More cows!

  1. Or even pigs.....
    Sorry, I couldn't resist that.

The pigs tie in nicely with the Jazzer + Tom situation. I am definitely a member of the Jazzer Fan Club.

  2. Many thanks, Ruthy, for starting us off again.
Like you, Lanjan, I posted 3 times but didn't check 'load more' - it was a response to a post from Seasider - but have now deleted 2 of them.

  4. I know I am going to the opticians on Friday, 8 weeks after 1st cataract op....but I obviously need eyesight correcting, more than I am thinking. I thought that they were pigs 👀🤓 Oops.

My favourite Archers characters are, as they always have been, and in no particular order:- Lillian, Bert and Jazzer.
Why, just that they are all so different in so many ways.

    2. It isn’t your all your fault Freddie.
If your mother had explained the situation to you,you might have realised that there was only one option.

I am most impressed by the change in Freddie’s character.
It started with his chat with Leonard and now his chat with Kenton has shown him in a much better light.
I think he has reason to feel annoyed with Elizabeth even though she thought she was doing the right thing to help her son.

      Delete
    3. I don’t agree with you there Lanjan. I think it is all Freddie’s fault. If he hadn’t gone down the druggie route none of this would have happened.

      Delete
    4. That's true enough PtbY.
But many young people lads and lassies go off the rails, some of them becoming druggies.
However Freddie has done his time, and seems to have ' manned up' to all that he was required to be subjected to whilst doing so.
He must have been truly tortured by the attitudes inevitably displayed by his fellow inmates, as a 'posh boy gone wrong', but he hasn't chosen to tell all about his time inside, rather he bit the bullet and got on with it.
Unlike his mother who went to pieces.
Freddie having been caught young, may well have learned his lesson and could turn himself round.
I have known a number of people who when young were ' wild' and even criminal who have done so.
And when that happens, in my experience, they turn into reliable and responsible citizens.
I include myself in this category.

    5. I totally agree Mrs P. I was just stating that ultimately it his his fault that LL is facing these problems. I also agree with whoever said he seems to have listened to Leonard and now to Kenton in a more mature manner.

      Delete
    6. Yes agree, the current low fortunes of LL are certainly the consequence of
      Young Freddie's reckless actions.
      And he certainly was reckless.
Both Nolethando and Lily pointed that out to him, and yet he blundered on, refusing to heed their pleas.

      Delete
    7. Freddie give his solemn promise to Nolly that he would stop dealing and as soon as she was out of earshot was back on his phone to Ellis. I think he is morally shallow and easily swayed.

      Delete
    8. Agree Maryellen, very few morals and easily swayed.
      But still redeemable.
      In time.
      And given moral support.

  6. I agree with everything you all say about Freddie but had Elizabeth not had a row with her excellent Manager Geraldine forcing the poor woman to resign and had she not insisted that Freddie should return to LL after he had returned from gaol ,she would not be in the parlours state she finds herself in now.
I cannot understand how she can afford to run the place at the best of times.
She must have quite a few staff-gardeners ,waitresses ,cleaners etc.
The cost of running LL must be enormous.
How on earth even in the best of times can she make it pay?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I suppose it depends on the conferences and, previously, the weddings. Prestigious and picturesque places charge phenominal prices for the 'hire' of one day. Cleaners and waitresses are all probably on zero hour contracts so would only be called in on the days when they are needed.
Thus the absence of any wedding receptions would seriously affect the income. They have had just one wedding there in the past six months (where they bought their own drinks.)
However I totally agree that it is Elizabeth's fault because she still treats Freddie as a baby. Had she treated him like a grown up and said 'We need to talk about the situation as it is at present,' I suspect he would have agreed a lot sooner than now that he should 'board' with Shula, which is what I suspect will happen.
I also agree with whoever said earlier that it was Nolotandu who instigated the whole drug selling business.Yet she has swanned off, leaving her mother stupidly proclaiming her daughter's innocence which we all know isn't true. There's dramatic irony for you !🙂

      Delete
    2. All the Pargetter family must carry some responsibility for the financial situation at LL.
Freddie’s little loss making enterprise is, as Kenton says small, it reminded me of a children’s garage jumble sale. His drug dealing on the premises not only lost the alcohol licence but his continued presence doesn’t help.
But how much did Russ’s pretentious Brexart gaffer tape exhibition cost? Were the invited arty guests paid expenses to attend and also provided with canapés whilst sipping champagne?
I have only ever run conferences and they are costly, can run into the thousands.
He has been a financial burden since he groomed Lily and then (horrors) Elizabeth calmly paid out £5,000 for rent arrears, after indulging in buying his expensive kitchen equipment, plus much more.
To some extent Lily and Freddie can be given some leeway on their judgements and decision making skills. However pussyfooting around Elizabeth about the financial situation and handing control of domestic and business arrangements to the *i am an artiste* Russ will be money down the drain. Does the NT beckon?

