Life in Ambridge

  1. Will Lynda be recuperating here for the foreseeable future? Or will the unthinkable happen...?

    1. A lovely, peaceful, healthy scene, Gary, set in the never never land of Ambridge ( where everyone is used to lockdown, so no change or upheavals there; in fact, I don't think they know of anything that is going on outside Borsetshire....)

  2. FROM PREVIOUS BLOG...

Note that when Alistair told Philip about a gathering in aid of the injured he said it would be 'at the pub'. Philip was understandably dubious, in his place I'd give it a miss.

  3. Ah, Ambridge Hall. Obviously painted before the arrival of the llamas or Lynda’s Shepherds Hut.
I so hope she makes it back here but will they be able to keep the B&B going or is Lynda going to need long term care.
Perhaps we shall have a character in a wheelchair after all. They missed the opportunity with Nigel, but with the BBC’s commitment to diversity is it time to bring TA up to date?

  4. I find it just ridiculous that Lynda would be receiving visitors nevermind having coherent conversations with people!

AP - I too find it a bit odd that no-one in Ambridge seems to have any kind of disability. No one ever mentions arthritis, dodgy hips or knees. People seem to die immediately or are miraculously cured of everything within 13 minutes of anything happening to them, with no long lasting effects on their bodies! (The dementia storyline excepted of course...)

And I wouldn't mind one little bit if Covid 19 wasn't mentioned at all in The Archers to be honest with you...

    ReplyDelete
  5. Yes, I would have expected her to be in a coma for much longer and as previously said would surely have gone to a specialist burns unit. Apart from Jack’s dementia the only other elderly condition has been Jill’s cataracts. Maybe though we have enough of all that in real life! Mike, my husband used to say “Old age isn’t for wimps!”

  7. Gary 2.50 pm - I agree and would be happy not to have Covid 19 mentioned at all. Real life's full of this at the moment and T/A needs to be an escape from that.

  8. I saw Leonard in Corrie, in an episode, last night.
No wonder, he hasn't been heard recently in Ambridge.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I am in total agreement, with GG. that Ambridge stays a Covid19 "free zone".
I just want to hear Ambridge + its residents, as normal - (as long as recordings continue to be made).

    ReplyDelete
  10. The time when The Archers goes off the air will surely mean the end of the world as we know it.
Perhaps we'll have to do with repeats, we could go back 70 years.

    1. I would prefer, 30 or 40 years ago, to show current characters being very much younger, and not those, who are sadly, no more.
I expect to hear far more from the younger Ambridge residents, to "protect" the likes of Jill + Peggy and other more senior cast members.

  11. At least Bridge Farm, Home Farm and Brookfield, can supply a wonderful variety of fresh veg + meat, such as lamb, beef + venison, not forgetting the pork, bacon + sausages...
I think I might move there!
I will go to either the B@amBridge or Ambridge Hall, Perhaps, Carole T's spare bedroom in Glebe Cottage, might be an option.
If none of these are available, then a caravan at Home Farm, will be just as cosy, as there will be no european workers, this year.

  12. I don't think visiting Lynda will make Oliver feel better but it's her wish.

    1. I think it will, partly because Robert will have to force himself to be civil when he asks him to go. Of course, he'll be very distressed when he sees how badly burnt she is, & the pain she's going through, but she'll be very clear in exonerating, him from all blame, which should reassure him somewhat. After all, Lynda is quick to blame when she sees fit, (& not always justly, either.)

      Delete
  13. Apart from Lynda & Robert, a very convincing conversation in those circumstances, chatting about the animals, her weak vouce, every movement and agony, but the other scenes seened bitty & irrelevant - couldn't be bothered to listen with much attention !

    1. I got the distinct impression that Lynda knows exactly how bad she is but is struggling to seem positive for Richard's sake. He is convinced she will recover, or at least is trying very hard to convince himself. I'm not sure how long Lynda will be able to tolerate such relentless positivity : (

  14. I fear that Lynda May relapse, possibly this has been planned with Carole Boyd, and the script writers could substitute in covid19 instead of a more prosaic common or garden pneumonia.
I don’t think Robert will find it too difficult to apologise to Oliver, he may find it harder to be civil to Gavin or show sympathy to Blake

    ReplyDelete
  15. I have that feeling too KP. That poor Lynda will suffer some sort of relapse as she's recovered unrealistically quickly from such devastating injuries.
I hope that Oliver will be helped after visiting Lynda.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Didn't I suggest that might happen, in a post last week ?
    I'm sure I did.

