  1. Strange little retro style map this time...

  2. The scene at Grey Gables was excruciating with Tracy as the village idiot.
David's instinct is right, Pip's going to sign a dodgy deal but he was kind enough to congratulate.

    2. Very good point Spicy. David made it sound as if she was doing him a favour - by doing what she is paid for !

  3. Pip just rubs me up the wrong way entirely I'm afraid!

  4. Yes, but..... Spiceycushion - David was just being a nice man and a nice dad. And simply saying thanks.

Carolyn in your summing up of Helen you forgot the special vibe ........ Supercilious !
As Seasider so perfectly defined Helen's character.

  6. Pip - "I want a farm." Gets it. "I want your 500k." Gets it. "I want your land." Gets it. "I want everybody to change THEIR lives 'coz I want this baby." They do. She wants, she gets....

All hail Ambridge's Queen of Entitlement!!!

    1. Sounds uncannily similar to Helen, doesn't it : ' I want a baby', gets it; 'I want free accommodation', gets it, 'I want that married man', gets him, ' whoops, that went pear shaped but now I want the one who has started to date someone else', gets him, 'I wanted someone else to take my boy to karate', Emma takes him. Emma is having lots of grief, does Helen offer any support ? You must be joking.

    2. Sounds remarkably like Johnny too - I want to live In Ambridge, gets it, I want to shack up with Uncle Tom, gets it, I want a job at Bridge Farm, gets it, I want free accommodation at Bridge Farm gets it, I want an even better job there, gets it, I want Josh’s ex-girlfriend etc. One thing Pip, Helen and Johnny have in common is that they are all mighty hard workers and certainly earn the rent free accommodation that goes with the job.

    3. Mmn...fail to see any similarity between Johnny & those two women. ! He gives value added, do they ? Must have missed something.

      Delete
    4. Actually, you can apply the ‘gets it’ formula to almost any young or middle-aged member of the Archer clan - but where would be the fun or informational value of the Ambridge parallel universe if no one ever got what they wanted? The difference between Johnny and the two.women is that they are more independent and go ahead in their thinking eg. setting up the cheese business, the milking parlour. They are proactive, Johnny is reactive.

  7. I find the fact that Helen & Kirsty seemingly fail to exist outwith whatever relationships they are having to be rather troubling - I can't really remember the last time either of them having a conversation that didn't mention "their" men! Would they pass the Bechdel test? I doubt it...

    ReplyDelete
  8. Well, ''twas ever thus !
Christine wanted horses and got them.
Phill wanted the farm and got it.
Jack wanted the pub and got that too.
Phil and Christine were grafters and made successful businesses and were able to pass those businesses on along the family line.
Jack was a wastrel but had a canny East Ender wife.
The two daughters of that union made their own way in life, Tony has grafted for ever and still is, albeit as a hobby.

And on and on and on.......

    It's called 'The Archers '

  10. There is a 9 minute episode of the noises of Jill making mince pies. Someone is helping her and she’s talking to them about making mince pies.
The episode was there in my “my sounds” list in the sounds app. It was available from yesterday.

  11. On Sunday (I think) Clarrie came home from work to find the boys’ attempts to make mince pies and gingerbread men for Grundy World. She was about to show them how to do it properly but they engineered their escape. Luckily Emma called and lent a hand, and they rebonded over the jelly buttons.

  15. .Hey up Maryellen9:38 pm yesterday the 10th
What is all this about Johnny?
Johnny is Pat and Tony’s grandson.
    Pat went searching for him.
He didn’t make the first move
We don’t know whether he pays rent to Pat and Tony but even if he isn’t ,I bet a lot of children aren’t either, like Helen
He is a very hard worker as you say and is certainly worth whatever he is being paid.
What have you got against him?
He is one of the kindest ,most genuine blokes in Ambridge.
He may not be a leader but I would like to have him in my corner
He would be the first Ambridge resident I would pick for my side.

Was Bella formerly going out with Josh?
    I don’t remember that.

    2. LanJan - I was pointing out parallels between Johnny’s situation and Helen an dPips, and indeed most of the Archer cal present and (as Mrs P pointed out) past. The Archers are on the whole hard workers, and get what they want. It was Josh who reminded us he was with Bella before Johnny was, when talking to Ruth.

Johnnie is a most mature, kind and hard working young man.

    1. I think you are right about Josh lusting, he doesn’t have an emotional bone in his avaricious body. Jonny is kind and hard working, or is worked hard? But he is not mature, not yet.