      Delete
  7. The truth is that Freddie is not or ever will be the brightest button in the box. Nolly had the common sense and moral integrity to pull out of drug dabbling - Freddie didn’t (see my post above). At the moment he is subject to good influences from those around him. He needs that to continue in his adult life in the shape of a partner who is brighter, has the business acumen and work ethic to realise his imaginative ideas, and can stop him going off the rails. (Now who is that beginning to make me think of??)

    1. But what woman would want to get seriously involved with her man who is conspicuously less intelligent ? ( apart from a control freak, that is) Thinking particularly about Tom & Natasha, whose marriage is falling, or has fallen, apart. Not that
Tom is as immature or slow as Freddie but certainly not as sharp as Natasha.

  8. The scenes with Jazzer, Jim,Tom and Fallon were all rather predictable but I found them fun to listen to all the same and the common factor at all three locations was coffee and food.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 👍 I’d have Jim as my Trade Union representative. His Verbosity would overwhelm any employer. Jazzer was too hasty in accepting a measly £4000 because he felt sorry for Tom. I suspect Tom will contact Hannah who will tell him not to pay up. She was very sly in how she manipulated Tom about the pigs, and definitely wanted to get rid of Jazzer.

      Delete
    2. Last nights scene with Jim, Jazzer and Tom was like a good poker game.
I wonder how long the three of them needed to rehearse to get it so slick.
      It was highly entertaining.

    3. Oh I do agree with you Mrs P
I love listening to Jim and Jazzer.
Definitely two of my favourite characters.

      Delete
    4. Treble ditto ! Mind you, Tom didn't fight at all, Jim was good, no help from Jazzer, but Tom's emotional turmoil crippled him in the negotiation.

      Delete
    5. Stasia, "I suspect Tom will contact Hannah who will tell him not to pay up". Did you mean Natasha ? Hannah got rid of a worker at her pig factory by reorganising shifts without consultation. Hannah would definitely advise Tom not to pay out.

      Delete
    6. Hannah did consult staff about her proposed rota changes - all agreed except one employee with a history of not working his contracted hours. But that was not why she proposed the new rota. I do not definitively know what she would advise Tom in the hypothetical scenario of him asking about Jazzer. Personally I think Tom should not have paid up but waited for Jazzer and Jim to take it to tribunal, which would have shown them up for the ludicrous pair they are, imo.

  9. The question of Freddie's residence first came up just before his release with Kenton saying that if he has any sense he'll move out with Elizabeth adamant that this is his home and that's where he belongs. Now that he's been back for a while and is in the picture, will he move out and would it set back Elizabeth on her road to recovery? After all she was prepared to flout his bail conditions and smuggle him into LL for his last night.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I agree that Freddie has to bear responsibility, I don’t have a major complaint about him dabbling in recreational and smart drugs to help him study (albeit ineffective) but continuing to get involved in dealing was plain stupid. As the judge pointed out he had a lot of advantages through his life so no reason to deal other than greed or “thrills “..... what an idiot. Hopefully he is starting to realise the real impact on his family, learn and mature.

    ReplyDelete
  11. What confuses me.....
LL is held in Trust, for when Freddie is deemed responsible enough, to inherit it.
Elizabeth is just realistically just controlling + managing it, as she doesn't own it, but she does have a life long home at LL.

I would have assumed, rightly or wrongly, that the trustees would be very aware of Freddies arrest + the loss of the alcohol licence. Also they must see profit/loss accounts from the accountants, plus tax bills re VAT etc, as it is now well after the financial year end of April 7th.
Who are the Trustees, and why haven't they stepped in yet -
    or even taken over??
Kenton is a poor substitute, but he has been very helpful and empathetic to all at at LL especially Elizabeth.

The Trustees just do not seem to be acting in a responsible way, to protect Freddie's eventual inheritance of LL.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. To add... I do realise the decline of LL, is partly down to Freddie, who has to be responsible for a lot of the problems, but certainly not all of them eg Geraldine leaving, the non alcohol licence appeal, the Halloween disaster.

    2. Nothing to do with shoe horning in the issue of mental health awareness, of course, valuable message as it is, but does such contrivance further the cause?