  17. I found Robert Snell really dislikeable with his unpleasant attitude to Oliver and I was pleased the Lynda checked him. She is being so saintly that I fear she l cannot be with us much longer. Once she has had her big forgiveness scene with Oliver....

    2. Carolyn - you means more compassionate and understanding than me? I make no apologies for seeing a side to Robert Snell, brought out by his current situation no doubt, which I would rather not have seen

      Delete
    3. I was surprised, that even hearing Lynda’s refusing to blame Oliver for her condition, Robert was still reluctant to apologise and agree that the explosion was not Olivers fault. I thought he sounded quite petty about it and am very glad that Lynda insists in seeing Oliver in person to put his mind at rest. (Though no doubt that will be more difficult when he actually sees her injuries)
Lynda’s attitude is much more forgiving that Robert’s

  18. Well most of that episode washed over me. My brain meandering here and there when Kirsty, Roy, and Adam and even Brian were talking. All I remember is DJ, tractor and Linda suddenly finding a ‘normal’ voice. Inhalation, Intubation, skin grafting etc and a miracle has occurred.

  20. The Archers
    @BBCTheArchers

#Breaking “For the time being we have enough episodes of #TheArchers recorded to keep taking listeners to Ambridge as usual for the weeks ahead but like everyone else we are faced with an unprecedented situation.

We’re working on plans for beyond this given there are significant challenges and the safety and well being of #TheArchers production team and cast are paramount.

We’re sure listeners will understand this and we’ll update as plans become clearer.” Jeremy Howe, Editor of The Archers

    1. Thanks Gary, do hope they can find a way to continue production. We need to know if Lynda is recovering and will Kirsty eventually get married.

    2. Thanks for the update, Gary. Maybe Lynda is well on the way to recovery in what they've already recorded. I expect she'll have skin grafts & a very long recuperation.

    3. GG Thanks for the update, it is very much appreciated.
I expect that things re TA will change, but it is nice to know, just not yet.

    4. “The End of the World is Nigh” ...... they may have to stop recording The Archers!
I might have to parade up and down with my sandwich boards outside the BBC.

    5. Eastenders, Doctors, Holby City, Casualty - have already stopped production, so will TA.

    6. You can’t do that Archerphile.
      You should be self isolating.

    7. Strictly speaking, they could all record their parts separately and then be edited together. Unlike telly, the only place we need to see them together is in our own heads.

I did read of a choir whose members all had cystic fibrosis. Because they are not allowed to meet physically because of infection risk (even pre-coronavirus) someone set up a recording lab where they could come and sing one at a time and then the recordings were combined. The place had a thorough cleaning between each session.

  21. I would love to hear TA going forward for some weeks yet, with the recorded episodes.
Perhaps it can be done by only 3 episodes a week, Mon, Weds + Friday, with a shortened Sunday omnibus.
The other thought is, to keep it to 6 days a week, then replay episodes from 1980 (my thought only), onwards.
This is 40yrs ago, and it will bring back memories to some, but for others, a revelation as to how Ambridge was then.
    Other thoughts?

  22. Archerphile, I said pretty much the same last night, the end of the world as we know it!
Tonight, apart from Philip at the hospital and later the pub, not much happened really, yet they managed to use 9 actors, did they already know they might be out of a job?
Please don't explain, to me at least, what happened with Roy's car, not interested.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Two ways of developing what was a pointless episode on the face of it: delayed effects of concussion (or worse) - the deep gash on Roy’s forehead has been referred to a lot, and played down by him, or, he was parked in Beechwood for another reason altogether......

  24. Well, I think we all know what Lilian’s idea for cheering Lynda up is, don’t we?
Back to THE BULL for sure, and restore the original pub sign. 😃

  25. I hope you're right about that Archerphile.
Also had thoughts about Roy's head injury causing him to be forgetful.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Linda is also on heavy doses of pain meds yet awake and chatting at over 70 yrs but Blake young and fit (prior to event of course) is not round yet. More realistic it has to be said.
Roy is obviously having delayed reaction to those same events let’s hope he is not going to be an early onset dementia SL. More likely PTSD (?)

    Now to read other comments.

  28. It felt like entering a parallel universe this evening!

Clearly the residents of Ambridge got wind of the coronavirus way before us and decided that the only way to keep safe was to socially distance the whole village from the outside world.