  22. It seems that Bella dumped Johnny because he was getting too mature for her unlike the lighthearted Josh, who effectively said: but I liked her first, just like Rex who liked Pip but Toby got in there first, a lot of "joshing" going on in Ambridge.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I reckon Johnny is quite mature & it was a wonderful thing for him & them, when he was 'discovered', got on so well with his dead father's family, & found his metier, in farming. He had a good family with mum & stepdad, but was a bit lost as a 16-17yr. old, not an academic achiever, with severe dyslexia, unsure how to proceed. Tony encouraged him to go to agricultural college, & he thrived. I suppose he's 20 now, like the twins, maybe 21, but more together & purposeful than either of them.
    His SL is very positive.

  24. A lot of angst tonight, Hannah and Neil, David and Kenton and finally Jim and Robert.
He just needed mummy to cuddle him and I certainly didn't appreciate being inside his and Lynda's bedroom. Why have they turned him into such a sissy.

  25. Hannah to be sacked tomorrow? Does she REALLY think that's how you speak to your boss? Wow....

    ReplyDelete
  26. Hi Gary. She should have been sacked immediately. Tomorrow is too lenient for her.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hang on, chaps! We don’t yet know what caused the tail-breaking, and if it was down to something Hannah did or didn’t do, did it constitute a sackable offence, espionage set against her previous good record.

      Delete
  27. If any of my employees had ever spoken to me the way that Hannah spoke to Neil this evening (or indeed on several other occasions) I would have made sure that they lost their job. I am not a man who looks for confrontation but I would never let someone with such a bad attitude and sense of embitterment talk to me like that. I also believe that Neil is not handling her behaviour correctly - he IS partly to blame for the situation.

Nonetheless, I would have sacked her in a New York minute! People like Hannah are 10 a penny & as replaceable as one of the pigs....😏😉

    ReplyDelete
  28. Exactly,Gary.
    My thoughts entirely.
    Dreadful woman.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Very much agree,. Unfortunately, Neil is out of his depth with this woman, I doubt he's ever come across anyone like her before.
She certainly wouldn't talk to JE like that, would she? All polite & (apparent, but probably spurious) efficiency there, more to gain from him, whereas Neil is easy to flummox & expendable - she intends to 'expend'with him !

      Delete
  29. The scripts have livened up very noticeably these last few days, not so humdrum & predictable, making for better entertainment, but not sure how successful it is yet.
We've seen a harder edge to Johnny, trying to combat his heartbreak, Helen actually managing to tell Lee her story ( some of it, but I bet not all...), Whole hearted warmth between Emma & Clarrie, away with the tentative overtures, Will & Ed acting like brothers at last...on it goes.
Neil & Hannah, true to form though - the honest pigman versus vicious harpy, & JE playing his devious cards close to his chest.
Not sure where I'm going with this, but definitely a different feeling about TA.

    ReplyDelete
  30. carolyn, I think we can ALL agree that there is nothing worse than a broken Johnny....😉

    ReplyDelete
  31. I suppose the rise of Hannah, the way she speaks to Neil, and differently to Justin, her attitude, particularly as she formerly worked in the States, may well be a long way round by the SWs, of illustrating how an older worker, with a lifetimes experience and an excellent work ethic, can be pushed out of the workforce by a younger thrusting colleague who values their own progress above any ethical way of behaviour towards others.

Apologies for a rather long sentence.

    ReplyDelete
  32. She was so aggressive in telling Neil not to blame her that my suspicion is that she is to blame. She is very unpleasant but adds to the spice!

I simply cannot believe that he could be so discombobulated by listening to Jim telling a ghost story in a darkened room.
And then , the bedroom scene with Lynda! Now we know they have separate beds but really, too much information, too much information folks!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I know I'm a bit out of step here, but I don't have such a down on Hannah. She's competent and forthright, but has a boss who, through promotion, had reached his level of incompetence.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I am in total agreement with Ex-Londoner. Hannah is not nearly as black as listeners are painting her. In no organisation I have worked for would Her outburst have got her sacked, not even a disciplinary hearing, a word from the boss at most (similar to Oliver faced with Tracy’s far more unprofessional behaviour at Grey Gables). And what does Neil have to report to Justin about her outburst (if he does? Did she swear at him, use defamatory language? She was vehement but not abusive and more concerned with defending herself than attacking him.

Found the bedroom scene amusing, too.

  37. Ex Londoner (11.51pm), not entirely convinced of Hannah's competence. I realise being rude & obnoxious doesn't rule out being good at the job, but suspect there's more talk than substance with that one. We'll see ! Quite a well developed SL, keeping listeners guessing & 'taking sides', of course.

  41. I have a suggestion for Lynda and Robert. At their age they are no longer very agile, so why not keep the beds in close proximity for undisturbed sleep, but easily pushed together. Otherwise the magic moment may pass or they could sustain an injury.

