Life in Ambridge

  1. Thanks Gary.
Looks a bit like my house 🏠 but with some differences.
    Who lives there?

    1. Woodbine Cottage - Brookfield's former tied cottage on the village green now home to Fallon and Harrison. Looks lovely doesn't it? If your house is similar stasia, then lucky you!

  2. Just listened to the ' Saturday in Ambridge ' soundscape.
I enjoyed it while reading the blog.
But like PtbY - it was what I can hear walking down the lane, or even just walking up my neighbours drive and standing looking at the sweeping loveliness across the valley, with the sheep in the pasture below.

Thank you GG for two for one new blogs.

  3. Now I know where Jolene has been all summer. Someone should tell Kenton she’s not been on tour at all - she's been moonlighting down in St Isaacs as the schoolteacher in Doc Martin!

  4. The “eavesdropping in Ambridge” is what we on this blog do everyday along with many millions elsewhere.
Are we all really Susan eager to hear the latest and gossip with each other about the neighbours?
John cage the composer wrote a work called ‘4.33minutes’ and the audience and musicians had to sit in silence. Just like the countryside silent it was not. A critic commented, ‘I wait to hear 👂 a longer composition’.

  5. I really don’t know why it was thought necessary for Jolene to go on Tour.
Kathy still potters around GG apparently and she hasn’t been heard of for years
Of course there may be a storyline from that storyline if Jolene meets an old flame on the Tour🥰

    1. I don’t think it is just a vanity project - she is bringing in very welcome income.

      Delete
  6. .....but what do we know about Jolene’s Tour?
Is she travelling round the Country and is staying in Hotels?
Is she still living at home and only working locally?
If the latter then presumably she is only working in the evenings so could be around in The Bull during the day.
Kenton is having to employ extra staff because of Jolene’s absence.
Oh I know Lilian is working there without pay but no doubt she gets paid in G and Ts .
That doesn’t ring true to me either.

  7. I am very intrigued what Vince decides to actually do with Crawfords, now that he is the owner.
I doubt, that it will go smoothly, and that it, certainly won't appeal to the Ambridge Farmers to resolve their abbatouir problems.
This is a new TA related story, but I am not sure if it will be a relevant one, or perhaps not.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Something I've noticed of late, an increase in ' realistic sounds ' in TA.
Background sounds related to what is going on, machinery, Linda's Llamas tonight.
Can't put my finger on others at the moment but a definite increase.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think we have also had the answer to LanJans question about where Jolene might be.
A reference by Ian tonight suggests that she is at The Bull at least some of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I enjoyed Kate’s singing to Xander very much - such a sweet voice.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Run, Jakob, run ! She's one of those who go weak at the knees with babies, but no interest once they're walking & talking. She's got form - three abandoned children.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Maryellen I thought that Kate’s singing was the best part of an otherwise uninteresting episode including a Fairbrother talking to himself .
I thought Elizabeth had a cheek in asking Lynda to help her out in raising money for LL.
I reckon Lynda will decide to do it though .

    ReplyDelete
  13. Agree, nice African lullaby from Kate, and yes a sweet voice.
Far nicer than her speaking voice which I find screechy.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Ian seems to be suffering from acute father anxiety going by his fussing about Xander tonight. Adam as usual, was very laid back about Kate taking the baby for a walk and convinced she would be fine looking after him.
Which is a bit strange, seeing that Kate abandoned Phoebe when she was a baby and hasn't the best track record in motherhood..

    ReplyDelete
  15. I found Ian's fussiness over Xander annoying but agree that Adam's confidence in Kate's baby caring is not borne out by her history with her own children.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I could very happily listen to 14 minutes of Kate singing South African lullabies to Xander, so hope Ian soon gets over his separation anxiety and she gets to mind Xander more often. Jazzer has a nice singing voice too, though less polished than Kate’s, imo.

