  1. Nice to see cows again.

I saw lots of Belted Galloways at the weekend.

    Thanks Ruthy

  3. Just heard on 4pm news - Edward Kelsey - Joe Grundy has died.

Whatever kind of rascal Joe was and has been, Edward Kelsey turned him into a great character and will be remembered in a similar way to other lost characters from The Archers.

  4. That's sad, & I think he was a fair bit younger than his alter ego.The Grundys won't be the same without him.

  5. A character in every respect. RIP Joe.

  6. Takes a lot of skill to play a curmudgeonly and miserly old codger. His voice was very distinctive, would recognise it immediately.
Can't see how he can be replaced, hope not, the actor and his character were unique. RIP.

  7. Oh, so sorry to hear that. Really very sad, as you say, Carolyn, it won't be the same without old Joe, and with so many 'yoof' characters springing up in Ambridge. Joe's character was one of the last of the old countrymen, like Joby Woodward and Clarrie's dad (forgotten his name) I can remember, and I shall be very sorry to lose him. Only dear Bert left now.

  8. "Joe" has passed and how sad. I loved his grumpy character and he will be so missed.
In one of his last appearances, he made a comment about leaving Grange Farm, where he was determined to end his days, something like:- I don't mind leaving now.
Perhaps this was known, that it would be his last broadcast.
At least, however his passing will be handled, he actually did pass away at Grange Farm.

    1. To add. I hope that the SWs told leave Joes sad passing, as long as they did with Caroline.

    1. Joe will be so missed, by his extended family, and all the residents of Ambridge.
Who will Bert play cribbage in The Bull with? I can play it, so might just wander along for a game or two, along with a few Scruff + T's. Will stay in the B+B at Ambridge Hall, Lynda, Robert, Monty + gossip.

    2. Well if that wasn't flagging up something for Tom re: Natasha I don't know what was! Subtly not being the SW's strongest stock in trade.........Again!

    3. Yes, that whole speech of Tony's just to let us know that Tom has booked a honeymoon?
That's how I understood it. Did he use one of Natasha's cards?

      Delete
  10. I didn't know what all that was about at all BB.
What I did understand was. That Tony was being exceptionally ham fisted in whatever it was he was trying to say to Natasha.

' David' on Front Row giving a dedication to Edward Kelsey, who apparently made his last broadcast about a month ago, I think he said, and has been in a nursing home for a few weeks.
But has that last appearance been broadcast yet I wonder ?

  11. Had not heard the news of Edward Kelsey’s death until I logged on. Very sad - a great actor and another Walter Gabriel of his day!

Only last week I was listening to various Archer interviews on you- tube and one of them was with Joe, Eddie and Clarrie the actors speaking in their own voices were difficult to discern at first, Eddie sounding the closest they said that in the episode where they were about to leave Ambridge to go to Meadow Rise all 3 were so overcome that they just sat and in the end a bottle of wine arrived to help them through what they felt to be a traumatic experience.
Another one was with “Brian” Charles Collingwood at home in his garden it is called “ For the love of TA”and was recorded 3 yrs ago he said he wants to stay in TA as long as is possible like June Spencer. When some horses clip clopped by the other side of the hedge he quipped “ Oh that must be Shula” 😂 out riding with the horses. Worth a look they can be interesting !
RIP Edward we will miss you 😥 🌹

  12. Sad news. I see from the Archers website that Edward Kelsey recorded episodes or an episode this month, which is yet to be broadcast. Agree with others that one of the last defining characters has gone. No disrespect to Jill, Peggy, and Eddie’s generation. RIP.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Oh dear Tony you appear to be playing into N hands and giving her more ammunition to hit Tony with plus more control of his life as he is not able to make decisions for himself!!
Did Chris sound less yokel tonight and more bland 🙄

  14. I am sorry to hear that Edward Kelsey has died but perhaps I am on my own here when I say that I did not particularly take to the character of Joe Grundy so won’t really miss him.
I imagine if the actor has been in a Nursing Home the story line about Joe’s demise may have been written.
“Phil” lived on after Norman Painting died.

  15. Natasha won’t be able to go on honeymoon because she can’t spare the time away from work.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Awful news about Joe Grundy. I shall miss his grumbling and cadging a beer.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Oh, I am so shocked.
Until logging in here at 10.15 I had no idea about Edward Kelsey’s death. How sad, if not entirely unexpected.
Joe was such an old countryman and an iconic character in the Archers, who cannot be replaced.
I can’t think of anyone else who can now take on the mantle of the traditional country village elder.
He will be a great loss to the programme.

