Life in Ambridge in 1958

  1. Have a listen - it's bizarre beyond belief!

  2. Oh Brilliant Gary - such memories!
To hear Walter Gabriel, Mrs P and Ned Larkin again is such a treat. I also had great fun trying to identify all the cast in the photos

  3. Going back to last night’s episode, I am worried that Ben might be in danger, borrowing Josh’s car to go into town. Supposing the ‘bad guys’ behind the machinery thefts recognise it and deliberately try to damage it, or attack Ben, thinking he is Josh.
Sounds a bit risky to me.
Oh dear, I’m seeing potential danger in every scene these days.....not a comfortable way to listen - and so very different to the episode recorded above!

    1. Totally agree Archerphile - and Gary you have come up trumps yet again 👏🏻
Bizarre is certainly the right word!
Send to Linda then she can recreate such a night at The “B” (Bull of course) and that should certainly keep future custom away 😉 😂
The last female singing voice though did remind me of my dear mum 🎼 those high notes! Always sang for enjoyment.

  4. Gary. That was an excruciating. But thank you anyhow for sourcing it for our delectation.
Did I hear Jill’s voice in that melee of disturbance. Give me the modern day Archers, at least they don’t subject our ears to terrible folksy singing. Steeleye Span do it better and I love Maddy Prior’s voice. Interesting though the style and content of entertainment in the past, and some listeners long for those ‘good old days’.

  5. Worth remembering that many of the original cast were amateurs. According to my Archers' book Gwen Berryman ran a draper's shop and I think Bob Arnold was country/folk singer but am not sure whether full time.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Gwen Berryman went to the same school as my mum did in Wolverhampton apparently (St Jude’s)
Not a lot of people know that- or care!

    1. Good grief. I couldn't understand a single word of Walter. 'Golden age' indeed...Where was the agricultural content that was it's raison d'etre??
Some of today's cast are sound-alikes, but at least I can follow them. Listening to this makes me wonder how on earth the programme has survived so long, and why so many of my acquaintences shudder at the mention of it.

      Delete
    2. Not much agricultural content in that clip Mistral because it was set in the Bull where they were having a whale of a time. The agriculture content was usually given in conversations between farmers outside a pig-style or looking over a gate into a field.
Dan, contemplating MAFF’s latest advice on feeding pigs, or Phil discussing the Ministry’s requirement for sowing more wheat and less mangle-worzles! All fascinating stuff for we country dwellers!

      Delete
  8. At least the clip didn’t feature Uncle Tom singing ‘The Village Pump’, but I think it was him singing the first song.
How did it feel hearing your namesake again, Mrs P? She had such a recognisable voice and I loved re-hearing the true country accent of Ned Larkin.
They don’t do it like that nowadays!

    ReplyDelete
  9. Loved it Gary, especially hearing Walter again - memories of childhood, although I don’t go quite that far back. Thanks Spicy as well - really interesting.

Well done to those who predicted Kate wasn’t pregnant. I think I would like to see Jacob stay with her - she strangely brings out the best in him.

  10. it was like a horribly extended audio clip from "The Good Old Days"!

  11. Yes it was good to hear that very recognisable Mrs P but hearing Ned was the best.
I loved him and his voice so very much.

  12. What a find, Gary ! Very jolly, I suppose. Did giggle at some of those very '50s female voices, oh, & 'Phil's' too, though it was recorded in the 60s.

  15. What a find by Gary G, who is a true 🌟
He is allowing us to continue to share our very many, and differing thoughts + ideas.

I have listened to the above, and sadly, I laughed 😀
It was not what I imagined, but then, this was an episode related to The Bull, which is topical to TA today.
    So spot on GG.

I started listening to TA in the mid '80's. It was interesting to hear about characters, I know about, eg Walter G. Robert Tregorran, and Chris + Peggy, were actually there, both then + now.

  17. I have tried not to make derogatory comments about Kate, but I can’t help Myself. At least, for the time being, also I don’t have to contact social services.
Earth Mother is not pregnant, Hurrahs in galore. I clapped when I heard the results.
Despite being a qualified Vet Jacob is not the brightest tool in the box. Doesn’t he know that Kate already has three children and after the first year or so she promptly forgets they exist.
This phantom child has escaped a future of therapeutic mumbo jumbo and robotic Dalek conversation.
I’m a fan of the hippy, hoppy feckless Kate but making her pregnant was too much to contemplate.