I kept trying to dredge my memory for ancient scenes in which Will and Elizabeth might have played together as children - don’t think they’re the same age but I was clutching at straws.

      Delete
    3. Yes, me too Seasider.
      And so very very contrived.
And did they forget to play a scene over recent days, where Elizabeth was told about Wills current state of mind, and somebody suggested she go and visit him ?

This is something which could affect anyone, in any situation and can cause so many problems for family + friends.

  14. I am not sure e that David was acting out of character,Basia,
He has been going on and on about the money Kenton owes him for ages and he can be quick to lose his temper.
I can understand his annoyance when Kenton spends money on ridiculous things
like Jolene’s photographs but I am sure David can afford to wait for the money.
If they have tied up Ruth’s inheritance for a long period of time then more fool them.
You should never lend any money to anyone if you can’t afford to lose it all.
I can’t remember how much it is now..
David can be quite petty at times .
Surely the thing to do was to get Kenton to pay it back in smaller regular payments.
Do you remember when he went to The Bull to get free meals in lieu of some of the debt?
I don’t really see why Kenton should not use Tony’s beef rather than David’s but maybe if it were my bother who had done that then I may too have been less than pleased.

    1. Kenton got another dig in about David inheriting the farm! The fact that K showed no interest in it is beside the point of course!!!

      Delete
  15. Just as I thought ah a nice episode Elizabeth trying to help Will in both a practical and emotional way and him responding he has to tear up the proffered leaflets. Understandably he is afraid that if he tries to accept Nics death and begins a life without her that he will be being disloyal to her and will somehow lose her completely but once he is able to come to terms with not having her earthly presence beside him she will become close again in his heart and memories but it will take time, as E said the gaps between the sadness will widen, which right now is what he is resisting.
Then of course we had to end with a shouting match in The Bull, and then E learning of Freddie’s wish to live with Nigel’s sister, presumably she does not know why he is doing so - yet?
(Maybe the actor has other commitments coming up.)

  16. Get on there David!!! Long overdue that row. The amount of times Kenton has dodged David when he wanted to discuss the loan quietly ....
I don’t blame David going off the deep end. The money was being paid back in small amounts but Kenton stopped that ages ago.
No, I reckon that’s the only way to get through to both Kenton and the rest of the family that they need the money back.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I agree PtbY. I’m only surprised David hasn’t had that public row before now, long overdue in my opinion.
I’m also surprised that Jill doesn’t stick up for David and tell Kenton he really should repay the debt immediately rather than just complain about them arguing.
And then there is Jolene, her efforts to repay the debt in monthly instalments seem to have been forgotten since she wanted expensive photos taken.
I feel sorry for David and don’t blame him for blowing his top!

      Delete
    2. I quite agree - a perfectly justified, overdue outburst ! Jill was so irritating; no one must ever speak their mind, happy families all the time, just brush the crumbs of dissension under the carpet..... Not helpful, not real.

      Delete
    3. Agreed to you both. Kenton has had untold money from the family over the years yet accuses David of being favoured by inheriting the farm.
As far as I remember the last time this came up was when Phil wanted to retire and Elizabeth demanded her 'fair share' of her parents' estate so Phil made it into a company. I think David and Ruth were to have the farm as long as they were working, take a salary from it but the farm was owned by Brookfield Farms Ltd with everyone having a certain number of shares ie, all four children and Jill.
Many years ago Kenton ran into serious debt in New Zealand and persuaded his parents to give him his projected share of their estate to pay off creditors. He seems to have forgotten this.

    5. ✔️✔️✔️Agree, long overdue.
David has until now been very patient despite his frustration.
Jill always needs to ameliorate, but in doing so within her family, nothing is ever resolved.
Kenton conveniently forgets the hand outs he had a a young man.

  17. Never a borrower nor a lender be (to family & friends). Having read the posts above, I agree, David ought to put the pressure on Kenton even though he can afford to wait and the beef must have clinched it. Now it's out in the open. Jill had all her children together, the sons falling out and a daughter with some bad news. Jill also said that Leonard resigned from the arts committee because he felt a fraud, living in Borchester, so the real reason is still to be revealed.

