  4. Went out this morning to meet some friends ☕️ for coffee and cake in Ledbury. Had a terrifying journey home, didn’t think we would make it. The roads have flooded so had to take circuitous route taking the car through deep water 💦 and it is still ☔️ raining. Has been since last evening. All this rain is sitting all already sodden fields and many of the roads here are now closed. We have been sent flood alerts although they won’t effect us, it means we are stuck at home, unable to go anywhere.
The downside of living near a major river in a rural area.

    1. Dear Lord stasia! Was just reading more about all the hideous floods in Yorkshire & the snow blocking roads in Wales - feel extremely fortunate that up here we have had nothing but clear blue skies and brilliant sunshine. It's been absolutely freezing, but nothing that some winter woolies doesn't sort out!

  5. Sorry to hear about what is happening with the floods in your neck of the woods,Stasia but
I am pleased that you are not in danger of having to leave your home
It is dreadful to see what people in various parts of the Country are going through.
I feel for those people who not only will have the dreadful task of trying to get their homes back to something like will be in the dreadful position of worrying when it will happen again.
I hope they get plenty of financial support from the Government.

  6. Stasia what a horrible ending to your meet up. Frightening I’m sure and glad you are now safely home. At least you will be able to stay there and not be evacuated 🤞
How long do you think you will be grounded? Always a different ball game when something is forced upon us and our “ freedom” compromised ☹️
Thinking of you - keep safe 🌻

  7. Stasia, I lived in Ledbury before moving to the island and although the town itself didn’t usually suffer from flooding, I well remember the surrounding roads and villages did and it was often impossible to venture forth! One pub we often went to was situated near where the canal, now filled in, had run and their cellar was sometimes flooded. Sorry to hear about your difficult journey but glad you made it safely home!

    ReplyDelete
  8. We had a huge snowfall yesterday which meant having roads closed and a lot of inconvenience getting to work mostly because of the protection services anticipating danger through fallen trees and avalanches.
Minor problems all things considered considering the damage and danger thousands of people are experiencing elsewhere.
Hope you and yours are all safe and sound.

Ps. Gary, you are a gem but that doggy upsets me.

  9. A warning. I had a cold call from a firm called Sanctuary concerning care home costs and how it is possible to finance this, if needed, without having to sell a property. It sounded very genuine BUT it is a SCAM. I did cut them off and on researching, it is flagged up as dangerous.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Talking about dreadful weather conditions, I heard from some friends living in Sydney today.
They say the conditions are awful there with thick orange smog hanging over the city from the huge bush fires getting nearer and nearer. It is very hot and difficult to breath. They said they could do with some of our flood water down there to quell the fires.
What a crazy world we are living in these days!

    ReplyDelete
  11. Indeed, Archerfile! Over the summer we wanted rain and now we are getting far more than we can cope with! I feel so sorry for those so badly affected by floods. I only have to cope with muddy walks with the dogs and trying to stop Buddy from drinking from muddy puddles!

I have decided to give Dudley a second chance and will be calling in a behaviourist highly recommended by our dog minders. He needs to get over his frenzies when people come to the door and also to relate to Gypsy even if he can only ignore her. We have had a difficult week as Katy and I have both had a heavy cold, we had Gyp’s diagnosis and Dudley biting her was the last straw. Last night she refused her DINNER! Unheard of and we thought this was the beginning of the end but this morning she polished off her breakfast so we are very happy!😊

  12. Thanks everyone.
Ev. We met at the Feathers which has opened a very posh coffee house. Plush sofas, compfy arm chairs and good coffee and cake. Shall go there again, when it’s not raining.