However the death of Joe Grundy, when it happens on air, leaves the way open for a different future for the rest of the Grundy family.

On a lighter note, I see the newish Editor has decided to tidy up some of those annoying loose ends . The bunting is found - hurrah! Now what about the cash box?

    ReplyDelete
  18. I too only learned of Edward Kelsey's death when logging on here. I always enjoyed hearing Joe and his moans and groans. He was such a character and immediately recognizable. RIP

Tony needs to start a Natasha fan club as he's so enamoured of her. Totally taken in by her actually IMHO. Silly of him to let the cat out of the bag about a honeymoon too.

The bunting storyline revived. I'd completely forgotten about that.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I was willing Tony to just shut up last night. What a thing for a father to do, listing his son’s shortcomings to his new daughter-in-law. I think Pat would have been horrified if she had heard what Tony was saying.
And, of course, it hands Natasha lots more ammunition to fire at Tom. She will make good use of Tony’s revelations to get her own way and push her plans for the farm, and their future together.

Bad move Tony, take the stars out of your eyes regarding Natasha and listen to Pat.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Such sad news about Edward Kelsey. Time to raise a glass of cider in Joe's memory! I hope the character gets a good send off on the programme; perhaps Bartleby pulling a farm cart bearing Joe to his final resting place, close to where his Susan is buried at St. Steplens.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Well, we were expecting Joe to die at Grange Farm and now he has. It'll be interesting to see where they go with it.
When Natasha mentioned that she found something, didn't we just guess it'd be the bunting.
I was disgusted that she just bought the last bouquet from a bucket outside the shop, unless they are local, and kept complaining about lunch being late, she took a lot of time out to lunch with Trev.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Every time she muttered "umm" I could hear Natasha's brain doing overtime.
When the two Academic Archers were interviewed on Women's Hour, some weeks back, they stated, that from their analysis, the two worst mothers in TA had to be Peggy and Jill. Tony was definitely very condemning of his son abilities and horror of horrors, his comment about Kirsty was unforgivable.
Jill, without realising, attempted to undermine Elizabeth's coming to terms with her depression by focusing on her own parenting in the past, even though Elizabeth was clear that was not the case.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think there was a lot in last night’s episode about attitudes to mental illness, and it seemed a bit contrived and deliberate at times. However the generational attitude did seem plausible to me, that Jill would be more likely to keep quiet about it as a private problem not to be mentioned outside the family, that she might see it as something to be ashamed of, perhaps because she felt in some way responsible.

Parents aren’t always the best people to offer support as they are too emotionally involved and can see their children’s problems from their own perspective, as Elizabeth has done with Freddie.

      Delete
    2. I agree with Stasia about Tony's comments. I also consider them dishonest. 1. He didn't approve of Tom's decision to do away with his pigs. (Not surprising as Tom didn't bother to explain why or discuss it with anyone except N beforehand.) 2. Tony & Pat have a high regard for Kirsty, with good reason. Why is she suddenly labelled inadequate? She may not be a successful businesswoman but she supported Tom's ventures.
A lesson I drew from the Tony-Natasha conversation was that Archer men contemplating marriage should select a wife with a good business brain.

      Delete
  23. Just caught up, & agree that Tony's confidential little chat with oh-so-busy Natasha was entirely inappropriate ! Plus, he's wrong about her, I suppose that was the point of the scene.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Don't know anything about Fallon's bunting.
Well, good for Elizabeth talking openly with Chris, especially as Jill, who clearly hasn't got the point, was trying hard to shut her up. Chris did seem slightly embarrassed - so what ? The important thing was that E. Is accepting the reality of the illness & trying to get past the ultimately pointless & irrelevant feeling of guilt that so many who suffer have been conditioned into suffering, on top of all else.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Well said as the attitudes to mental illness has changed so much, in regards to awareness + understsnding. I think that it also shows E's progress and it interested in talking to others and becoming a member of the community again.

      Delete
    2. I thought the scene with Elizabeth suddenly informing Chris all about her depression was rather clumsily written. Mental health is an important issue and we certainly need to discuss the implications for individuals and their families. However, depression like many other psychiatric conditions has a wide range of symptoms and can be expressed emotionally and behaviourally in different ways depending on a number of influencing factors. Of course individuals sometimes choose to share their experiences with the most unlikely people, Elizabeth confiding in a young man may not be so unusual, and perhaps safer. Jill was evidently embarrassed by the confession and perhaps the shame if the village gets to know. Of course she will think it all reflects on her parenting in the past. It is very difficult to put oneself in to the shoes of another and have some sense of what it must be like to be that person.