  18. Elizabeth turning up at Will’s door was contrived by the S/Ws to give us a lesson on the Kubler Ross stages of grieving. A mutual self help, ‘I know what it feels like’ scenario. Interesting considering that Elizabeth can’t see what is happening in her own household. So now we know Freddie’s incarceration unleashed her unresolved bereaved stage of depression. I suspect the S\Ws will encourage him to pick up the leaflets, [eventually) and contact a group offering support for bereaved husbands.
    Jill’s acting grrrrrrrr.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Found Jill consistent in her character, both in writing & performance. With earlier enterprises, not always available to do the Brookfield cooking, & now the advent of Leonard, she has branched out from narrow family concerns but old habits stay, & she's still very much wedded to the happy, harmonious family set up of '50s adverts & women's magazines. everyone must get on, no rows, all bland smiles & no inevitable, human clashes & conflict.

      Delete
  19. I am on my own I think about David’s outburst.
    Fair enough.
I think that the trouble is that all of Jill’s children are weak.
Jill has a lot to answer for.
(I expect to be on my own with this one too )

Incidentally ,how come we have never heard mention of Nigel’s sister before?
Surely she would have wanted to visit LL where presumably she grew up.
When would Freddie have met her?
What is wrong with going to stay with Auntie Shula and helping out in the stables?

I think the visit of Elizabeth to Will’s was totally ridiculous.
A bunch of flowers a year ago is not good enough.
What has made her -or the script writers- decide to visit him now?
I think ,Stasia, that you are right in what you say.

    3. That:s interesting, AP. It sounded like a good idea last night, because, as Cheshire Cheese says below, it would remove Freddie from Ambridge & constant jibes about his recent past, as well as enabling LL to have an alcohol licence.

Lan Jan, you are not entirely alone.
I agree with you that Jill has a lot to answer for.
She has always wanted her children to be friends with each other and has not allowed disputes to be resolved, but instead has sought to shut down any unpleasantness.
They in turn have become adults, frustrated by anger that they feel must be kept below the surface, which becomes resentment. So there is never any resolution brought about by adult negotiation with each other.

  20. I'm not convinced that the Elizabeth/Will scene was so clumsily contrived. Ok, the dialogue was obvious grief
sharing & standard views, what more could be expected, but I took from it that an aspect of E's therapy was shown to be working &, at the end, Will is still in denial. E. still has a long way to go about understanding her own personal & family situation ( LL, Freddie, Lily, Russ) but she is reaching out from the totally self absorbed bubble she's been in for a year. She's now capable of looking at another grieving spouse, going beyond the token flowers ( which Geraldine probably had ordered & delivered) & feeling a desire to reach out to someone who was bereaved so very recently, compared to the 8 years she's not processed the loss & the major life change.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. But is Will 'ill?' Surely grieving cannot be said to be 'mentally ill?'
I too found the idea of Elizabeth going, happily, round to see Will, with leaflets, absolutely ludicrous. I cannot remember Elizabeth being interested in any of the 'lower orders' in Ambridge at all.
William used to run around in Kate's 'gang' when they were at Primary School but Elizabeth was away at boarding school then. Will wasn't particular friends with Roy and Hayley so wouldn't have known Elizabeth through them. He hasn't been employed by anyone except Brian Aldridge and BL so has no connection with LoLo. Neither has Elizabeth been in anyway connected to the Grundys except that Clarrie used to 'char' at Brookfield and Elizabeth would have come across her there. Is there anything which would explain Elizabeth's actions? I can't think of anything.

      Delete
    2. I must comment on Will’s voice last night. The actor playing him gets a lot of stick for his accent and voice in general, but last night it was a pleasure to hear him speak in a kindly and reflective mode, not shouting or whining. Philip Molloy must have been pleased to be given more sympathetic lines to deliver.

      Delete
    3. Only what I wrote - beginning to notice other people's lives. They don't have to have been in the same play gang at school everyone knows everyone else in Ambridge. Agreed, grief isn't a mental illness of itself, & Will certainly knows how unhappy he is, how he misses Nic, no denial there, but he isn't coping with work, the children, everyday life, so everything is not 'fine', & he's in denial about that.

      Delete
    4. Elizabeth is about 15 years older than Will. She was 50 during the last couple of years.
Clarrie's father, Jethro and grandfather, Ned Larkin worked at Brookfield. Generations of Larkin women may have been cleaners there.
Clarrie and Joe mentioned Clarrie's grandma, Mabel Larkin. Clarrie was named after Mabel's sister, Clarice.

    3. Many Apologies Lanjan, for my earlier post.
I don’t like spoilers either and so I was very careful not to say who the actress is, but I realise I broke my own rule by mentioning the name of the character concerned.

My main point was about having another of those shipped in, well known actors and wondering if this is to boost the audience or because they really feel the particular actor is right for the part.
We have already had Alison Steadman and Eleanor Bron, and I think, Virginia McKenna, but they don’t seem to stay for long.