  18. Lady R. That programme sounds like the show I went to at MALVERN on our behalf, when we were petitioning the BBC to retain the blog.
F Finch was very nice when I approached her and she took some details, but told me that the actors didn’t have a say. She was happy to have a conversation but he just stood in the background saying nothing.
I like her no airs and graces.

  20. There has already been a flood in Ambridge, but could there be another?
Probably not, (due to recordings done 6 weeks earlier) but I would like to hear an insert, as to the river Am levels.
Isn't Bortcheshire actually Wiltshire, where floods are so worrying?
    It would be topical

  22. What's the betting, that Ruby is the next, to have to visit the vet?
Crisps, are surely not an ideal snack.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What a total pain Lilian is these days. Shula was being sensible, Jakob knows what he's talking about, but ignorant Lil has to be shirty & petulant, & is one of those ghastly people ( like her mother with the cat) who overfeed their animals, injuring their health, shortening their lives, just because mumsy likes to see her furry or neighing darlings enjoy the 'treats'.

Poor Ed, if only he could secure a decent job, get back some confidence, & reclaim the lovely Emma ! She's still smarting at being dumped by him ('binned' as I think she said to Tracy the other day), so it won't be easy, though we know why he did it. I'm not sure Emma actually does understand, as she's still mourning the collapse of her Beechwood dream.

Above all, she needs to be saved from smarmy Gav ! ' 'Dreadful man', as Lanjan would say.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I totally agree about Lilian.
I really don’t know how much longer I can bear to listen to the ghastly woman with her coarse voice, and musical hall dirty laugh.
She is having far too much input into episodes recently.
I might even check the cast list to see when she’s on and avoid listening that day!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Ridiculous idea that Lilian would behave as she is; about keeping her horse fit and healthy. Lilian has had horses all her life, was married to a Master of the Hunt and is now in possession of two extremely valuable horses. To be questioning the wisdom of Shula and an equine specilist vet is yet another character change to suit a plot. This is getting really tiresome!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Likewise ! I was just struck by how stupidly obstinate Lil was beng, but, as you point out, Spicy, she would, in fact, know better, so her behaviour isn't remotely convincing either.

      Delete
  26. Thank you Gary. How dated that sounded but they were certainly having fun.
Poor Ed. I felt for him seeing Emma with Gavin. Let's hope that a romance doesn't happen.
Lilian is ridiculous and so full of herself when Shula was just reasonably suggesting that Jakob was right.
I'm relieved that Kate is not, after all, pregnant. She's irritating enough now, goodness knows what she'd be like as a mother. Her past track record does not speak highly of her maternal skills.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lilian has always been a horse woman so why the ridiculous SL about her not being aware of her (their) horses weight? Extending it seems to her dog!

Hopefully Emma’s experience with Gavin going forward will remind her what a good hearted husband Ed was overall. He certainly still loves her and his children and I think it is returned but Emma is striving not to leave herself open to more hurt 🤔

Agree with everyone who is sick of that dreadful. Lilian Bellamy.
It is not only what she says but the way she says it.
If she called me “dahling” I would feel like clocking her one.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I've and idea. It was Emma who had proposed to Ed, so why don't they get back together over the coffee table? 29 Feb is probably too soon but the table will keep. I suggested Kate or Kirsty for that date but the first one has walked out and the other received a proposal of marriage.

  32. Having mentioned googling TA youtube recently I decided to do so myself once again and I came across a programme that was broadcast for the 60yrs anniversary that I somehow missed at the time called “ The politics of Ambridge “(Radio) you tube.
In fact as soon as you google TA - YT it is there on the main page. It was two half hour prog but is all in one now.
Extremely interesting clips from past episodes up to the 60 yrs and chats with some cast members, editors and politicians.
Will be interested to read comments from anyone (who listened to it at the time) or does so now.
At this point I will say no more!

  33. I am in total agreement with Lanjan ( 9:17 today ) about the nauseating, cackling Lilian Bellamy.

Re Ed and Emma I too predict a reunion but it would be splendid if Emma could accept that she was equally to blame for the breakup. She was not "binned" she drove Ed away.

    ReplyDelete

    1. She did, but she has been ruled by hurt feelings rather than head ever since they separated, or so it seems.
Hope they reunite, I suppose they will eventually but he's pretty inarticulate, she's bruised, so when/how they manage that honest, sorting out conversation remains to be seen !