    ReplyDelete
  42. It wasn’t so much what Hannah said but the aggressive way she said it. Not the first time when you think of how she spoke to Emma being convinced she had jumped the housing queue. What a cheek to think a recent incomer without children should be ahead of a family who have lived there all their lives. Anyone who excuses her behaviour is condoning it!

It took a bit of time but you now realise what a nasty piece of work Hannah is.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Well done Justin😁. Hannah’s now on the receiving end of a docking tongue 👅 leaving her pigtail-less. Neil managed to “grow a pair” (Lynda 11.12.19) and is now wagging his tail, keep it up and hopefully Hannah will take her pig ignorant 🤬 attitude back to the US.

    ReplyDelete
  55. It seems Neil is in the wrong in one way or another: if he is right about the feed diagnosis, he was wrong to sanction the change, and if he is wrong about the feed diagnosis, then sanctioning the change was okay, but getting the diagnosis wrong puts his experience in question. Justin will be reluctant to admit he was unwise to appoint Neil (for the same devious reasons he is backing the rewilding project). Hannah, of course, was Neil’s appointment, so any mistake there is down to Neil. I think Justin recognises her ability and wouldn’t want to lose her.

    ReplyDelete
  56. If I remember correctly Maryellen, Niel was overruled by Justin over the feed, I think Justin was taken in by Hannahs pushing profit. , The US where Hannah was working previously is known for its inferior standards, Justin is perhaps begining to realise The true worth of Niel.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Not with you Basia.
    Why do you feel cheated?
I thought Tony had owned up.

    ReplyDelete
  63. No Lanjan, he didn't tell the whole truth, as to where he'd been, taking pity on a needy woman.
Like a cheating husband he'd be forcing down another dinner. I feel cheated out of a nice occasion. There was only needy Helen with her new lover. It's so typical though of the Archers, at countless times they spoilt it. All I can think of was when Tony befriended a Fergie enthusiast and indirectly it led to John's death. It's still not too late to tell Pat what happened because otherwise she'll find out from the woman on a scrounge.

    ReplyDelete
  64. Tony owned up that he had forgotten their anniversary after admitting it was 44 years. Pat corrected him, 45 years.

Tony did not own up that he had been with ' whatsaname ' or that he had already eaten a beef casserole ( aren't the Bridge Farm lot all vegetarians? ) and he agreed when Pat supposed that he had been at the garage with other motor heads.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Oh I don’t think that is so bad .
I think Tony did the right thing.
He was being kind to Joy ,nothing happened and why upset Pat ?
Loads of men forget their Anniversaries.
    Some forget their wives’ birthdays.
Of course when Joy mentions to Pat how kind Tony was ...........
    Now that might be different.
I think he could come clean about what happened - in the near future but not necessarily this evening.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Well I hope he does LJ, because that is a marriage I would not wish to be put asunder.
In the last year I know of three, gone forty five year marriages, gone under because the seventy odd man couldn't keep it in his pants.
I would not want to see Tony Archer go the way of his sister Lilian.

    ReplyDelete
  67. No way ,Mrs P..
    He was just being kind.

    ReplyDelete
  68. I think it was simply silly that he didn't tell Pat about Joy, & share Basia's irritation at this hackneyed, forced, dramatic cliche !
All very sweet with Helen & Lee & he did do the decent thing, confessing to the other girl immediately.
Only caught up with last night early this evening. Thank goodness Neil spoke up & Justin took his point & rumbled Hannah ! About time. Nose severely out of joint, but unless she flounces out of Ambridge altogether, which I think is unlikely somehow, too much mileage in this one, she'll have to at least give the impression of toeing the line, whatever covert plots she might hatch.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Well you’ve dropped yourself right in it now Tony. Joy will tell Pat once agin how lucky she is to have such a wonderful and kind husband and how much he enjoyed her casserole, and then 2+2 will equal 5 in Pat’s mind.
How long this time Helen before complications start (or are we going to have a wedding this time?)

    ReplyDelete
  70. No way.
Pat is too sensible to believe that

    ReplyDelete
  71. I expect Joy will offer to give Pat her recipe for Beef Casserole ‘because Tony enjoyed it so much’.
That’s when the cat will come out of the bag. 😂

  72. One things for sure if you live in Ambridge and you’re in you’re late 60’s, 70’s, 80’s or evening 90’s (Joe) then you will be up for much flirting - at the very least ❤️ 🤗

  73. I'm firmly with MrsP on this one, if they do anything to this marriage they can go to hell. Ruth didn't leave David because there was a tremendous protest. Is this the way to attract a younger audience? Just as well Colin Skipp left in both ways before all this. Tony knew there was food waiting for him at the house and she said herself that they must be waiting for him.
How about Tony takes Sorrow to buy a present for Pat and they are seen together.
That remark by Kate/Alice that Tony put a spring in her step because Peggy made him apologise for nothing - it was all fabricated and pointless.