Once again, apologies to all who disliked my post - I’ll resist the temptation to do it again in future. 😞

  25. Someone has pulled together all the details about the loan and Kenton's history with money and I put it here for anyone's interest.
Sid Perks left his 49% share of The Bull to mostly Jolene but left a few shares to Jamie. (Not discovered how much) Lilian has the remaining 51%.
When TB was flooded it did £52k damage. However there was no insurance cover because Kenton had 'forgotten' to pay the premium.
Lilian paid £26k leaving Jolene (and Kenton) to find the remaining half. Elizabeth and Shula both gave/lent £4k each, Jill some too (possibly £2k) and David lent about £16k. When Jolene discovered to her horror that Kenton was not repaying the loan she set up a Banker's Order each month which Kenton arbitrarily cancelled a couple of months ago.
Someone on Mustardland posted a link to the blog Keri Davies did about Kenton and his lack of fiscal management and in it he confirmed the history of how Phil tried to appease all the children.

  27. Ruthy, I agree Freddie should leave for a period of time to allow the history of the drug dealing to die down. If he has a relative who is willing to support him whilst he gains employment that should help to rehabilitate him! and hopefully the future of LL. It may also allow him to grow up and not be stifled by Elizabeth.
Lanjan I’m with you on David and Jill. David could go to the courts to get the money back, or write it off as a case of poor judgement lending to his brother.
I think I commented previously, the Archer Academics decided that Jill and Peggy were both bad mothers. Jill is a *there, there* mother, lets bake a lemon drizzle 🍰 and it will all go away. It’s her acting I find irritating not the character.

  28. As far as I am concerned:-
a)Kenton owes David the money that was lent to him, regardless of how much.

c)Kenton has not fulfilled his pay back by cancelling the SO
d)I agree with David, for once.

  34. Why does Freddie have to deliver his lines in a whiny 😫 little boy voice? He could sound like Kenton, and in a serious voice tell Lily why it is necessary for him to leave. ‘Listen Sis LL is going down the tubes, no alcohol license means no profit, and no future for us as a business. Mums failure to make decisions, and you bringing the pseudo artist 👩‍🎨 to sponge is leeching money we don’t have. Plus my criminal history has not presented a positive image of what will be my ancestral heritage’.

Without Freddie, is Lily suddenly realising, that she can now no longer think of leaving LL to have her a life of her own?

  37. It didn't make sense to me that Freddie did not tell Lily that LL is going to go bankrupt if they don't get their alcohol licence back. That is the truth and she needed to hear it. Perhaps it's time for Freddie to have an honest conversation with his mother. She is improving gradually and if she understands the genuine reasons why Freddie needs to move away she could accept it.
IMHO David was way over the top in disowning Kenton as a brother. Yes, Kenton owes him money and he needs to pay it back. David needs to bring Jolene into this conversation as surely she would realize that she's been wasting money on photos when they are in debt.
I was pleased to hear Will's new take on Mia moving out and hope he can continue in that vein.

I agree with what you say Anneveggie about Kenton ,David and Jolene.
Perhaps Lilian is the one to talk to J’lene and tell her straight that a woman of her age is not going to pull in the punters.
Having said that I want Mia to stay with Will I now think that if he can accept that she doesn’t want to live there ,that Poppy is happy and keeps getting gold stars and that Poppy and Mia will still be able to meet up , it might workout better if thins are left as they are.
I do hope that Mia comes to meet her step father though.

  39. Miriam. I sorry you didn’t see the cynicism in my comment about Freddie’s whining voice. I’m aware of the age difference and the awfulness of his prison experience! and the need to keep his head down. But Kenton was honest with him as he will supposedly inherit LL. Lily knows getting the license back is important, but is possibly not fully cognisant of the financial problems. She at least went out and got a job so isn’t around too much to appreciate the extent of LL financial difficulties. Lily was the only support for Elizabeth when Freddie stupidly got himself caught dealing. However, She did compound the problem by shacking up with a man old enough to be her father, and who now appears to be a wonderful support to the twins mother.???
I think Kenton was sincere when discussing the future of LL with Freddie.
The situation with David is another matter. Unlike his brother and sister Kenton is at least helping the intransigent (I will clutch Freddie to my bosom) Elizabeth. 👩‍👧‍👦

  41. David lent Kenton that money shortly after The Flood in March 2015.
I think he is justified in wanting this loan back, after 4 years. He has waited a long time for full repayment. Kenton/Jolene must be aware that a large VAT bill was due. If they did their accounts properly, they would surely know the amount owed, month by month.
I don't accept the excuse that Kenton was busy at LL. This has a full time, and qualified manager, Glenn. He is employed to run the business, do all the accounts, and who obviously approved of Russ + his expenditure on the Gallery, as an ongoing concern.
Kenton has been very supportive to Lizzie, on a personal level, and this I am not in dispute with.
However, if Kenton can't manage and control his own business accounts at - The Bull - which is a far less smaller enterprise than LL, I am at a loss at to what enterpreneaul skills he has provided towards LL for the long term.