Miriam. I have heard of a company called Sanctuary Care, but thought they had gone bankrupt. My view is never take seriously any cold calls. Unfortunately when one gets to a certain age 60 yrs seems to a point when retirement/medical companies start Cold calling and sending out Unsolicited material. Around here retirement ‘villages’ are popping up everywhere.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In our day we tended to frequent other pubs which were more comfortable, less shabby and cheaper! I’m glad to hear the Feathers has updated though as it is a lovely and prominent building in the town. We found towards the end of our time there that the town was fitted up more for tourists with multiple coffee shops, posh frock shops and gift shops and trying to get everyday things like socks and knickers was impossible. You needed to travel to Hereford or Worcester both well over 10 miles away. I have found a big difference here with a 10 minute interval bus service to Ryde and Newport both about 3 miles away and having a well stocked little Tesco 2 minutes walk away. We do have a posh frock shop in the village and a small coffee shop which is run by volunteers and ploughs profits back into the village. We also have a rather nice charity shop run for the hospice on the island. Also unlike Herefordshire we are near the sea!😁🦀🐟🌊🌊

  15. Re. Miriam's comment about cold callers I had one recently that caused me great worry. I was in bed and then my mobile rang. I answered it half asleep ( only family and friends are supposed to have the number) and it was a very plausible woman telling me my car had been involved in an accident. I panicked because my daughter had borrowed my car for the evening, and fortunately my first thought was to contact my son for help rather than giving details to this woman. He thought it would be a scam, but it didn't stop us deluging my daughter with texts, and we didn't get a reply for a while until she was back in signal. Since then several others in this area have had similar calls, and I think it is a very mean thing to do.

    1. I've had one of those, Janice, but I'm afraid that in my case it only sparked amusement. I do not drive, have never been behind the wheel of a car in my life (the very idea frightens me silly) and therefore have never owned one.

  16. I have had several of those cold calls about having been in an accident, despite my last (minor) bump having been 8+ years ago. The callers are very persistent when I say I haven't been in an accident.
I have worried about the the possible effect on people in some situations, like

  17. I'm horrified by your cold call, Janice., & sorry you had such a frightening experience. It was so irresponsible; how can it be stopped at source ? These scammers know nothing about the people they target, & care even less about how such a lie might affect them.

    ReplyDelete
  18. To add, I didn't take the cold call seriously, but was just intrigued. I posted it, purely as a warning for those with older friends + family, as it sounded so genuine.
Also on asking where they got my home phone number from, the answer was the Home Owners directory (not sure if there is one). They seemed to know that I am over 60 and a home-owner, not just living in rented accomodation. That is worrying in itself, as my personal details, have obviously been accessed, somehow.

    1. Miriam. Many organisations pass on and sell information about us to others. The most high profile case was Facebook selling information about their users to the now disgraced Cambridge Analytica. This resulted in interference in American elections and our own elections. Information is collected about us all the time, ever time you use a card for payment, or complete documentation, once it goes into a computer it is collated.

  20. There is to be a programme on Channel 5 one evening next week covering the subject of Cold Calls. Worth a watch - as I have said before we have a BT nuisance Blocker house phone so we are not troubled with them now. Although I mostly use my iphone anyway and so far that has escaped them, when I had my really old analogue phone I did get some.

    1. Lanjan1.09pm. It was the first item. They were saying that 65,000 people were scammed in the first six months of this year. They were discussing how banks might reimburse the money to the customer and the process for doing so. Currently if you have been scammed it is virtually impossible to get your money back.
It’s amazing that people are still falling for those old tricks.

  25. I have had my account corrupted twice. Many years ago I bought ⛽️ petroleum at a garage in Birmingham and used my card. Some time later the bank phoned and asked if I had been to a certain Indian Restaurant and spent £700. I replied no, plus and another one spending £800. Again I responded No, that I would have had to had to eaten a lot of curry to spend that amount. My card had been cloned when I bought the petrol. The other time was in Norway and the bank asked if I had been in South Korea. The bank did not pay out any monies.
The inconvenience to me was that I had to cut up my cards and wait for new ones. But the positive is my bank will notice any changes in how I use my account.

  29. We had a sunny day here and managed to clear my raised veg plot in preparation for planting broad beans, We took the dogs to Quarr Abbey, we had coffee and cake and they had black pudding dog biscuits! It was much warmer than yesterday and we had a very pleasant walk through the woods there. We met a family with children and they asked whether they could stroke the dogs. Dudley is fine with little ones which is one mercy! He has directed a few barks at Gyp this week but yesterday she butted him out of the way so he is a bit more wary! I am tackling the barking every time a car goes by as I tell him to be quiet and then praise him when he is! A lot of patience required which I’m not generally good at!