    ReplyDelete
  74. What a depressing end to an Archers week.
I was hoping to hear Peggy listening in to the unpleasant exchanges from Justin towards Davids objections to his shenanigans, and intervene.

    Another new writer I think.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I think she'll get to hear about it, Mrs P, through Pheobe, & probably withdraw the prize money !
Dramatic intervention from David - great stuff.
How dare Pip turn on Pheobe, when all three of them had a clear responsibility to check the (dodgy) BL deal ? I'm not exonerating Pheobe, she obviously should have shared what her grandfather told her, was dishonest not do do so, but they are supposed to be a team & it is extraordinary that the older members just went by what the young untried enthusiast said.

  76. Agree Carolyn, but it's been a good example of how casual all three have been about their project. Lessons on team building required !
Hoped that P would intervene and withdraw prize money, and she probably will, thus extending this SL with Justin losing his rag and Lillian mollifying him.
They could keep the SL going up to Easter possibly.

  77. Three very naive youngsters adrift in the world of big business! They were like sheep being fleeced by wolves, with Justin being the biggest wolf of all,
But I think Peggy can get the better of him when she finds out what has happened - as she surely will. At least, I sincerely hope so.

Pity a university education doesn’t necessarily teach you to live in the real word, eh Phoebe?

  78. Why on earth did Tony feel the need to lie about where he'd been. Obviously Pat will find out where he was and that he'd already been fed. Tony is an older man and Joy does sound desperate and he may begin to feel flattered by her attentions but I really hope not.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Joy is very needy and Tony is basically a kind man but I got the impression he was just responding to her distress rather than wanting to be with her. He also was drawn to the beef casserole which would have smelled so good! He must see that his dalliance with her would look more than it was so needs to cover it up! Hopefully if Pat finds out she will trust him enough not to be unduly worried. I hope!

  80. I'm still angry and upset about Tony and last night was just a farce. As MrsP says Peggy will probably intervene, it's *her* storyline after all.

  81. Three go up S.... creek without a paddle..
What a bunch of dunderheads. Phoebe B A Oxon.
How did she achieve that when she is clearly as thick as two short planks.
Maybe it was a first class honours in sneakology.
The two older plonkers should have known that a lawyer would have spotted Justin’s little tricks. They will certainly need a lawyer to help extract them from the mess that was getting rewilding done in Ambridge.
I enjoyed last nights episode. Good bit of drama, for a change.

    1. Agree with last 2 sentences, Stasia, wrote as much last night, & also blame Rex & Pip as much as Pheobe.
However, imo, the Oxford degree is a red herring. Universities do a particular work with undergraduates, which doesn't include, per see, making them honest, loyal, unselfish. Early adulthood is a hugely volatile time of life, & Pheobe developed a thing about this rewilding project & wasn't to be stopped ! Yes, she has, supposedly, learnt to 'think for herself' but that's not the same as wisdom or common sense, both of which come from experience, if at all, not from intellectual ability or advanced knowledge in a particular subject area.
As for the other two, they were just reprehensively lazy.

  82. I wonder what the scriptwriters have up their sleeves for us next week, in the lead up to Christmas.

I hope for Peggy to find out about Justin’s double-barrelled dealing over the rewilding scheme and to intervene - probably with the help of her scheme administrator, Lilian
For Tony to tell Pat the whole truth about their anniversary night and for her to understand.
For Lynda to butt out of interfering with Jim’s ghost stories (a faint hope, I think)
For Hannah to decide to go back to the US and farm pigs there
And for a bit more cheer and happiness all round. Especially for Johnnie

  83. I really struggle to understand why the three idiots didn’t get some legal advice about the contract, especially when dealing with someone they know to be a pretty sharp dealer, after all Justin has been around for some time.

  84. I know there is such a thing as a "cooling off period" where parties can change their mind after they've signed.
There are restrictions though and I don't know if it would apply in this case.
It might be their only chance to get out, although they really don't deserve to.