Jenny darling demurred for a bit until she realised that it would mean that no-one would twig that she'd stopped shopping at Underwoods because she could no longer afford their prices.

Oliver and Lynda offered local residents half-price stays at Grey Gables or Ambridge Hall on condition that they posted glowing reviews on Trip Advisor without admitting that they were locals. This part of the arrangement is clearly no longer necessary - but I refuse to believe that Blake was acting in reprisal because he lives past Felpersham so a) didn't qualify for locals' rates and b) was about to be faced with the choice of moving to Ambridge for the forseeable future or finding another job.

Or perhaps the 'explosion' was all a front - everyone is alive and well, Grey Gables is still intact, and the whole business was just a ploy to stop disgruntled potential guests complaining they couldn't book a room and the world at large realising that Ambridge was the last remaining refuge against covid-19.

(Or perhaps I just need to get out more ; ) )

  30. I think Robert will wake up, find Linda in the shower fit and well and realise it was all a dream! That will be in a year’s time though as in Dallas about two seasons had gone past before Pammy woke up! A long sleep that!!😂😂🤔

    ReplyDelete
  31. Does Blake have a surname? I need to add him to my list of amazing recoveries from near-fatal accidents (though Linda's may only be temporary, and hopefully Matt Crawford’s was too).

    ReplyDelete
  32. So Beechwood has turned from a brand new housing development of 18 houses, at least 2 being 'executive' houses, and just one 'affordable house into a sink estate within six months of so?
Would there be many families with disaffected teenagers who wanted to move out to Ambridge to buy a new build ?
Anyway there has been plenty of anti-social behaviour from the long term residents in the past e.g Roy, Jamie, Tom, Kirsty, Josh, and the Grundy brothers; even Kate !

    ReplyDelete
  33. And another thing!
This week's writer is Adrian Flynn who had someone last night in The Bull (Jolene?) say that "Lynda was very keen on the Lent Appeal."
What absolute codswallop! Lynda and Lilian had a row about Lilian tricking Lynda (who knew nothing about the details of the appeal )into paying £20 for the appeal.
Don't the scriptwriters read/listen to previous episodes to continue the story lines? Sometimes it makes you want to cry, all the sloppy work of these so called professional writers!

  34. What was the purpose of Phoebe’s presence last night? Shouldn’t she be out and about rewilding? Histrionics from Roy is the gash to the head changing his personality. He is certainly disordered. I lost my car once in Gatwick airport but his was just up the road in what he perceives to be hooligan land.
    Boring, boring.

    1. Surely Roy is just still traumatised, by the recent events? He coped so well.
I don't think a gash on the head, caused by some flying glass, would cause a personality change.

      Delete
  35. According to the synopsis Roy drove to Beechwood to visit Kirsty, so that's a legitimate reason and then she dropped him off (on her way somewhere?) and he forgot his car, whatever.
I maintain my theory that they crammed 9 people in before it all goes off the air.

    1. The GG explosion was no doubt a long planned big SL how unfortunate for the team that an even bigger event has coincided in the real world at the same time and even worse the SL has a cruise featured in it. Normally anything big would have a slotted in remark but this is so big to make sense I guess scripts would have to be re written and re recorded which would be difficult right now of course, but I agree wholeheartedly that it is surreal listening right now
Let’s all move to Ambridge I say 🤣

  45. Another step nearer for Ed & Emma? Neil and Susan on way home from the airport lucky them 🤣
How long was their cruise? it seems they have been away for ages. Linda continues to amaze such vocal recovery alongside the odd twinge, and of course we knew “The Bull” would be reinstated and thank goodness for that 🤗

    1. PS. I favour The Bard (recalling the tradition that Shakespeare once stayed there - I like that better than the usual origins of ‘The Bull’, that the village bull was kept there, or the lord of the manor had a bull on his coat of arms) - or, my top favourite pub name, ‘The Wicked Lady’.

  47. Worth remembering that the first case of Corvid-19 was on January 31st, just seven weeks ago. Scripts, according to Keri Davis, are planned and written three months or more in advance. They are sent to actors two months in advance for read-throughs and rehearsals and then recorded a month in advance. So when the present situations in Ambridge were taking place in the real world no-one had heard of Corona virus and pandemics etc!

  48. I think I’ve found a cure for the Coronavirus. Just ship in Lillian who will tell us to pull ourselves together, whilst waving her wand and cackling “you jolly well will get better, or else the Bull will revert to the B, dahling” cackle, cackle.