    ReplyDelete
  17. “Relax, he’s with Kate”. Adam sounded as though he was glad Xandy was out of sight and evidently out of mind, that Kate taking him out for a walk didn’t even phase him. A woman who abandoned three children!!
Maybe she is the sort of mother who wants babies so she dangle large crystals over them whilst singing African lullabies, but dispenses with them when they can walk and talk.
I can’t face the future listening to fuss pot Ian droning on about Xandy needing a bottle and nappies changing and the house being dirty whilst laid back Adam shows not the slightest interest in the miraculous Alexander.
Jakob, beware you might be left with a dangling baby in your arms.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Some mothers dangle large plastic or fluffy nylon objects in the form of mobiles over ther baby’s pram and/or cot!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Lovelyto hear Thula Baba, Zulu lullaby; we perform it with the chorale, they love it, despite the challenging pronunciation!

    1. carolyn.8.05 pm. Have just read back to your comment. I did read it early this morning whilst having my tea and toast, it must have lodged in my subconscious and rose to the surface as I was writing. I award you the Ambridge Medal for Informational Transmission.

So we have told by Rextra brother that Tobextra has a dirty still. The end of Scruff Gin, perhaps?

      Delete
    2. Yes Stasia, I noticed that little reference to a dirty still being slipped in, all so casually.
I do hope we are not going to have a story about gin poisoning, in the lead up to Christmas. That would do Toby’s business, nor his reputation, no good at all!

      Delete
    3. By the way, are artisanal alcohol producers subject to checks by Environmental Health inspectors, I wonder?
If so, Toby better have a bit of a clean up before he gets a visit.

  21. T.Rex were on form talking about booze and sex.
Kate knows how to handle babies, even though she abandoned hers as children.
Ian can't relaX without X (can't stand the name) but he's right about not leaving him with Kate for reasons of kidnap - which Adam said she wouldn't before Ian saw her in action.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Don't take to Kate one little bit, but taking baby to see Great Grandma who lives in same village, hardly equates to kidnap.

    1. Every village needs an eccentric like Kate. Did she actually take Xandy to Peggy’s because Ian discovered her in one of the ⛺️ yurts. If she had wouldn't Hilda Ogden have gobbled him up for breakfast?

      Delete
  23. I'm on Kate's side in the discussion about her baby sitting of little Xander. The poor little thing doesn't need Ian stressing around him, and micro managing every moment of his day. I know from my own experience that the one thing new born babies need is peace and quiet and a feeling of security. What better than having Kate singing an African lullaby to him in the calm atmosphere of one of the yurts. Great vibes - and the crystal won't hurt him, so long as he isn't left alone with it. Might even be an influence for good. Yes, Kate does lose interest in her own children as soon as they begin to walk and talk, but, in my opinion, at the moment, she is the perfect auntie for him.

  24. Now that I have caught up with TA, may I just say:-
The Christmas Extravangza must surely be taken over by Joy....
I loved the mention of Lynda's Llamas...
I am waiting for Freddie to really make his mark at Grey Gables, which will really help when he eventually takes over
    L Loxley....
I think Kate (at 42) finally realised what she missed, with her own children....
And so TA goes on, to entertain us all.

  25. The build-up for Joe's sad passing seems to now be starting.
I just hope that whenever it will be, it will be peaceful, with his family all around him.
I just hope that it doesn't drag on for weeks.

  26. I think you may be correct Miriam, all pertinent members of the cast in situ now.
Eddy, Clarrie, Emma and Oliver. The boys were in evidence last week and the cider making has been aired.
And today, Emma brought the cushion.
Can't be far off now, perhaps as you have suggested before, in his armchair with the addition of Emma's cushion.

  31. Kate, Tobextra and Basil they aren’t even worthy of derision or mockery.
More sexual innuendo and we poor listeners are subjected to silly and definitely unfunny, poor storylines, whilst they figure out how end Joe’s life.
The lull before the celebration of the life of Our dear JoeGrundy. He, who was so honest, a wonderful asset to his family and the Ambridge community and a great environmentalist.
Alas dear old Joe, we knew him well
His life was long and stories he could tell
Of tradition and scrumping of apples that fell
Into the press to make cider he would sell
And to those who supped it tasted like hell.

    1. 😊😆, Stasia ! Both the prose & verse say it all so well.
They're certainly going to.milk Joe's demise to push all current Grundy SLs out of impasse into resolution of some kind.
Emma was lovely, but Clarrie was cold & wary. I can understand that where Susan is concerned, it'll take time, but she's shared so much of family life with Emma, they became close, why can't she see Ed's fallibility ? Blood thicker than....I suppose.