  34. Gavin and Emma are two peas sharing the same grandiose pod. He is the snazzy dresser, expensive watch, grand ideas, probably wears a gold chain round his neck. Is a labourer and works for and lives with Dad.
She is ambitious, wants a grand house with tacky modern furniture. She is a cleaner, chicken plucker and barmaid and she lives with her mother and father. Both are most likely getting free board:and lodgings.
She works hard and he has to be told to work hard.
What has Ed got? Work wise he is unreliable, can’t hold down a permanent job. Sartorially he is encased in grubby sheep and farm muck. He is is easily enticed into nefarious activities and like Ambridge men has to be led by the nose. Doesn’t possess many brain cells to engage in the process of synapsing brilliant conversation. Dull comes to mind.
Why would Emma want to go back with Ed? He was dim enough to get shot of her. Instead of helping.

    1. Doesn't Ed have the tenancy of the Grange Farm land, which is separate from the farmhouse. And what about his texcels?
Emma was so proud about these + Peppa,
      which Ed sold cheap.
He does have a future, in my thoughts.

      Delete
    2. Ah Stasia! I have heard it said that some women like "a bit of rough". Lady Chaterley springs to mind.
Emma has always fancied Ed since they were teenagers and he and Will were in competition for her "hand". (Or indeed any other part of her that their ingenuity might suggest and her complacency allow)

      Delete
    3. Indeed Pierre some women do.
Give me Mellors any day rather than Lord Chatterly

      Delete
    4. Tee, hee, me too ! Oi loikes a bi' of rough...

Pierre, chortled at your last sentence in brackets.

Oh, Stasia, how CAN you be so mean about poor, muddle headed Ed ? He does hold down jobs these days, when he gets them, but he's had lots of bad luck. He's a grafter, apreciated by David & others, he did very well working for Adam, until...yes, he did the dodgy work for Tim & Mr Big, but Emma pestered, so he was weak & ignored his instincts. No, he's not the brightest, but not at Will's grunt level & a more stable character than his brother.
You don't really wish that nasty Gav on our plucky little heroine, Emma, do you ?! Please say you don't 😚.....

  35. I am definitely another, who wants Ed + Emma, to recognise that they are made for each other.
Perhaps, Feb. 29th won't bring a proposal of marriage, but a proposal to try to work things out..
The only "single" female, in a relationship of sorts, is Jill,
but there is no probability of her + Leonard, ever marrying.
I just love their true friendship + companionship.

    ReplyDelete
  36. When Emma put her heart on the sleeve last time Ed still said no, but being told by Joe that true love comes but once he rushed back. They'll both need prompting, perhaps Will and Jazzer will fix it this time.

  37. My ideas for Gary to “take on board”- dreadful expression - when they decide to appoint him as scriptwriter (not in residence .)
How about getting rid of Lilian altogether ?
She is no use to the programme.
Feel free to do it in any way you wish.Tidy up all the loose ends and get rid of the characters we haven’t heard from for years like Kathy,Jamie,Dr Locke ,the chap in the attic at Lower Loxley ,Usha.

Re the recent discussion about Lilian and her horse knowledge, wouldn’t Shula also have enough knowledge to realise before letting some of the animals in her care become overweight, or is she too distracted by holier matters to notice?

    1. I think Shula is concentrating on her ordination.

    2. Hadn't thought of that, Seasider, but, yes, why hadn't Shula become aware of her horses becoming overweight before ? Or Alistair, for that matter, who still attended to one of them after the separation, I seem to remember ? Must be, as you & Miriam say, those other preoccupations in her life...
Jakob, however, is particularly good at saying it how it is - can't imagine Peggy getting away with her overweight cat, if he'd been around at that time ! Awkward with Peggy socially, with people in general, but a different person when in vet mode. I guess that fits with being 'on the spectrum'.

  45. As much as I like Lynda, she is going too far now.
The Bull (can't do with the new name) could go out of business, and she will be patially responsible.
As a result, there will be no village pub , and Kenton + Jolene will be homeless plus bankrupt - unless they can sell it on to a gastro pub chain.

I was delighted with Lynda’s action tonight - Ambridge’s very own suffragette chaining herself up for a cause she truly believes in.
I would join her if I could.
And Lilian can go on a very long holiday - perhaps to South America, or wherever Matt is, and not come back. She is becoming unbearable and spoiling TA for me, and many others, I suspect.