PS I would love to hear about the Freda Fry rose, which was so lovingly planted by Bert, in memory of his beloved wife, at The Bull.

  43. Regarding the loan, I was very surprised at Jill making excuses for Kenton not paying it back. Shula had a much more sensible view of the situation. Maybe Jill has always excused his devil may care attitude which explains why he is so immature. The way he kept avoiding David and taking responsibility for the repayment was pathetic. Whether David needs the money or not is irrelevant. It is a debt which should be paid back and cancelling the SO was inexcusable. I wonder that David kept his cool for so long! 46. I loved that awful caricature of Camilla.
At least the correct situation has now happened. As to Freddie + Lizzie - they both can now live close by, they can visit and see each other as often as they want and still enjoy a family life together, along with Shula.
Freddie at The Stables, will also help Shula with more continuity in her own situation, as she has someone to care for again and won't be living on her own.
It's a Win Win result, but a long time in coming, as so many predicted this outcome so long ago.

  47. Nobody behaves like that.
How ridiculous as Carolyn says to show Camilla acting in that way.
They could have done without hiring whichever well known actress that was because we all knew
that Freddie would end up with Shula.
Also ,I am sure thatCamilla would have realised that one does not talk about “the hoi polloi” since hoi is the definite article and therefore it is akin to saying “the the masses”
Mind you I have heard “the Hoi Polloi”(sic) being mentioned on the BBC before so possibly the script writers are unaware of their mistake.

    2. I absolutely agree, Archerphile. It was worse than amateur. I assume the Camilla-actor wais lured by the quick buck, plus the fact that radio is kinder to ageing actors. The pointless cricket episodes sounded as if a cast had been scrambled together and told to ad lib. The internal logic was haywire. I felt at the time of the current editor’appointment that it sounded to me like a phasing out prior to retirement job, and episodes like this support my theory.

I that case she must have felt annoyed when Nigel was handed LL because of the primogeniture laws at that time.
That doesn’t excuse yesterday’s farcical behaviour of course but she may have felt that her beloved former home was not exactly looking at its best.

  55. I have only just been able to catch up and, after reading last night's and this mornings postings, felt I must stick up for Patricia Hodge!
I have long been a fan of hers and was pleased last week when I saw that she was to play Camilla. However it was not her acting but the dreadful script that let the character down. I'm afraid we have had cause to complain before about cliched characters when this week's writer has written the script!
Julia didn't like Elizabeth either but her asides and comments were not downright rude but witty or sarcastic . The comments about depression were so clunky as to be laughable. It was not a fitting end to Mental Illness Awareness week.
As Archerphile said Patricia Hodge has done countless stage, film and stage roles both serious and she's a very good comedian too! Add to that she is absolutely beautiful.
To suggest she's an aging actress lured by a quick buck is insulting, imv.
No, the fault lies in the words she had to say and the character she had to project. It appears she did her job well as everyone heartily despised the character! 😃

I can't see that can be taken in any other way than being 'an insult.'
The 'worse than amateur' comment was ambiguous as it could have referred to the script or the performance
I'll agree that PH may not be beautiful in everyone's eyes but I am in awe of the exquisite bone structure of her face. So, as I said, I think she is absolutely beautiful.
She certainly didn't look 72 years old in the last photo I can find of her so there is no reason at all why she should switch to radio (inferring what? She has to read a script, her looks have gone?)

  62. I seem to be in a massive minority, in that-
I loved the pantomime, caricature of Camilla. Patricia Hodge did a great job, as the haughty, self-centred, younger sister of Nigel.
I think the SW's did a good job.

The main thing, regardless of the criticisms, is that Freddie is staying in Ambridge, at The Stables.

    1. I enjoyed it too. Camilla is her mother's daughter. Julia looked down her nose at Elizabeth, the farmer's daughter. Julia made a favourite of Freddie, the son & heir and had no time for Lily when they were babies. Camilla obviously has only ever listened to Julia's opinions about Nigel's wife & children. Camilla sounded very Hazel Woolley-like. Camilla was probably spoiled by Daddy, as Hazel was.