  30. I agree with LanJan on the other blog that it is a good idea to mix age groups in housing. A good few years ago when we were looking for a house in Ledbury we went to see a bungalow and everywhere you looked little grey heads were bobbing around. In my early fifties I wasjust not ready for this! I like the company of people of my own age group but find it very wearing when they go on about their ailments and what pills they are on incessantly and when they saw the doctor last Friday or was it Thursday , although in this blog it has been good to share experiences of health problems but we do discuss other things!

  31. A day in the life: worked in the morning, a successful and satisfying service, although as is often the case these days, I was really too tired to play in the first place. Slept in the afternoon, still too tired to cook, so enjoyed sausages and beans on toast, followed by nectarines and yogurt. Early night! Today I shall be back to enjoying the sunshine, although nothing strenuous in the garden. Solicitor coming to talk about dealing with Mr S's investments, as results of my enquiries so far have suggested that if I try to deal with them on my own I'm likely to be taken for some very expensive rides!

    2. Thank you, Lady R. As Mr S had been in hospital more or less continuously since March he had been absent from the house for months before he died, so that is a useful reminder as it seems much longer than that. As 4 of my recent 7 operations took place in the last 5 years I'm quite low on energy anyway, and am inclined to underestimate how much of it activities like gardening use up.

There was almost too much excitement last week, with new furnishings arriving to replace worn out items which Mr S had refused to part with. I'm taking it easy today, browsing through my new Gardener's World magazine and enjoying the autumn light.

  32. The town is still flooded in many streets, and so is Tewkesbury so Working on the allotment is out. The ground is squelchy Making it impossible to work the soil Which is heavy with water. The river Severn is still rising from rain coming down from Wales.
The place where I live is classified as a large village, but for Some reason calls itself a town. In the nineteenth century it was a port on the Severn, since then it has dwindled and has become a tourist spot. It’s up the Main St and down the same street. Pretty in the summer dull and boring in the winter.
Lots of police in the town, a young woman’s body was found near flooded water and a man has been arrested for murder. That has caused a bit of a story for the locals.

I have said I will pass on any comments she may have but I appreciate£ it isn’t the same.

All I know is that I went via chrome and used to go through google.
How I ever managed to get onto to this site in the first place beats me.
How much easier it must be for youngsters who have grown up with technology rather than someone like me who only “embraced” it in her 70s ,learning processes by trial and error.
It is a bit like trying to understand percentages without knowing what decimals and fractions are.

  42. Lanjan, how well said your last comment ! I shall always think of my technological gaps/dumbness like that now, trying to understand % without having learnt decimals & fractions ! ( Still hazy on the decimal point - you'd be disgusted)
I do hope Mrs P gets someone to help her soon, in a way that works not just in the moment, but gives enough understanding to protect against any future blips. As I said before, an assistant in a computer shop would be able to help, even though it's their job to try selling her an update at the same time ! Not, however, impossible to deflect that with, 'I'll think about that'....& leave...

  49. Hurrah here you are Mrs P 🤗
Understand the news Apple gave you - in Sept ‘18 I renewed my iPad 2 (as too old and incredibly slow) to a sixth generation model. The year before I had had a big birthday but as Mr R in hospital and then recovery just before it a year later he insisted I renew the iPad and change my analogue Samsung mobile for an Apple phone. (Some cash off as a nearby shop had an offer on the phone) as a rule we don’t do gifts just buy something if we need or want it at the time. So a treat of a lifetime, in your case I fully understand the numbers you need to crunch though and 🤞 for you.

  50. Yay! Welcome back MrsP. Regarding updating your iPad there are shops and on-line retailers that do reconditioned tech, I replaced my iPhone with MusicMagpie, they have a 12month guarantee, and they do a range from oldish to very recent kit, my current phone is no more than 18 months old so should stay functional for a while, my old phone was OK but the battery life was diminishing and died after jumping into the toilet (oops!!)