    1. I'm with you Archerphile. I think the name change is only a symptom of a whole new marketing approach - presumably thought up by Justin's dreadful "expert", who is obviously steering them towards the trendy 'young' set from further afield. Hence a clever name change, and a seemingly successful series of events like the Valentine's evening (which has has good reviews - apart from Lynda's attempt), and I think Jolene mentioned another for Pancake Day. Not aimed at the locals at all, but at the young, trendy set. Next will be a makeover - out with the brasses and cosy furniture and in with modern art and Scandi furniture. Lynda is quite right to take a stand, and so should the locals, or they may find themselves without a comfortable pub to socialise in before they know it.

But, she is going far too far, with her inciting others to not frequent The Bull.
The locals, need a place to meet up, have a pint + a pie, catch up on + discuss things. It has to be kept as a viable, village pub.
The Bull, might not be as traditional as it once was, but it is still in the centre of Ambridge, where it should remain.
To me, the name will remain The Bull, but things do change, which I accept, but if they for the good or not, I am not sure. I just want the current owners, to remain, just that.
I think, that I heard something about, no more cribbage in The Bull.
This is a wonderful game, which I was taught many years ago (1970/80's?) and still play. It is just a quiet card game between 2 players.

  61. Cheat, Lynda, cheat !

Was Philip really lying to Kirsty, Basia ? Maybe economical with the truth. It is true that it could be awkward if Ed were to be working alongside Gavin, though that didn't seem to bother Ed himself, who knows that G. is Philip's son & works for him, but of course it could equally be true that Philip is in financial straits, can't afford Ed, & doesn't want want to worry Kirsty.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Exactly Basia.
We knew or at least suspected that Phillip was having money problems but now that we have evidence that he is lying to Kirsty it does rather tell us that what some of us have felt for some time.......
The man is not to be trusted..
One assumes that the money for Gavin’s wedding is not now needed but has Phillip already parted with some of his cash to his wastrel of a son?
I have a feeling though that Kirsty will get to the bottom of it.
    She is no fool.

    1. Sorry ladies but why ,apart from your guesswork prejudice against Phillip, have you come to your conclusion that he is lying to Kirsty. He has his reasons for not being able to employ Ed and he has used financial difficulty as a softner to him. He then gave a perfectly valid explanation to Kirsty.
Things may well turn out your way but the evidence you have at the moment is nothing more than suspicion.

      Delete
    2. Pierre, don't include me - I'm a Philip supporter ! Just think he's got 2 reasons. Not sure about Basia, but, ssshh, don't tell her this, Lanjan has had a thing against Philip Moss since his first appearance, so any excuse to blacken his name ...

  63. Why would Philip take Ed on to do work? What's Ed trained at? Philip's been in Ambridge long enough to have heard all about the Grundys. Maybe he knows that Ed was helping to sell dodgy pesticides & wants nothing to do with him....

    ReplyDelete
  64. Suspicion it may be, but Philip gave Kirsty the impression that he's rushed off his feet and could do with some extra help and Gavin going out with Emma after one date?

    1. She is still married to Ed. It's an unclear & ambiguous situation.

    2. Archers scriptwriters are not usually subtle.
They are spelling it out to us.
Phillip could have said that Ed was a basic labourer and he needed specialist plasterers, electricians or joiners which would have made sense but no he comes up with the daft story that he couldn’t employ Ed because his son had been seen out once with Emma .
      That is ludicrous.
Ed knew that Emma and Gavin had been “on a date” if you can call it that and he was prepared to work for Gavin’s father.
No ,sorry you Phillipophiles that man and his dodgy son are trouble.
You will see that I am right.
I will not gloat when it happens
      Weak father; horrible son.
      Dreadful pair .

I still think that Kirsty should decamp to Roy’s.

    3. Ooh. The plot thickens re Philip
I still think there’s something fishy about him.

Can’t wait for the face off between Linda and Lillian.

      Quite enjoyed this evenings episode.

  65. I don’t think Philip is as bad as that but there is certainly something going on with his business and there are money problems. Maybe he has been underpaying taxes and the taxman has caught up with him demanding a large sum or he has overreached with the mortgage on the new property. All will be revealed somewhen!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Are Philip and Gavin invoked in some underhand work to make extra money and that is why Philip does not want Ed around. (If so you are well out of it Ed)

  67. I don't blame Lynda for putting a dummy under the blankets. Why freeze to death when you can go home and sleep in bed. Lilian overacts all the time now and that laugh is dreadful, as has been said before.