  33. I have just read in next weeks Radio Times a letter from an Archers listener called Janet who thought the Sunday lunch at LL to which Tracy had invited herself was hilarious 😂 and brilliantly written. Then to my disappointment she writes she can’t wait to see the exit of Russ, “but
    please, not yet”.
Janet, if you contribute here or read the blog, please don’t encourage the S/Ws to give the pompous man any more airtime.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I haven't seen that, yet, as I get my RT on a Friday/Saturday.

I so agree. Tracy at LL was a brilliant and funny interlude, amongst all the more serious Ambridge goings on.
I also agree, in that Russ needs to disappear, quietly and easily. I don't think Lily and Freddie will really miss him.

      Delete
  34. LL - has Lizzie been able to replace Hugh in The Orangery, now he has gone GG??
Nothing has been mentioned, well yet.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Oo, I don't want Russ to.leave quietly, but rather with a wailing & gnashing of teeth !
He needs to be exposed for what he is. What's his ultimate game ? Is the divorce going to be forever delayed or does a wife, in fact, exist ? It could be a ploy to avoid getting too committed to LL, by marriage to Lily, for instance, or by the girl's accidental pregnancy on the lines of Pip's ? He can make a hasty getaway when news comes that 'she' is ill, or sectioned for attempting suicide ? However it happens, he will surely be found out.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I really understand your ideas. However, after the Rob scenario, I personally, would prefer Russ,
to float away from Ambridge, silently, without causing any angst to anyone.
I obviously live in an ideal + dream world.

  36. I wonder if Emma might be pregnant....

    ReplyDelete
  37. How wrong I was, and I admit it.
I was convinced that Lexi would not give up the baby, but she has left Ambridge, happy to return to her home and daughters, and her own life.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Roy and Lexi seemed to have quite a friendly and relaxed parting, with no wailing or recriminations on either side. I am glad Roy has apparently recovered from his upset at Lexi’s refusing to become more involved.
Perhaps he can now get on with the rest of his life and find a loving partner who will make him happy for the long run.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Good point Maryellen
I wouldn’t be at all surprised
Since the Grundys are all around at the moment I expect Joe’s demise will be tomorrow’s cliff hanger

    ReplyDelete
  40. If Joe is to become “Poor Old Joe” ( the way we always seem to refer to the departed, in our family!), at least it should resolve some of the family problems about where they are all going to live when Oliver sells Grange Farm.
With Joe gone and if Ed does move out to find his own place (with Roy, perhaps) there should be plenty of space at No.1, The Green, for Clarrie, Eddie, Will and Poppy. Hopefully it will ease some of the tension in the family and we can start hearing about a few other Ambridge stories.

P.S. thinks : who will buy Grange Farm when it is cleaned up enough to sell? Could it be Brian & Jennifer, or will another silent family move in, like those at Home Farm ? 🤔

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm just pleased that Joe will have his last swig of cider for his send off.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Archerphile(8.47pm) Your PS, maybe JE will buy it, use for offices or demolish it, & have a purpose built block in its place ? Yuk ! (but it might be listed, of course)

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well Kirsty wasn’t very subtle in her hints to Phillip about babies, and he not so subtly ignored her.
Perhaps he has had the snip and hasn’t told her.
Kate getting broody with Z, Ed wanted Emma to have more, and now Kirsty. Has Ambridge been impregnated with a baby bug?
    Wasn’t Rosie enough?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Stasia(10.17am), well, they're all 'women of a certain age', though the real need is Kirsty's. Agreed, we, the vital listeners, have had enough. I don't mind the cooing over Xander so much, mustn't begrudge people their moments with the new born, but could do without endless talk about Rosie's care, mainly because we're subjected to Pip & her peculiar enunciation & annoying attitudes, let alone Toby bouncing in frequently (must admit, contrary to most, did chuckle at the absurd exchange between him & Kate; so silly, but they both ARE so silly, can't expect anything better from either)
Yes, Philip is definitely ignoring the maternal yearnings. I bet you're right about the snip !

