats out of your garden!

It was already dark and I was struggling vision-wise, only then to realise that 2 bulbs on my 3-bar ceiling light had blown - no wonder it was gloomy. Will sort out tomorrow.

Lady R, how are you getting on with iOS 12?. I am giving up trying to post with my upgraded iPad because every time I try to post some thing I can’t because no orange B - just a thing saying post as Google profile which does not work. I check that I am logged in but even then it dosent seem to recognise me, even if I have managed to post earlier the same day!
Have decided to keep this little old iPod on iOS 11 and use this, probably just once a day.

  16. Well it is Ladybird paradise here in my neck of the woods today! We had them in abundance last week too. As fast as I try to put them outside the quicker they find their way in again (easy enough as it is sooo warm it's a crime not to leave the doors and windows open).....The received wisdom is to leave them alone and they will disappear when it becomes cooler.......Not sure where they will disappear to, best not to ask I feel! Hibernating somewhere in the woodwork I guess. C'est la vie!

  17. I use a PC with Windows10, or a smart 'phone, and I have no problems on these brilliant sites. I must be just lucky!.
Replaced kitchen "bulbs" today. There is a wonderful electrical "place" near to me. It is in an old "church" and supplies the trade but they also serve the public. You need to know where it is, as it has no signs outside, and reminds me of the 2 Ronnies "four candles" sketch, esp. as it still has an old wooden counter. It is srange opening an old church door, complete with heavy metal latch to go in. I did the "helpless female" approach.🀣🀣 Took the old bulbs, and hey presto new halogen ones were instantly produced (+ a spare). They are so knowledgable + helpful. It's like going back in time, with true personal service, unlike so many retail places these days.
Gosh, I am sounding like my late mother, more + more.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Don't worry about sounding like your mother Miriam, it gets worse when you look in the mirror and see her.

Your electrical outlet sounds very comforting.
My lights, one above the stairs and the other further along the upstairs hall have both been ' gone' for weeks. They are very nice lights with a glass shade a large bulb inside the shade which screws in and out of the fitting, then inside that is a tiny bulb which fits into the fitting by pushing in and out. I cannot reach the fitting above the stairs. The other one which I can reach, I have now found that I cannot remove the tiny bulb at all.
So I will have to wait until I next get the man who helps me to do DIY jobs that I cannot manage myself, to visit.

I have had a heavy cold this week, but have compensated for feeling rotten by re reading ' Fingersmith '. Such a complicated but satisfying plot. I sat in the garden in sweltering heat this afternoon and finished it.

  19. We too are being bombarded with ladybirds. There are dozens of them on the south facing walls of the cottage and clustering around the door and window frames. Sadly, on close inspection they are mostly the Harlequin variety which have invaded Britain from Europe and are devastating our own varieties. So, not very welcome after all. 🐞

Seems like quite a few of us are having problems. Fingers crossed mine are over. Hope everyone else’s computers have settled down.

Finally found the LA/Hollywood I’ve been searching for today. Visited the Hollywood museum.....housed in the old max factor building. Loads about the good old days and the makeup of the stars. Actually saw Dorothy’s red slippers from the wizard of oz. The women were so elegant and the men so dashing.
Upstairs was an exhibition of the 1960’s batman series......including the bat mobile. Used to love this as a kid. The video clips were hilarious.....so dated. Must try and watch some on you tube.
Alarm set for an early rise then it’s Las Vegas here I come.

  23. Hello, Archers fans. I'm afraid that I read some very sad news on social media yesterday. Actor Graham Seed, (whom we all remember, I'm sure, as the lovely Nigel Pargetter) has written a message regarding the passing of his son, Toby Seed, who was a musician. It reads 'My brave beautiful boy, Toby Seed, 11.2.88--4.10.18', and there's a heartbreaking photo of Graham with Toby as a child, also a Youtube clip of Toby playing as an adult. It seems to be possible to leave messages for Graham on his FB page--there are a number on there, including from cast members.

    ReplyDelete
  24. How heartbreaking for Graham and all family and I am so very sorry to read of his loss. I am not a FB person so cannot post a personal message myself but my thoughts are very much with him 🌻

    ReplyDelete
  25. I will keep an eye on local press. Graham Seed lives in Nailsworth I believe.
Is there any way that we, as a group of TA fans, could send a message of sympathy ?

Sarnia, would your S in L know about this ?

  26. Just to say I lost connection with this blog again this afternoon having been OK this morning . But as soon as I read about Graham Seed’s tragic loss I went onto his Facebook page and left my sincere condolences writing as a long term Archers listener who had so enjoyed his appearances on TA.

  45. Three years ago my son who lives next to the River in the Lake District in a converted mill, had his car written off as the underground car park was flooded. He was away at the time and everything in the car was destroyed.
He was very philosophical about it and he is fortunate as he lives at the top of the building.
He has just sent a me video of the raging river .
    Very spectacular but............
He has taken the precaution of moving his car outside.
How awful for those poor people in Wales and the North West of England and possibly other areas who once again have been flooded out.