      Delete
    2. I though Camilla sounded more like Elizabeth’s mother in law than sister in law and assumed she was Nigel’s considerably older sister ( he and Elizabeth were much the same age, weren’t they?) so was surprised to learn that she was younger than him and presumably younger than Elizabeth.

      Delete
    3. Nigel was a few years older than Elizabeth, closer in age to Shula, ( with whom he was involved before marrying Elizabeth) so Camilla could easily be a couple of years younger than Nigel and still 3-4 years older than Elizabeth. So young enough to understand that mental health issues are a serious problem but often brought up in “the pull yourself together “ ethos.

Little Freddie is back with his his auntie Shula, he took the long way round there on his bicycle, so Russ remains lord of the manor.

This is where the milk depot is, so that Jazz can get there, to pick up his milk float so it has to be local. Is this Mike's old milk bottling business?
If so, is the new owner buying milk from local farms such as Brookfield?
    I am just curious, as...
Are the Ambridge residents buying + drinking/using local milk, or that which has been sourced from further afield?

    1. Answer, if there is one will be in TA archive.
I think that the person who bought Mike's milk-round was an established milk-round operator. S/he may have just added Mike's customers to an existing set-up. When Ed and Mike were in business they employed a bottling assistant (Darrell's daughter, Brummie accent) and another milkman (young man called Harry, one-time swain of Fallon?).
I think Brookfield milk goes to a local milk co-op. Not The Co-op but a co-op. No idea what happens to it then.
A few years ago there were 4 dairy herd in Ambridge, Brookfield, Bridge Farm, Grange Farm (Ed's Jerseys) and Berrow Farm (aka Cowditz, Mega-dairy). I'm not sure if they were all operational at same time. TA business advisor pointed out that in the real world of milk costing more to produce than it was sold for, they weren't all viable.
I suppose the village shop sells milk. Perhaps that's what is delivered at 5 a.m., annoying Natasha.

  73. How did Freddie manage to forget he had a cousin, Piers, Camilla's son? OK, I forgot about him but he's not my cousin and I've never "seen" or heard him. Freddie has only 6 cousins, not dozens. I think he's older than Freddie. I have a vague memory of Julia rhapsodizing about the birth of her 1st grandchild. He was perfect in every way. Then Freddie, heir to Lower Loxley came along and Pier's sun was eclipsed.
I assume, from Camilla's words to Freddie on Sunday, promising him an internship, that her husband or son or both is/are "something in the city". Nigel worked in financial services when he was in London.

  74. Re Jill.......
    Exactly ,Lady R.
What is that silly woman thinking of?
Does she want to cause an even bigger feud than there is at present between her sons?.
At the moment Kenton has turned her offer down but if mouthy Jolene hears about it she may put in her fourpennorth and realise she can have her expensive photographs taken if he accepts Jill’s offer.

    1. But if Kenton did accept Jill’s offer they would still have to repay her at some stage.
Unless, as I suggested above, It was specified in Jill’s will that Kenton was to receive £20,000 (or whatever the sum is) less than her other children.
That, of course, supposes that Jill intends to leave her assets to be divided among her 4 children, but she might intend to leave some to her various grand and great-grand children.
And who knows, possibly even Leonard, if they get even closer!
I wonder who will get Glebe Cottage? 🤔

    2. It seems that Kenton had two reasons for not accepting Jill’s money. Firstly even he has reservations about accepting it from his elderly mother but mostly I think because he is determined to make David wait. It is so childish and Jill would have been better to give him a good talking to about accepting his responsibilities like a big boy! It is exactly the let’s bail Kenton out philosophy that has made him into this irresponsible adult!

  75. The last two episodes have been benign and dull. Freddie rehabilitated, the vicar with his duties to the elderly, Elizabeth on the mend, Jill with her let’s all play happy families, but predictably not Kenton. Shula as Vicar of Ambridge! Pull the other one, she can’t even manage the arty, farty group.
    The lull before the storm?

    1. Are you complaining that there have been a couple of fairly pleasant, happy episodes Stasia?
I was grateful not to have doom, gloom, arguments and crises for a couple of nights!
But perhaps my ‘satisfactory’ is your ‘boring’! Everyone is different.