  25. I’m appalled by Peggy’s prying - she had absolutely no right to ask Natasha such a personal question. Age doesn’t entitle one to bad manners.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Of course Peggy had no right to ask Natasha when they were planning to start a family
There is no way she would have done so.
I think that was totally out of character.

Natasha spends her time itching to get away from any of the Archer family she happens to meet.
Does anybody know exactly what job she is supposed to be doing now?
Is she still doing fruit drinks?
      Where is she based?
When Tom tells her about the surprise honeymoon ,will her reaction be.
“Oh yes Tom,your father mentioned it.
You should have checked with me before you booked anything because I can’t possibly go as I am so busy and I have appointments planned for that week.”
      Tom-“Like with Trev,for instance”
Natasha -Well as you mention it ,yes ,I am meeting Trev.
I did tell you that I will not have you interfering with plans I make and with you deciding who I should or should not meet””
Tom-Well ,I will lose the deposit but I will cancel the trip”
Natasha-“Yes Tom,I think that would be best”.

      Delete
    2. Natasha is currently marketing a new flavour. Blackcurrant & Something?
If I was N. that would be my reaction to a surprise honeymoon. It would be different if she was Mrs Tom Archer, housewife. Then her husband could whisk her away at a moment's notice.
Re credit card debt. I've been listening to 'Adrian Mole - Weapons of Mass Destruction'. His debts are similar to Natasha's and the card companies are demanding payment.

    1. I've rarely found Peggy to be a sympathetic character - much too judgemental for my liking.

      Delete
    2. I’ve always felt she has a ruthless streak not far beneath the surface. Peggy was at her most unlikeable in yesrdsy’s episode - pressurising Natasha to stay and help with tea, allowing her pet to maul her guest instead of shutting the animal outside, and then blaming Natasha for its behaviour, and finally the unforgivable prying. I hope Natasha told her where to get off and to stuff the cat!

Do we know what drove Jack Archer to drink?

      Delete
    3. I'm sorry to say that I was cheering Peggy on last night! As I don't like or trust Natasha at all, I enjoyed hearing her being on the receiving end of Peggy's bluntness--a taste of her own medicine! And Hilda the cat from hell had the right idea too! :-)

      Delete
    4. Maryellen, I hope you're not saying that Peggy drove him to drink.

      Delete
    5. I don’t know what drove Jack Archer to drink, Basia - it was before my time and my book only says it was a “fatal weakness” on his part. Maybe Peggy contributed, maybe not. She certainly had the steel to run The Bull on her own.

      Delete
    6. As far as I remember Jack Archer had a similar personality to Will Grundy and to an extent Kenton, in that he was a weak individual who disliked seeing his siblings do better than him.
He tried various ways of earning a living; beginning with a market garden (I think) with an old (National/war time?) Service pal but became jealous of said pal's friendship with Peggy. The market garden idea failed, as did another venture, so in the end Brookfield bought The Bull for him. However the closeness of readily available alcohol and his own inferiority complex, added to his lack of 'stickability,' ended up with him becoming an alcoholic.
Peggy was the 'strong' character having to provide for a family, support a husband, emotionally and financially, and generally just 'carry on regardless.' (I identify with Peggy to some degree, due to my own marriage difficulties.)
Peggy has her 'unkind' moments but on the whole she has got through life by being who and what she is. To me she is a typical, exceedingly old, person who says it like it is and asks the questions aloud that she has in her head, whether they are normally asked nowadays in 'polite' society or not.

      Delete
    7. That’s just as I remember Jacks story, Spicy. In the event, the family did Jack no good by buying The Bull to run - it put him in the way of too much temptation, drinking the profits.
Peggy was definitely the stronger, more sensible partner, aided and abetted by her mother the redoubtable Mrs P.

  27. Hapless Will did his best tonight, & Emma really is a godsend to both him & Mia, who is such a sweet, natural girl. Even Freddie & Shula were halfway bearable, & it's interesting we're hearing Chris at work lately, a change from him watching Alice get drunk. An SL coming ? Cricket captain ? Finding work for F. ? The passion & talent with horses is clearly being signposted.