  46. I have had yet another day of torrential rain and high winds. I am not too far away from N.Wales, (W. Cheshire), but luckily not nearly as bad in comparison. I went "on-line" to the local N.Wales news - not nice!!

Endless leaf clearing for me, as nearby trees shed leaves that gather into huge mounds outside and inside my property.
Like others I have sympathy for those needing to deal with floods.

    5. On the island we have had wind towards the end of the week but today started dull and then, in the afternoon, the sun came out. We took the dogs to Quarr Abbey and the outside tables at the cafe were full of folk enjoying the open air. We had a walk through the woods and both dogs did well. Gypsy plodded and Buddy raced ahead. Both of them had a good sleep when we came home. Katy and I went to Yoga this morning. It is the gentle Yin yoga and has loosened up the joints! A good Saturday! Hope the weather improves soon for those of you with cabin fever!

To all who had a birthday, I do hope you had a great time.
Archerphile, thanks for the message of sympathy to Graham Seed on our behalf. I was only an occasional listener when the BBC decided to send his character into oblivion. GS both person and character was, I know, missed by all Archer fans.

Hope I navigate to Montclair ok.
Have planned a back road route cos the motorways/freeways here frighten me to death.

  54. Cow Girl - thanks for your encouragement.
Your taste of your recent walk took me back to many years ago on Wimbledon Common.
There was a local dog, a JR I seem to remember who regularly hurled himself at tree trunks, landed quite high up, and then clung on and climbed further, barking furiously at the squidgel that would hurl abuse back at him.

    3. MrsP. I agree I have been able to compartmentalise two totally different actions. Writing and sharing Archer related ephemera on the Internet, and the physical proximity of being in the presence of another person. On here you are MrsP, or LanJan, Ruthy, Archerphile and we share snippets of our life, but it is not the same as sitting with that individual and engaging in deeper discussions. In fact we have, on the occasions we have met only discussed TA once.
I'm pleased PtBY and Ruthy had a nice time together and all who meet up in London enjoy themselves.

Somewhat related : been away for a few days, & passed through Waterloo, so checked out Lanjan's idea. There is indeed a balcony overlooking the famous clock, a Pret at ground level, Benuga above ( sandwiches, wraps & the like, if we venture no further on 3/12)

  63. Carolyn and Mrs P and other interested bloggers.
It was Benuga I thought would be a good place.
There were several small tables but one larger one and I wondered if when I go next to London and had a word with them if they would let us have that table from 12noon on 3rdDecember.
How many of us are hoping to come ?
My reason for staying at the station was that if someone was held up ,the person would know where to go to meet up and also most folk have already done a journey and may well not want to go elsewhere.

  64. Without looking back, I think 6 of us are meeting, but that doesn't allow for others who may decide to come/ not actually announce that they are, so perhaps better not to reserve a table, but to keep things fluid ?
I thought also we agreed to meet under the clock at 1pm, rather than 12, to facilitate a late arrival, so shall we compromise & fix it at 12.30, how's that ? So long as everyone knows that after the initial touching base, we will migrate to Benuga.

I keep a dehumidifier going upstairs and down I empty both every day I don't know where the water comes from as there are only a couple of damp spots, I suspect out of the old stone walls as it has had a damp proof course installed.I hadn't used them over the summer having had so little rain.

Went to Skinninggrove, such a good beach for dogs, met 2 lovely dog walkers who were so good with Misty, a few more like that and she will soon build up her confidence

  72. G'day from Adelaide - we made it! downside a chilly damp & blowy 17 degrees .. Great to catch up on all your news, love the sound of the dog collar!
We did stop off at Cook, LJ the sign is definitely still there! Only 4 inhabitants, running the fuelling & watering of all the trains that pass through, lots of freight, also rest houses for the drivers.
The visit of Kalgoorlie by night was a different story - the Big Pit (the whole reason for the visit) was closed due to violent storms, in the area so not a lot to see!
V early arrival here, good snooze in the hotel room before exploring the city, Migration Museum v interesting & challenging.

  73. I'm catching up after a few days without wi-fi on my computer and only a smartphone to connect to the internet. Shamefully, this blog wasn't top of my priority list when typing was restricted to a tiny virtual keyboard and an index finger (which I'm sure is shorter than it used to be). But now I've fixed my technical problem and am insufferably pleased with myself. (I don't *understand* the fix, but it's a fix.)

Regarding the London meet-up, it was me that can't make it till one, LanJan, and even then I'm not sure, because I don't know how long my morning activity will last. But I'll look at trains (I usually travel to London by bus – cheaper, and the stop is nearer my house than the station is), and would certainly like to join you (at Benugo?) even if I miss the meeting under the clock!

Regarding Christine - she, of course, broke her hip and part of her pelvis too so her recovery would be much longer than mine.
The other day I heard about another lady who had had a new hip in a nearby hospital. She was in the hospital for 10 days (I was in for 3) and now, 10 weeks later, is still unable to do very much and is still using sticks. I am just so grateful that my hospital uses the new ‘rapid recovery’ programme and cannot understand why all hospitals don’t use it.