  68. As regards to Cribbage I would have thought it would have suited Jakob, as it involves a little bit of mathmatics and tactics which may have appealed to someone with such an analytical and organised mind.
It can be played with two players or four in pairs (the same as Bridge and Whist.)
I really like crib too rather than rummy and other card games.

    1. Is cribbage the game where you have a little board with holes in and matchsticks to move along the holes to record the score - or am I thinking of something else entirely?

      Delete
    2. I have just a few comments to make about Jacob. He is organised in a concrete way, but analytical he is not. He sounds as though he has learned his professional knowledge, by rote. He ‘trots’ out facts and figures in an Android manner. He is an algorithm creation.
Jacob has imo little computer chips for a brain and and is currently waiting for on operation to insert the humanoid chip. That is a personality change.

  69. Spicycushion, I'm all for cribbage as it's an old pub game, even though I'm not familiar with it.
It has nothing to do with Jakob though, has he even been inside the pub? It was 'shoot with arrows' Gavin that one of the regulars tried to rope in to play and he laughed it off as a nuisance.
Nathan Booth - is that the man who's always at the Bull?

    ReplyDelete
  70. I used to play crib with my husband but Katy isn’t interested so the cribbage board went to a jumble sale. I still have a small travelling set so might play again one day. I do enjoy the game unlike many card games. Could not get my head around bridge at all!!

  71. Lanjan regarding Philip I’m in your camp. He is a man of double speak, not employing Ed on the basis of not needing extra labourers is probably down to slack in the business. Earlier he told Kirsty he was needing help but couldn’t employ Ed because of Gavin and Emma.
    Father and son are creepy.

The chainsaw massacre didn’t happen, shame I could do without Lynda and Lillian for a few weeks.

I might get sick of having her as a neighbour always popping in and out- but possibly not.
She is kind and means well
    I prefer her to Jakob.
    She is a northerner.
Years ago and maybe even now ,some people where I lived in Lancashire would knock on a neighbour’s door, open it and call out “It’s only me. “ and walk in..

  74. Basia - I am completely muddled this morning. 🤦‍♀️ It was Gavin who had no idea about crib. In our village we used to play either dominoes or crib in the Public Bar.
Both games used the board and matchsticks to tot up the totals. (I am talking about the 'proper' dominoes where the total spots on either end of the chain has to be divisible by 3 or 5. Not where you just match up either end of the chain, as you do with children)

Archerphile - I used to love counting out my hand of cards, 15,2; 15,4 and a pair is 6! But then my sons would get cross with me because I forgot which way I was 'pegging,' up or down the board! 😀

  75. Thinking about Lilian last night - does she really think a chainsaw is for cutting through chain?
Surely a pair of bolt cutters would be of more use? 🤔 😂

  76. Re my mate Phillip.
He has got so much work on and yet he found the time to clear up the village playground.
He tells Ed that he has to watch his pennies.
I actually think that is the truth .
I wonder how many people he actually employs?
I also wonder where he is working and what project ( s) he is working on.
The winter isn’t the best time for outdoor building work I wouldn’t have thought.

  77. My parents used to play cribbage and the board, which I remember vividly was polished wood and brass. And I expect my dad polished it lovingly as he did all of the brass in our house. Later it became my Saturday job to ' do ' all the brass.
Was that a posh board or were they all like that ?

I've been to physiotherapy today and have at last got a diagnosis on my ankle.
    Yet more arthritis !
Very good bloke, much better than G...... who when he looked at my foot/ ankle last year

  79. It's nice to hear these thoughts about cribbage, many happy memories of playing it with my father and my uncle. And when I was visiting my daughter in America recently I taught it to her, though we had to use paper and pencil rather than a proper cribbage board.

I'm finding the speculation about Philip and Gavin quite intriguing. There's something going on. I wonder how much of the plot development is already decided, or can the script writers almost make it up as they go along? (Sometimes it feels that they do!)

I've noticed that the actors who play Natasha and Gavin are both bilingual (and I think they're both good). If they meet in the studio I can imagine them ripping the story lines, and the other actors, to shreds with no-one having the faintest idea what they're going on about!