    1. And an extension from last night when Elizabeth told Chris of her depression, allowed Chris in turn to open up the subject with Freddie this evening.

This also means of course that Jill's fears about the spreading of the news outside of the family, will now also be explored.

Regarding the comments above and Jill's reaction last night.
My mother had the same reaction with me when I had my breakdown, even though she herself had experienced a breakdown at the same age.
I always imagined that she felt that there was an element of 'it' being in the genes. And I believe that current research shows that it is.

Stasia, can you confirm that, or not ?

  28. In answer to flower comments on the previous blog. I'm springing to the defence of grannies' bonnets. They are interesting and complex flowers, the opposite of dull. Mine have begun to bloom as they usually do in April. Daffs are just about finished and those in pots drying up. So I'm in tune with Ambridge flora. Cowslips are wilting even though they are in deep soil in shade. Lilac is a week early.
Has the SSI field at Grange Farm, trashed by pigs 2 years ago recovered? Kirsty said she would monitor progress. Is grannies' apron, mentioned by Joe, flowering there again?

    1. HH - can I join your Aquilegia Appreciation Society, please? Columbines (as my mother called them) are a great favourite of mine, requiring no attention and very rewarding. I have a forward self-set in flower (an interesting and unexpected strawberries-and-cream combination) but I reckon the regulars will take another 2 weeks at least. My only quibble is that the bees don’t seem particularly interested in them. The flowers Jill mentioned conjuredup the Brookfield garden for me.

  30. Lanjan, Nemo. I was cheering Hilda Ogden on, but Peggy not really knowing Natasha ploughed on regardless. I do hope Natasha has had a Tetanus jab, Hilda catches and buries little creatures.

MrsP. Some scientists believe genes are a factor in depression, for a small number of individuals. Certainly Manic depression, or Bipolar disorder hane been identified in some families. Others think it is a learned behaviour and for many individuals external factors such as loss, social changes, familial upheaval, abuse and physical problems etc can affect changes in mood. It is not easy to answer because each individual's history will be different, as will their coping strategies and how they problem solve emotional difficulties. Some people, like Elizabeth require medication and therapeutic support, and in the extreme some may need the safety of institutional care.

  31. I am in agreement with Maryellen, Carolyn and Ex Londoner re Peggy’s character. Ghastly rude old Biddy!

    1. Yes, I agree. I thought there was more behind Peggy’s interrogation and maybe she is probing as she doesn’t like what she sees. She seems to be a bit sceptical about the hasty marriage as she looked into why Natasha had been together with Trev for all those years but never married. Even so maybe Peggy could have been more careful and less direct!

    2. I agree with Suz. Peggy should not be underestimated. However rude she may sometimes be, she is also a shrewd old biddy.

  33. I love Peggy as a character, along with her "side kick", the magnificent Hilda O. As June Spencer will be celenrating her 100th birthday on June 14th. I hope she stays in Ambridge for a while yet, and doesn't decide to retire. Peggy is someone, who is either loved or hated, but she always provides an interesting interlude. Is she still paying for Chris's residential care?
Now Joe has sadly departed,(or soon as far as TA), Peggy is one of the few Great Grand Parents left, alongside Jill, and possibly Bert + Leonard.
I would love the character of Peggy to stay, as long as June can still deliver, Peggy's advice, observations, and no nonsense attitude, in exactly the same, very professional, way.

  34. I strongly suspect that last night’s encounter with Peggy and Hilda is going to rebound severely on Tom.
Natasha will put all the blame on him for being late for the tea party and not being there to ‘stand up’ for her.
I reckon she’s going to give him a right tongue-lashing and I’m not sure how he will react.
Sooner or later he is going to get fe up with Natasha blaming him for everything

  36. Natasha was looking for a way out & Tony letting the cat out of the bag about the honeymoon gave her time to plan it all out. Massive over-reaction on her part, but gave her the way out. has she access to Tom's bank accounts, or will she be able to claim a large payout as a divorce settlement?? Interesting to see how it all works out.

  37. Those two don't know each other at all, it's shockingly evident, really not at all. How can they be quite so ignorant ? Of course, a gradual process of discovery but such fundamental differences would have emerged earlier.
Generally, how could Tom have imagined that any woman would be delighted to honeymoon at a lodge down the road, so to speak ? It beggars belief
Still, Jim's linguistic skills in composing Jazzer's CV was very funny.

