Basia......ooh. Maybe. Wonder what’s on the laptop? I’d forgotten about that.
If Kirsty keeps on pestering as she is I reckon she’s going to find out about Philips evil side sooner than we think! He was getting a bit short with her last night.

Orange eh!! Well all I’ve seen lately are orange minis. So I would say Ben is the height of fashion! I’m glad he’s grateful for his car and not whinging about the colour. He’s the nicest of the 3 Brookfield children.

Our local self employed builder has a bright orange van. He apparently got it at at a knock down price because of the colour.

    1. Do the SWs really believe that teenagers would be so precious about being seen in a "car of unfashionable colour"? I reckon that if it has a wheel at each coner and can get from a to b they would be happy to ride and show what amusing "characters" they are.
My first car bought for the price of £32. (many years pre MOT) was brush repainted red by me. There was a crack in the chasis which had to be re welded from time to time.. you could tell when this was necessary because the doors would fly open on hitting a bump in the road. It was happily used by my teenage friends. And well remembered by those who are now Wrinklies.

    2. That would be why Leonard Berry got Ben’s car cheap then.

    3. Shame it's a car, not a van. Otherwise Ben would always know when he'd been Vango-ed.

Still, I bet it's better than the mustard yellow I imagined.

My first car was a British Racing Green Mini. His name was Sterling Moss : )

  2. Oh shut up Pip..grow up. Ben is thrilled with his car and so proud to take his gran for a spin....bet it becomes a real "Babe magnet" that would teach them all.
..and Pip..are you permanently drunk😩it certainly sounds it..it sounding as if she was playing a game of Twitter...poor sheep

  3. For some reason green cars are supposed to be unlucky. The three that were passed down to me were all red.

  4. A look into the future - specifically the moment Kirsty turns to Helen for support & advice after she finds out about Philip's true nature....

"Helen, I feel so used! My life is in tatters! Why do I make so many bad decisions in my life? Help me Helen, HELP ME!!!"

"I'm really happy with my new batch of cheese Kirsty! And the boys really like Lee!"

  5. I agree with Autumnleaves about Pip. She sounded very strange last night, I wondered if she was eating something whilst talking, or, as AL said, was drunk. Why does Daisy Badger have to overact, or is it overemphasise all the time? It’s getting more irritating by the day.
And I was wrong about the car being lime green
But orange isn’t so bad - better than bright pink, anyway. 😄

Phillip. - Kirsty what the hell are you doing?
I thought I told you not to touch my paper work.

Kirsty - and I told you ,Phillip that I wanted to help you,
    so why not let me?
You have been so stressed lately that I wanted to take over some of the more mundane aspects of your work.
    I really don’t mind,honestly

Phillip-and I told you ,Kirsty ,not to interfere.
I know what I am doing so please just let me get on with it

    Pause

    Kirsty-Phillip,wha t are you hiding?
What is it that you are not telling me?

Dum de dum de dum de dum.

A truly remarkable video message from the wonderful Tim Bentinck, recorded especially for us! **************************************************************************************************

I shall be buying a copy of his book ‘Being David Archer - And Other Unusual Ways of Earning a Living’ before the end of the day by way of thanks for this wonderful gesture...!

Gary, is it possible to alter the access settings for us, if not, transcribe the message?

  17. Fantastic, David, creative practically as well as artistically ! A super upbeat message from inside Mr. Bentinck's shed. How very nice of him. This crisis makes for interesting interactions & reaching out towards others, more than usual, which is so heartening. When walking, yesterday & the day before, keeping a deliberate social distance, it happened a lot, brief chats & smiles.
'David' echoes some of listeners' views, doesn't he.

All power to him & the TA team & to you, Gary, for initiating this !

Surprised some of you aren't getting this - hope you do soon.

He is such a nice man.
I was worried about the danger of the end of the loo roll holder and also thought a candle lit in such close proximity to the paper was risky.

  21. Thrilled to hear from eldest G daughter that she received an email today accepting her at Westminster, formerly Harrow School of Art.
She was not able to have her interview due to the C virus and was expecting them to ask her to photograph her complete portfolio, but instead they have offered her a place on the strength of her highlighted portfolio submitted with her initial application.
She now has to make a choice Kingston, accepted there a fortnight ago, or Harrow, so a lot more research by her before making her choice.
Her sister, worried about not being able to take her GCSEs has now come to terms with the very strong possibility that she will be given good grades on the strength of her coursework, evidence of hard work and her mocks in which she did well.
I am still waiting to hear from both of them and their brother that they have actually signed up for some volunteering in their community.