  85. Carolyn 10.22 am.
I agree that a degree from anywhere, even Oxford, doesn’t make anyone honest, but it does and should encourage the skill of analytical 🤔 thinking. Phoebe should have been able to problem solve by taking a methodical approach to breaking down the complex problems that would arise from such an ambitious scheme. With a degree in PPE she would have the skill to extract comprehensive data and identify those solutions that would deal with any possible obstacles.
She brought the other two into “her” project, and I can understand involving Pip, she at least has farming knowledge. But what was the purpose and role of having Rex included, unless he was expected to be the donkey?
Phoebe obviously saw her role as Project Manager, thereby giving her ownership of the scheme.

    1. Yes Phoebe was on the verge of telling of her doubts but chickened out when Pip chimed in. She should still have insisted on telling what she had heard in the interests of honesty if not common sense. Hopefully Peggy will be able to step in and 'save' those silly young people.

  87. I cannot understand why Pat needs to be told about what happened or didn’t happen on their Anniversary.
Tony wasn’t the first person to forget his Anniversary and he won’t be the last.
However this is “The Archers” and of course Joy will mention it to Pat .
In “real life” Pat would believe what Tony will tell her about his visit to Joy’s
    but this isn’t real life.......
I really hope the SW don’t go on with this .
    .......but they will.

    1. Because it would be better for Tony to tell Pat the truth about staying with a distressed Joy and eating her casserole than for Pat to hear on the grapevine, or from Joy herself. That would make her wonder why Tony had hidden the facts and make her start suspecting him - totally unnecessarily.

    2. Tony concealed the truth from Pat and it'll come back to haunt him.

  88. Stasia (4.12pm), I agree in theory with all you say, & it is odd, given her PPE degree ( nothing arty farty about that!), she didn't scrutinize the deal - for heaven's sake, she knows better than the other 2, surely, how to scrutinize the clauses & spot the flaws waiting to trip them up & make them slaves to BL.However, immaturity, & passion for the cause, got in the way of her honed analytical skills ! She was not cool & objective. Learning & knowledge beaten by character & emotion, in the face of a real life situation as opposed to learning in the lecture hall, seminar & private study.

  89. Sorry Archerphile, I disagree.
Why make a mountain out of a molehill?
Will Pat think that Tony “doth protest too much” and make more of it than she should?
If Tony does mention it ,the script writers will be clutching at straws if they continue with this storyline.
Why should Tony cross bridges when he doesn’t need to?
He has nothing to confess to.
Who else but Joy will say anything to Pat ?
If Joy mentions it ,Pat will think that Tony was just being kind to a lonely woman and will think no more about it.
However we are talking not about real life ,

  90. Having listened to the ruthless, uncaring, triumphant JE after the signing of his dodgy contract I find it reflected in the way some so called powerful people can control our destiny. Too late maybe but possibly a good lawyer could find a loophole in the contract to checkmate JE and co. The naivety of Phoebe in going it alone is breathtaking and the improbability of these three winning the contest has even more emphasis!

  95. I was reminded elsewhere that Peggy’s money is a charitable trust. Charities are not allowed to make profits so Justin would not be allowed to cream off 70% of any money made on the rewilded land.
Seems to me that Peggy needs to get her lawyers to check this agreement between Justin and the three unwise monkeys thoroughly.

    1. I don’t understand Archerphile - Justin, ie. Borchester Land, and the Trust are two separate enterprises and the rewilders are a third one. The Trust is a non-profit making body.

    2. No, I don’t really understand either Maryellen.
I think it is something to do with the fact that Peggy’s money has been
0awarded to set up the rewilding scheme to benefit the village. But with BL’s input demanding 70% of any profits *instead of them being re-invested in the scheme* it has become (partially) a business, rather than wholly a charity endeavour.
This is not my area of expertise, so I may be totally wrong, but I think that any money made during the rewilding is supposed to be ploughed back into the scheme (sorry!) rather than into BLs pockets.

  101. I think the S/Ws have deliberately developed Lee to be the opposite of Rob.
But that approach has created imo, an image of a wimpy wet afternoon character.
When what they intend is to portray him as caring and kind and gentle, even though he is a karate expert.
Rob deep masculine middle class voice, Lee squeaky no class voice.
I have worked with physiotherapists and it takes four years to complete a degree and then further training and supervision. We are being given the impression that he is less educated than Helen and less sophisticated.
Did they actually seek out a physio and find out what it is they actually do?

  104. And what about Lillian marching in like a stormtrooper. I had completely forgotten that she was the administrator for Peggy. Where has she been for the past month.?

  105. Am one who is liking Helen, sounding happy again with Lee.
It's about time she had a loving relationaship (after Rob) and he sounds just the person. He went shopping with her, surely so to spend time together, in a relaxed way. Slowly and Surely, and why not?

As to The Three.... bet the contract they signed is legally binding, with no escape clause.
Will Peggy pass the money over?