    ReplyDelete
  45. Why couldn't Philip just not want to have another child? Why must there be a conspiracy on his behalf? Besides which the Snip is frequently successfully reversed.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree with Pierre les C, why does Philip have to have had the snip, perhaps he and Kirsty have been taking other precautionary methods.
Philip has an adult son, and might be justified in not wanting any further children.
Kirsty was certainly vociferous about ' babies' but it might have been quite innocent, and not meant to give hints to Philip, just joy at a new baby.

      Delete
  46. Equally, Pierre, you could be right !
Strange that they didn't discuss the issue of children before they lived together, especially as she has no child, is younger than him, lost a baby recently. Most couples would, but, sigh, this is soap land.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Kirsty said that she was now reconciled with her loss and no longer suffered around babies, Philip was glad for her. Being an environmentalist she may have put it behind her. She and Philip can look forward to baby birds.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I would love Kirsty + Phil to have a little'un.
This is Kirsty's last chance, which I think she is becoming to realise. She has always put a very brave face on, after she was so devasted when she had that unfortunate miscarriage.
Mike + Vicky had Bethany when they were older, who they love despite her
Downs. A child would be the making of Kirsty, and she would be able to juggle motherhood with work.
After all, she has her neighbour Joy, as a childminder!!

    2. Baby babies or baby birds. It’s all about endless cooing and more cooing.
I am a bird watcher, so would prefer birds, to 👶.

    3. I am not a bird watcher, but I do protect the fledgeling blackbirds (who nest in my hedge every year) from my pusscat.
Give me baby animals, any day....

  48. I am with those, who think that Brian + Jennifer are lined up to buy Grange Farm, provided that Ed keeps the tenancy of the actual farmland.
Perhaps this is why B+J seem to be sort of happy, staying at Willow Cottage, without actively looking and searching for a new, potential "family" home.
The Grundy's will still have Grundys Field for the Cider Club and cider press in memory of Joe.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It was my understanding that Brian and Jennifer were looking to rent as they hadn't the money to buy.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I have forgotten about their finances, after they sold Home Farm. I remember they had to do so, due to the "clean up" costs which they had to pay for plus Brians fine + court costs.
Can you enlighten me, as I thought they still had some monies left over, to buy rather than rent.
I just can't recall this though.
Any help on this will be gratefully received.

  52. Miriam: 5.57pm, yesterday

I thought Brian and Jennifer were looking for somewhere to buy when they decided to sell Home Farmhouse. They spent ages searching but couldn’t find anywhere suitable.
So they must have had some funds for house purchase, which they presumably still have.

I assumed that renting Mike Tuckers old house was just going to be a temporary thing whilst the owners were away. Then they said they were going to be away for longer so the Aldridges have stayed on. But there hasn’t been any more talk about looking for a permanent home ......perhaps the S/Ws have forgotten and it’s been convenient to have them still in the village?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Good point Archerphile I had forgotten that! Also who purchased Home (?) Farm it seems odd that J & B have not mentioned them, there was secrecy about the buyer at the time but now they are living in the property...

  53. “I need to get to the Fob Detector” was the only sensible comment in last nights silly episode.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Maybe the scriptwriters have been saving the Aldridge’s for Grange Farm, and vice versa, as Miriam suggests. If it was good enough for Oliver and his wife, I guess it’s good enough for them.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Archerphile 8.45am 10/12/19