  39. Well, I was sort of right in my prediction about Natasha giving Tom a tongue lashing, but for a different Reason!
She really is very difficult to please and I don’t think Tom will ever get things right, in her eyes.
Best they cut the ties now and go their separate ways.

With a bit of luck Tom will decide to keep the pigs after all and Jazzer can come back to look after them - with a promotion to Executive Pig Manager, of course, and a suitable rise in salary and an expense account!

  40. Was that a sob I heard at the end? Was Tom crying? The great soft Nancy!!!!
Time he grew a pair and stopped pussy footy round the great “business woman” Natasha.

    1. 'The great soft Nancy!!!' That comment has me chuckling over my (somewhat late) morning tea! Mind you, Tom crying again (I seem to remember he had a similar reaction when Brenda walked out), confirms my theory that modern young men are far more emotional than they were in my day when 'Big boys didn't cry'!

  41. Agree PtobeY about Jazzer and Jim. Their conversation was amusing - more please.
Less of Tom and Natasha IMHO would be good. Their marriage was obviously too hasty and now she's flounced off. Tom is pretty clueless isn't he. Whatever next.

  42. Natasha is a nightmare! Pat was right and whatever will Tony think of her now? He is as gullible as his son. Peggy will be nodding her head knowingly! Natasha never was going to settle into everyday country life and obviously has no staying power. I always thought Tom was too dull for her. At least she is taking her debts with her!

  43. Will this herald the return of Hannah who will be there to pick up the pieces for Tom?
Natasha was spoiling for a quarrel but to pick on the fact that Tom in his wisdom had decided that a honeymoon trip a few miles away was just what they needed was a bit over the top .Yes ,it was a stupid idea but then Tom is not very bright.
He was doing his best to please his wife.

  44. Was Susan still in the shop earwigging Tom getting his comeuppance? I recall Emma telling Natasha that noise in the flat could be heard in the shop. Wilting lilies, unscented candles,
just like "Auntie Lucy's funeral". A dead marriage comes to mind.
I did enjoy listening to Jim deliver his CV for Jazzer, and thought it could have been written for Natasha. Her juices would have been flowing listing to Jim's description of her creative talents on a, look how wonderful I am, CV.
Go forth Natasha and don't allow yourself to be deadened by small minded Tom Archer and the folk of Ambridge, you were meant for a bigger, blue sky vision, executive business life.
Will storm Hannah reach Ambridge soon?

  45. In the “old” Archers Tom would have married Kirsty - yes ok with problems to follow along the way which they would have worked through and strengthened the marriage - as in the days of Dan & Doris but this is not the way of radio/ tv now it has to be like a “ hit and run” all the time!
Can’t see N going quietly, this is surely meant to lead into an explosive SL at some point ....🤔

    ReplyDelete
  46. Well, what are we going to hear on Sunday night?
An apologetic Natasha crawling back with her tail between her legs?...... I think not.
A distraught Tom seeking comfort from Pat and Tony? ........ possibly
A distraught Tom locking himself into the flat, not speaking to any one? ....... perhaps
Jazzer being asked, ever so nicely, to return to look after his girls? ....... I hope so.

Or, as in previous Archers fashion, not a word will be heard about the split, the story will revolve around the cricket club, Shula returning to church, the bunting mystery - in fact anything but N&T until Monday!

  47. Tony and Tom- to mis-quote AA Milne, "a man of little brain." Both will qquery if or what they did wrong.
I wish we knew what Helen thought of Natasha. Now there's a surprise! Me wondering anything about Helen! Probably had no thoughts about her at all! Could have been a great show down between the two though! Perhaps it will come to pass in the future. The TA website is teasingly devoid of tag lines and cast lists after next weekend. However an interesting development next week which is vague and could involve anyone of three storylines at least. I'll say no more!

I like the producer taking on the missing bunting case, which is referred to every week on the fb page. A bit of a friendly dig at fans? I remember reading an interview with Jeremy Howe and he said he was asked "How would you like to work for five million bosses?"
It seems he may very well be taking cues from the fans! 😃

  48. Well we will see what happens.
I think Natasha will just vanish.
Perhaps a new 5week period will start on Sunday and we will hear characters we haven’t heard for a while returning-Hannah,Ian,Lynda etc.
    Tongues will wag.
Tom will tell Susan et al that Natasha has gone on a Course or that one of her parents is ill something similar
In a few month’s time we will hear more about Natasha’s debt problem and her rather strange relationship with Trev.