  85. I was actually quite amused by Lilian's blackmail last night, to my surprise. Good for her ! Stupid to change the pub name, though, & stupid to make a fuss about it. As has been said, the local focus should be on what is planned for the interior of The Bull...

I thought Josh was pretty mean to his brother about the car, as Ben has been more sympathetic to him than other family members, & is altogether a more attractive character than either of his siblings !

  86. On BBC sounds under the heading of “Drama” are sub headings and TA is under Soaps (with a podcast of EastEnders beside it)
Therefore not too much hope of happy storylines and it seems as though Jim’s SL is about to reopen and Linda informed us her mission re the pub is still on 🙄
In the prog I recommended recently it was lovely to hear about all the record cards that (were) kept for accurate detail etc....
TV soap audiences are dropping away fast due to SL content me included (I followed Corrie all its TV life until about 6 mths ago and although Emmerdale for a shorter period of time gave up for the same reason) so if TA are to follow in their footsteps 😱 is all I can say, but will keep my 🤞🏼

    ReplyDelete
  87. Those record cards were accurate and invaluable. Their disposal has led to the random character switches, historical fogetfulness and couldn't care less attitude of the present day script writers.
I am sure that the details are supposed to have been transferred to some probably archived and now forgotten data base, entirely to the satisfaction of some IT gnome who didn't care.
No use complaining to the BBC though since they would,as usual, insist that any problem they have caused is our fault.
Storylines used to be continuous - not served in dribs and drabs as now.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Are you sure the record cards were disposed of? Maybe they were digitised. That would explain how the BBC blog could feature photos of the actual cards not so long ago. Personally I don’t think we get random character switches so much as three dimensional characterisation. How often, in real life, people are described as acting out of character or showing a different side to their character! Or, an angel abroad and a devil at home.

  88. Too right,Pierre.
I noticed that it was Paul Brodick who wrote this week’s episodes.
I think he is one of the poorest writers but I dare say he is told what he must do by the editor.
The main problem I think is that they seem to change the personalities of the characters all the time..
I imagine that an actor isn’t able to complain that his or her character has been changed for fear of being released as in “The Killing of Sister George” and in the Tony Hancock sketch -called something like “The Wurzels”

  89. If you go back to the original premise of TA, to keep us informed about farming it would be interesting to hear more of personal experiences of farmers such as the pressure on the price of milk and of course how Brexit might affect them. Of course we need to hear about their personal life too to satisfy our gossipy nature! Agree loss of interest lately in the SL’s some of which are very pallid!

  90. I stopped listening about 3 weeks ago and am trying to summon up the will to listen to the back episodes! Just lately I've been wondering if I only listen out of nostalgia. Starting in the mid 50's I remember sitting down with my farmer dad with our after tea cup of tea ( at the old time of quarter to 7) to listen to the Archers, and years ago there was useful information being given out.
Lady R I think it was you that recommended listening to the Politics of Ambridge and that was indeed a blast from the past. I can just remember the commotion of the scene when Grace died. I hadn't remembered it was quite so political, and had forgotten how very radical Pat was.

    1. I go back to the 50’s too Janice. Listening in with my Mum as I laid the kitchen table for dinner. She was keen to hear the Archers as she thought it was going to be a rural Mrs Dales Diary, which she loved and that would be more appropriate for us as we lived in the country and kept chickens etc!
I started watching Emmerdale Farm (as it then was) from the first episode - on at lunchtime as I was feeding my 6month old baby daughter. It had been promoted as a ‘television Archers’ so I was very keen, still being a dedicated Archers Addict.
And to start with, it was just that - lots of farming content, cows, sheep, the price of feed, milk etc. But when a new editor decided to kill off half the characters with the infamous plane crash on the village, and the stories became more about ‘relationships’. with very little farming content I stopped watching and have never gone back

  95. I know that I listen mainly out of habit and for reasons of nostalgia.
I have always claimed that ' it all flows over my head ' and it does, but I have always mourned the wilful loss of the archive and have said so many times on this blog, as well as stating it when we were with the BBC.
Listening, despite my cavalier statement must enter my senses since I frequently say out loud ' she would never say that' or, ' no that didn't happen in that way '.

The Archers is nothing in comparison to its earlier decades.

I don't think it likely that it would be axed since 'they' seem to be putting so much effort into enticing a younger audience.
But then I suppose if the effort is not matched by listening figures then it might be kaput.