There is only one fly in the ointment about Brian and Jennifer buying Grange Farm and that is Kate! They were quite happy in downsizing from Home Farm into a three bedroomed semi because it meant that Kate would have to get her own place. Even forcing her out when Ruairi came home from the summer.
We know that Grange Farm has six bedrooms so that would leave plenty of room for Kate to muscle in once again!
Last night driving home from tutoring I actually heard 'Joy' for the first time. Why on earth has yet another new character been introduced? I suppose she will take the role of Lynda when she arrived in Ambridge all those years ago; to stir things up and galvanise the village into action on so many local issues. However as Joy seems not to listen to a word anyone else says but is only content to rabbit on about herself and her family, all I can see is an annoying self-obsessed woman, who for some reason has moved a long way away from her birthplace to the countryside and who may be quite lonely and needs others to be 'friends.'
I do wish the S/Ws would not try to do 'comedy' though. I see what they are doing in lightening the mood of the scripts before BIG drama (ie Joe's death). Obviously someone took notes in the Creative Writing classes! However TA needs better quality 'comedy' writers to succeed with that.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yes, the two hopeless comedy themes: Basil and Joy - she reminds me of Vicky.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Yes Basia, she reminds me of Vicky too, and I didn't like her much.
Spiceycushion may be correct, maybe she is the ' new' Linda, but then Linda has matured into a worthy if often infuriating resident, so it might be a matter of time before we all take to Joy.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I disliked pushy Vicky as well, Mrs P, & agree Joy is similar. Can see the point about Lynda, who isn't as clever as she thinks she is, but still streets ahead of Joy intellectually, & a tad more self aware.
Spicy (11.20am), good point re Kate ! They were aiming to downsize anyway, if I remember, because they're older, & don't have family living with them any more,(& of course don't want Kate to work her way back to freeloading off them again,)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Kirsty and Philip obviously can’t stand Joy so why go back to her when they were locked out? It would have been better to go down to the Bull for a drink or go for a walk in the wonderful Ambridge countryside to fill in the time! They will never have the time to eat let alone go up to the bedroom with the wine!! She will keep them there until midnight wittering on about “the grandkids!”

    ReplyDelete
  60. I think they said they were in their slippers, without money and it was raining. I think it was a last resort.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I was another listener who disliked Vicki - too loud and pushy for my liking and I didn’t like the way she pushed Mike into doing things he didn’t want to - but then, he was pretty besotted with her!

Joy gets on my nerves already. I think the whole village will be very tired of her soon.
Just the sort you want crashing into the village, complaining about normal everyday activities in a farming community, winning everything at the F&P show......and I bet she’ll take over Lynda’s role as Christmas show producer too! Wouldn’t you know she’d have experience of amateur dramatics up on Tyneside, or wherever it was, and I’m sure Rochelle was the perfect Cinderella or Princess Pushy in some pantomime or other!
I’m awfully glad she’s not my neighbour. 😧

    ReplyDelete
  62. The character Joy is like the Flaxenbrothers, ‘full of hot air signifying nothing’. Let’s hope a very Fair, strong wind blows in and carries them off.To languish forever in Joyous never, never land.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Agree about Joy. Another useless one dimensional character. (imo). The sw's don't do humour it seems. (i.e. let's just hit 'em......the Listener) over the head with a character!) Couldn't stand Vicky either. I think it must be something to do with accentuating and bringing out the worst in an accent. (They've done it with Ruth.) Although she has more positive attributes. Of course many will disagree. Just my observations. Now Lynda. As far as I'm concerned, love her or loathe her they have managed to develop and round her character to some extent and as such she is always fun to listen to..........in small doses though!

  64. Why do they have to make Joy into a cartoon character?
I really do not believe that there are women like Joy around.
Joy never pauses for breath and what she was saying ,no sensible or reasonable person would talk about and no sensible or reasonable person would listen to .
    Kirsty and Phil in slippers?
    I doubt it .
Neither of them would have closed the door without checking that the other one had a key.
The whole episode with the three of them was awful.
(I listened to this episode lying in the bath this morning and was countering away at the daft script Not having a bath at home it was a real treat )

    Poor Kirsty.
    She is feeling broody.
She should get rid of Philip.
She should go back to Roy’s place and eventually take up with him.
Philip is no good for her

She will calm down, when she reveals all. This is why she is on living on her own at Beechwood, and her daughter Rochelle has still not been to visit.
There, to me, has to be a story about her life, yet to be revealed.
Just another idle + wacky thought of mine!

I bought myself a new pair of slippers yesterday, ready for cooler times. They will be comfortable and warm.
If Kirsty + Phil like wearing slippers, wants wrong with that.
They have a brand new Beechwood home, so might have a "no outdoor shoes" to be worn inside rule,
to keep it pristine (at least Lexi's waters broke on the rug!)
Many family members of mine, insist on shoes left off at the front door, so it has to be slippers or socks.

  68. TA is getting very silly and I shall stop listening for a few weeks/months. Apart from the attempts at comedy and one truly unbelievable character there are too many instances of volte-face :
    1) Will "game-keeping is my life" - and then giving it up the very next week.
    2) Jennifer seriously despising and suspecting Lexi, only to rush round with a fulsome apology after only a few short sentences from Ian.