I reckon that they are both in debt up to the eyeballs.
When Tony and Tom mentioned the honeymoon she would naturally have thought it meant a trip abroad -not the Isle of Man(if you were lucky) or Blackpool(if not) in my day if you lived in the North West.

      Delete
    4. There are wonderful places in the NW not just Blackpool (which I hate).
Tom made the mistake as to saying it was the Honeymoon. It would have been better to say that it was just a short break, and the "proper" honeymoon would come later. Sadly Tony did not help.

  55. Getting back to Friday. When Susan was trying to fob the wilting Lilies on to Tom, she dropped in a little morsel about Mia not wanting them because, " she had too many other things to care for". Poor child, chief cook, and bottle washer to Will and Poppy. I have noticed these little titbits popping in passing conversations and wonder are they clues to further storylines?

  57. Just a thought - to me it sounded as if Trev had another relationship and N linked up with Tom, thinking that there were a lot of opportunities for improving her position. Maybe a nice, big farmhouse and a stable business to cover her debts, etc. I think she mentioned that Trev had broken up with his girlfriend and now he was available again, she wanted out of a farming life she neither understood nor wanted to understand! I also think she will try to get as much money as she can from the situation, leaving Tom and BF with a lot of financial problems.
And talking of financial problems - is it because of these that the Archers is becoming so limited? More and more characters are appearing less and less frequently, so much so that the storylines are becoming strained and unrealistic. There is too much attention given to the current favourite, which often just vanishes, only to reappear in another block of time later. Where are Lynda, Roy, Brian, Jennifer, Bert , Christine etc? There is a lack of day-to-day continuity , small contacts and conversations which were one of its strengths. It was really an everyday story of country folk. Now it has become far more limited soap opera - not progress imho! Also, while I'm complaining, the voices!!! Too many posh sound - alikes and not enough distinctive accents. They don't have to be ooh ah rural, just pleasant, and different and normal! Sorry to go on, but it is getting a bit much!

    1. Very much agree with you Bufo. I was commenting, only a few days ago, that we dont get the little day to day interactions between the villagers that used to be so enjoyable (well, enjoyable to me, perhaps boring to others!). The chats in the pub about who has grown the best leeks, the gossip from the WI, etc etc. An exception was that recent scene between Jill and Leonard in the churchyard which reminded me very much of the Archers of yore.
I think the problem is that Editors, writers and some listeners have become used to modern soap operas, where every episode has to have a major happening, a crisis or a cliffhanger. It seems that an episode devoted to everyday chitchat, seasonal changes in the countryside or what is happening on the farm, is an episode wasted.

As to the accents, I suspect that, in the case of the younger characters, it is down to how they are taught at drama school. They all turn out sounding the same - but then I think that is happening in real life too. I certainly don’t know any teenagers with a recognisable Hampshire accent! Which it is why I welcome the voices of Philip and Natasha with their very recognisable Welsh accents.
I think one of the best Archers actors is Emerald O’Hanrahan who has perfected Emma’s accent to sound exactly like Susan’s daughter would, despite having a perfectly RP accent in real life.

  58. Bufo9Bufo,I think it is all to do with the fact that 5 weeks episodes are recorded in 8 days so it is my theory that not all the actors will be called in during a particular 8days.
I think it was always the same but for reasons best known to the editor we keep getting new characters introduced so there are more story lines and since there are usually only 7 characters in each episode and approximately 4episodes recorded in one day it would seem logical not to have too many actors recording at any one time
Several plots are put on hold - the surrogacy story , Jennifer and Brian’s search for a permanent larger home.Helen’s relationship with Lee and Kirsty’s with Phillip etc..
When we ger back to one of these stories and give Freddie,Tom ,Natasha and Elizabeth a break I think a new 5weeks of recording will begin.
I may be way off beam.
    This is only my theory.

    1. I think your theory is probably right, Lanjan, but I also think that financial pressures are forcing the SWs to use fewer characters. They could keep us more in touch with side references in the scripts. Another thing that's bugging me is the pigs. are they part of the Bridge Farm set up or are they Tom's separate enterprise? I would have thought that he would have had to at least discuss getting rid of them with the others . Helen seems to have surprisingly little to say at the moment as far as the business is concerned. Is this meant to show her state of mind or just a lack of joined up thinking? There"s not enough continuity. Perhaps they should employ some of the bloggers to make sure they don't make basic errors and unnecessary changes of character. I think you would be brilliant!