  22. The way I remember it is that Lynda followed Freddie into the changing room because he wouldn't accept her apology, but that's in the past and I hope he goes to see her. I couldn't see the point of the medal, far too excessive and the rest of the episode was just stupid I think.

If Jennifer Dahling can tell us 1000 times about 'my clever grand-daughter's going to Oxford' then you're entitled to tell her about yours. (I presume there's a link to this blog on the Ambridge website.)

Borsetshire teens are going to be the only people in the country actually sitting exams this summer. Fortunately it won't skew the results for everyone else as the invisible force-field around the county boundary keeps almost everyone inside - except the brave ones who make it to Birmingham or the genius Aldridge-offspring who travel all the way to Oxford. (Although, as has already been commented on, they tend to come back. Perhaps the force-field acts like a giant bungee cord.)

  27. I found the scene between Robert & Freddie touching. This explosion has brought out the best in the boy, it's the beginning of his rehabilitation. I liked the idea of the war medal as a talisman, something for Freddie to refer to, not in the sense of being a hero, but knowing he is capable of rising to the occasion, & doing what needs to be done, instead of screwing up royally as he has done in the past.

As for the sibling adventure, with Joy making an appearance, sure, a contrast to the above, but one I could have done without ! Still think Ben is the most likeable of the three, but do feel rather sorry for Josh these days.

I think Freddie should visit Lynda in hospital simply because she'd like him to. Bit much to give him a father's war medal though. Couldn't Robert have given him a gift card or something else a bit more suitable.

What a lovely guy he is and so kind to take the time and trouble to chat to us and show us around his shed and garden.
It makes me feel that we fans are really important to the actors and it would be lovely to see a message or video from one or two more of them.
You, personally, have raised the profile of our little blogging community to the heights and it’s lovely to know we are taken seriously by the ‘stars of the show’
A million thanks from me. 😚

  31. Just watched the video, great fun, Tim seems a really nice guy. I’ve already got his book, admittedly only partly read, but I’ve got a bit of spare time on my hands now.

  32. I think we probably are important to the actors on TA.
If they read our blog, and I tend to believe that on the whole most people tell the truth, they will know that some of us on here have been listening throughout our lives, long long before some of them were even born.
They know that TA is an iconic programme world wide, and that some of us have listened for many decades must be significant to them.
And those like Peggy and Jill, who themselves have been with us, growing older, for all those decades, must appreciate our still listening, daily, to them very much indeed.

So, if you Archers actors really do read what we say and think about you, ( even if only occasionally) perhaps you might be prepared to repay the compliment.
We in turn will be properly in thrall !

Tim and Nick have led the way....
    You know where we are.

  33. So pleased to be able to air my views again and what a treat to see the video of Tim. I really enjoyed the interaction between Robert and Freddie for personal reasons. I have been away looking after my father these past couple of years and after he passed l gave an RAF badge to a youngster in the street who used to visit him. You would have thought l gave him a thousand pounds. I have been able to listen to most of the episodes even though l couldn’t comment.
Listening to the Archers has kept me sane.(believe it or not).

    1. I thought the medal was quite sweet.

Lynda means the world to Richard. Freddie saved her life. In Richard's eyes, nothing he could give Freddie would be enough to show his gratitude. The medal was something that had sentimental value to Richard. It was also originally awarded for an act of bravery in saving the life of a colleague.

Hunting for it, and taking it to Freddie, also gave Richard something constructive to do. He's doing his best to encourage and support Lynda but there's not much he can physically do to help her at present. (As we heard tonight!) With all the medics bustling around, he probably feels a bit of a spare part. If the Great Medal Presentation made him feel a bit happier then fair play to him.

What a lovely gesture to send us a little video message of reassurance. He's a real gentleman. Interesting to hear that they may be recording more episodes whilst widely separated in real life. I heard a snippet from a play that was due to be toured by a Scottish company on Frontrow the other evening where the performers were miles apart. A tiny bit strange at first, but by the end the actors had loosened up and it was starting to go with a swing. Can be done.

    1. I'm wondering how the writers are going to effect re-entry from Ambridge's virus-free bubble into the strange new world the rest of us are currently inhabiting.