    2. Archerphile. I don’t mind quiet episodes if the scrip is interesting and the acting convincing. I suppose any dialogue with Jill delivering the the lines leaves me unconvinced. The cricket conversations, a game I know absolutely nothing about, have more umph in the content. If I was really bored 😐 I would say, the word I used was dull. I also don’t appreciate doom and gloom re EEs type drama, but a bit of humour and silliness would be nice. Let’s have more Kate, Tracy, Lilian even Brian to lighten things up a bit.
      😁😊

    3. Sorry, Stasia, my comment was written a bit tongue—in-cheek but it’s difficult to put that across in a post! 😉
We all enjoy different things in TA don’t we? For example, the cricket club scenes are probably dull for a lot of listeners but as a former cricket scorer with a qualified cricket umpire husband I enjoy them because it’s something I understand and enjoy.
But, unlike many people, I can’t stand Tracey and I found her behaviour at the cricket match appalling whereas others probably found it amusing.
I too like a good dose of humour to lighten the more serious stories and Keri Davis often injects humour into his scripts whereas some other SWs can be rather dull and plodding.
I looked up this week’s SW to find it is Paul Broderick. I didn’t think much of his script for Sunday (esp. the words he put into Camilla’s mouth) but will reserve judgement until We’ve heard the rest of this week’s episodes.
I suppose it is all summed up in the saying ‘you can’t please all of the people all of the time’. 😊

    4. I got the impression that Jill was just going to hand the money over to Kenton just to close the matter.
I also got the impression-perhaps she said so-that it was just between them and that David need not be told.
      Perhaps I got that wrong.
One thing I did think of though was that should Jill follow the trend of certainArchers characters and decide to have a speedy wedding to Leonard she had better change her Will because once she married her previous Will be be revoked.
I bet Jill hasn’t changed her Will for years.
Rosie might have to be content with whatever Pip passes on to her.
Jill is possibly very well off.
She may give David and Ruth a bit towards the housekeeping but she has her cottage and Carole is paying rent and she doesn’t exactly go mad with the money she has available.

  76. Archerphile,I do like Tracey but I do not believe she would have behaved as she did at the cricket match.
    It wasn’t amusing.
Is it the script writers way of saying that she is “common” and that is the way those type of people may behave?
    If so that is appalling.
Chris should have banned her from playing if that had been the case.
I also find the fact that she actually knows the fielding positions.
Many people who regularly watch County and England matches are not able to say where silly mid on or short square leg are.

    1. In addition to growing up playing cricket, and probably watching it live or on tv, Tracey has been playing for Ambridge for 2 ( or is it more?) seasons, so it would be strange if she didn’t know the positions like the male players do. Some of them are also working class. I doubt she would have been asked to be vice-captain if she didn’t have full knowledge of the game.

    2. Speaking of "common" (working class?) - the way Jazzer said to Jim "It's amazin' how you know aw they big words an' that" was excruciating! But then, I suppose it IS difficult to show ACTUAL forelock tugging on the radio...

Wth regards to what Tracey said to Tom on the pitch, I played team sports for years. She would have been asked to leave the team saying that to him, never mind the field of play! That kind of "competitive" behaviour is just rude, boorish bullying, and you don't do it to the opposition never mind someone on your own side!!

    3. You haven’t convinced me Maryellen.
She never showed any interest in the Game (not that we heard anything much from her) until the BBC had to get involved with the feminist movement by introducing female players into male cricket teams which I still find strange and I am pleased that it hasn’t reached the County Game yet.
I am obviously the opposite from being a feminist but I prefer it as it is.

I may well be wrong but I doubt there are many mixed teams around in leagues up and down the Country.
I find it strange that young women who have for many years played rounders and tennis at school are suddenly as good as young men who have been brought up at school to play cricket from early years
Was it Anesia (sp,) who had never played before found she could suddenly bowl?
I am not involved in cricket now but once was very much involved.
I remember many years ago a County cricketer telling me that he did not know the fielding positions and once asked the Captain if he was supposed to go under the tree.
Perhaps Spiceycushion can tell me if I am incorrect in anything I have said in which case I may! take it back.

  77. Jill is just so unfair to her four children and even unfairer to Kenton who she would have been better giving him a flea in his ear for being childish, irresponsible and nasty. He should never have borrowed the money from David if he wasn't prepared to pay it back as soon as possible and in good faith.

  79. Just to add to my previous comment,I can’t imagine when Tracey was playing cricket in the park one of her brothers is likely to have said ‘I want you to field at short square leg’ or at “long on “
He is more than likely have told her to go and field in front of a certain bush.
Again I may be wrong but I can’t imagine Tracey having the time to sit and watch cricket matches. on the television.