    2. Re continuity bufobufo, I said the same as you at least two years ago.
TA dropped its continuity staff member some years ago now, ( I believe), and it's never been satisfactory since IMO. And I also suggested that TA needed a small panel of long term listeners - forty years plus - to keep them on their toes.

And if your interested to learn, on your keyboard there will be an icon showing a smiley face. On mine it is next to the key with - .?123 - if you press that a whole plethora of smiley and ticks and thumbs up appears.

  59. I now think that Trev “chucked” Natasha for ? And when ? finished with him he wanted Natasha back..
She obviously felt more for Trev than she did for Tom so was spoiling for a fight with Tom in order to find a way out of the marriage.
I still think though that there is money involved somewhere.

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think the finances aspect in TA is interesting.
    1) Natasha debts
    2) Ed doing dodgy work, to help him, Emma + children, to help with their Beechwood Home
    3) Kenton still owing monies to David - which he still seems unable to repay.
    4) Peggy + Chris - with their own individual situations.
I am sure that there are other examples.
As far as I am concerned this seems normal in 2019, for many generations, in which many live on credit, and so have constant debts (not including student loans). There comes a time, when things get out of control, re-payments are difficult and so cannot be acheived.
At least Harrison + Fallon seem to be managing their mortgage, and Chris with his farrier + forge business.

    1. Bridgefarm will have to rescue Tom using the money from tha sale of the land. Tom is emotionally immature and lacks the intelligence to know the difference between loving someone and being infatuated. The only time I recall him demonstrating any EI was when Kirsty had the miscarriage and he arranged the funeral.
Natasha has very cleverly managed to make it look as though all the business ideas were his, and of course in his infatuation he failed to spot her manipulation. Manipulation is a word I dislike as it indicates an individual consciously using a strategy to control the feeling and reactions of another/s. I don't think she is that clever, she was herself infatuated by his land owning background. She knows land is valuable.
This is a woman fêted and put on a pedestal by her Nuffield associations and Tom became a willing victim of her success. He was touched by the great and the not very good. But, what he touched was emotional dynamite.
Sorry didn't mean to write so much.

  67. Archerphile, I did actually stop listening for a couple of weeks - but caught up this afternoon while having a well deserved packet of biscuits!

Where to start? It's all just full of people and storylines that either bore me or annoy me. I have absolutely zero interest in the babblings of religious people or the moaning of parents about childcare issues. Have a child, don't have a child, do a job, do 5 jobs - just don't bore me about it please! And that horrific caricature of "The Rubbish Man" Will is now just becoming absurd. His almost wilful misreading of any given situation is an insult to my intelligence frankly.

And I know that I am very much on my own with this one, but I genuinely cannot understand why (almost) everyone thinks Natasha is an evil, manipulative harridan! She just seems simply to be a deeply unhappy woman who has made a pretty big mistake in marrying an emotionally stunted man-child. Run, Natasha! Run for the city! Leave them all to slowly suffocate each other in an orgy of over-sharing and the relentless, slow poisoning of all of their relationships...

I am being perfectly serious when I say that the only part of the past couple of weeks I have enjoyed is the continuing saga of the bunting. ☺☺☺

I suppose the reason why “nearly” everybody thinks that Natasha is an evil manipulative harridan is because she is!
Why do you think she married Tom,Gary?

(I do agree with you about Whimpy Tom though.)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think Natasha married Tom because she thought she would give it a chance. Because she was on the rebound. Because she wanted something new and different to see if that would give her the happiness that she, like all of us, needs and wants. She married him because she thought they could make a good team - both want to succeed in business. She thought they could do that together. She maybe thought that the good friendship they had would be a good building block for a successful marriage.
I think she was wrong in her thoughts, but I don't see anything in her behaviour or words that makes her a bad person. Far from it. I perceive her as honest and forthright. A bit crap at relationships granted, but that's hardly the crime of the century is it!?

As to the bunting - I think it was a drunken Jazzer!

      Delete
    2. Well Gary we partly agree.
You say Natasha was on the rebound and I think she was “chucked” by Trev.
I can’t see how she actually thought that Tom and she would make a good team because he couldn’t organise the proverbial in a brewery .
I think she thought she could “improve “things at Bridge Farm and that Tom would do as she wished.
I doubt she thought that Pat might be a bit of a problem to her.
Tony is/was putty in her hands.
Her manners and behaviour are atrocious.
Tom doesn’t know her well enough to know that she doesn’t like lilies and candles.
He is trying to save money so in his mind any newly married young woman would love to be anywhere secluded with the love of her life.
She makes no bones about it when she is bored.
I am sorry but I find her obnoxious.
I bet her smile never reaches her eyes.

I still think the scriptwriters could and should have been more subtle.
It would have been nice to have been more surprised when she had her little outburst on Friday.
I must admit though I expected her to hang on in there for a bit longer.

  72. Also irritated by most of last night's offering, ✓✓ to your points, Lady R . Shula is simply an annoying pest, like a wasp with a whine instead of a sting. The art project is just for her to have something to do & feel somehow significant, it's not a genuine interest, imo.Why should anyone clamour to be on her committee? Weird that she should suddenly express an interest in A.'s feelings ( at the wrong moment, too, as you say !) - again, an expression of her neediness rather a genuine concern.
Chris featuring again, rather like that, whatever SL develops there.
Find your estimate of Natasha perfectly plausible, GG. An urban character exposed to rural ways, including extended family & close knit, nosey community.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I find the character Tom to be a pathetic wimp, and Natasha rightly spotted a dickhead with land. He, on her advice planted fruit trees, reorganised the veg boxes, suggested moving Tony and Pat into a new build bungalow so they could have the house. When that didn't happen she wanted to rent an expensive house, at least he put his foot down, and. persuaded Tom to get rid of the pigs, causing Jazzer to leave. Nasher is a bit like Elizabeth Bott, if Tom isn't going in her direction she stamps her feet, not an nice trait. An awful lot of happenings in a short marriage, oh I nearly forgot, the dreadful tattoos.
All the talk of cricket, sandwiches, Shula's art, and for heavens sake, Jolene being a rural Mariah Carey session group singer, was too much boring listening.
Last, but not least, poor Mia making cricket teas and being interrupted!!!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Natasha was a bit bombarded with local interest in her notably Peggy’s! I can see she feels trapped and Tom’s honeymoon plans will only take her a few miles away so no escape there! However having made her commitment to Tom, you do feel she could try harder to rise above it all.

I’m sorry but belief is stretched that Jolene can hit the big time even as a backing singer!

  78. I thought that Mia was going to sound out Clarrie about the possibility of Poppy-care if she went to live with her father for a while. I really wish she would, the poor girl needs a rest. Everyone praises her skills as a little mother, without noticing the toll it is taking, notably on her education. Imagine living with Will, and looking after an infant, at her age.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Just listened again to the 2.00pm repeat whilst driving home from Heathrow. The cricket tea story was absolutely ridiculous. Four hours to provide an acceptable tea for about 30 men, women and boys! I presume someone had to dash into Borchester midday Sunday to a supermarket to obtain fresh bread, ham, the fairy cakes and anything else they thought of but did not mention. Then back to Ambridge to make the sandwiches and lay out the tea all before the first innings finished at about 3.45-4pm.
I will shop Thursday, bake Friday, make sandwiches Saturday morning and arrive at the ground 1.30pm to lay out the tea and assemble the clotted cream scones. Tea then washing up and packing everything back into the car will enable me to get home by about 5.30.
But it was nice of Will to take Chris over to Clarrie and especially Mia to praise and thank them.

The constant interruptions of Mia though who obviously wanted advice from her loving step grandma was as others have said very lazy writing. I don't recognise the name of this weeks writer Sarah McDonald Hughes. I suspect she is new. In fact she has only been writing for a couple of years, with just nine episodes of Doctors to her credit. Predictably following a tried and tested pattern of soap writing to extend the suspense though.

However, when I slap on my sunscreen I often forget my exposed ears, so often suffer.
I had at one time, a cat with white ears. I always put sunscreen of her ears (as per vets instructions) but still forget my own. 👂👂

  95. I like Lynda's idea of a pair of feet being washed, especially that Jim had cut Joe's toe nails.
I see you're not impressed with the 52/48 reference, saturation point I guess.

    2. 52% vs 48%. Alistair made a purchase for 52 pence and got 48 pence change.

  96. I hope that the SWs give Joe a dignified ending, which will be sooner rather than later.
I hope Joe passes away, in a place he loves or with those he cares for.
My thoughts are just - in The Cider Shed, or with Gem + Bartleby.
However, Joe wanted to end his days at Grange Farm and so he should, so will Eddie find him in the kitchen, with his ferrets.
    Any other thoughts?