Perhaps there has been a major communications failure in Borsetshire which is preventing people, news, and viruses crossing the county border. One of Pip's PPE chums, or Joy's inattentive offspring, will breach the divide, bringing both news and virus to the pristine climate of Ambridge. Or maybe it will be Rob, on a ventilator but bent on revenge ...

  40. Happy to see you here again, Old Fogey, after a tough time, personally.

Liked your story about giving your father's RAF badge to his young friend, & his awed reaction, exactly as Freddie felt ( as I noted last night). It's not just an object from long ago but what comes with it, from the giver. Something treasured, passed on to another, to be treasured again.

  42. It is so friendly of 'Rex' & 'David' to respond to Gary's message. I don't mind at all if none of the others get round to it, they have their lives, just as we all have ours, likewise learning to adapt & stay positive. it's enough to know that they & the production team are working on ways to continue TA, distantly. Good luck to them all, professionally & personally ! 😉😊

  43. Regarding last nights scene between Freddie and Robert : I thought Freddie sounded not only embarrassed, but very uncomfortable with Robert’s overwhelming thanks.
It made me wonder, just for a moment, if something happened in that kitchen that Freddie has not spoken about. He is so reluctant to be praised and called a hero but is that just because of his past reputation in the village being overturned, or did he not rescue Lynda in exactly the way everybody thinks? Is he hiding some of the facts?
I certainly hope not because I want to think he has truly turned the corner into becoming a kind, thoughtful, reliable young man and that the explosion experience has been the making of him.

    ReplyDelete
  44. But we heard in real time what Freddie was up to in the kitchen, and for my ears that was doing his utmost in fear, panic and frustration to rescue Linda.
It also sounded to me that he felt he ought to rescue the worker who's name he didn't know, but couldn't get him to respond.
I think his reluctance to acknowledge his part in the rescue is due to his being acutely aware of his fear and panic at the time. He is too young and inexperienced in life to understand that despite having those feelings, yet still overcoming them in order to get himself and Linda out, are what makes his actions heroic.

  48. Lynda got someone to stand in for her and went into the changing room continuing to apologise to Freddie and then to investigate what was going on in the kitchen. I said at the time that with her apology still up in the air Lynda would become a victim with Freddie feeling guilty. I think that's what's holding him back from facing her but she'll be able to reassure him.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Could they come up with a plot device in which the characters are recording their thoughts & memories for a Borchester Echo/Local History project? Each character could get 13 minutes to themselves - but the *ahem* "wiser" folks like Peggy could get a couple of episodes to reminisce! I would listen to that quite happily...

    ReplyDelete
  50. What a nice man and he gave us a tour of his shed and garden.
I think we are all able to separate the real person from the character. I agree with Basia if the acting is poor then it is perfectly acceptable to make a critical comment. It’s what I’d do after seeing a play, opera or film. The same applies to books. Although others are entitled to make opposing judgements.
Now I’m putting on my critical 🎩 hat. The getting pissed for Ben’s birthday was over done and I didn’t find it very well acted, completely over the top. Verging on the histrionic.
It, imo, diminished the emotive interaction between Freddie and Robert which was well acted. Giving Freddie the medal 🏅 was a real and symbolic gesture to thank him for rescuing Lynda, and It indicated how much Robert is attached to his Lindy.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Didn’t Freddie have a real go at Linda just before the accident calling her something like a nosey old bat etc. If it was at that point he will be feeling deeply remorseful and unworthy of any gratitude from anyone let alone Robert. I hope Robert never finds out although I thought at one point Freddie was going to tell him exactly why he couldn’t accept such a precious family heirloom.

    ReplyDelete

    1. LadyR. Lynda was provoking Freddie by accusing him of reverting to his previous criminal behaviour when he was in fact supporting and protecting the balding Jonny. I might have resorted to calling her an old bag under those circumstances.
Jonny should have stepped in earlier ending Lynda’s opinions which were based on little actual evidence.
I rest my case your Ladyship.

That episode was a total waste of time .
I don’t think Peggy would have been that stupid.
    Why prolong the conversation.
Why didn’t Lynda just tell Peggy that she needed to go to the toilet-or lavatory ?
I thought that silly simpering Jill pretending to understand and even condone Ben’s antics on his 18th birthday was out of character too.
It was if she was saying that his parents wouldn’t understand why he had acted in such a way but she ,his grandmother did.

Surely it would have been more logical to broadcast the programme on Monday-Friday as she suggested and just have the omnibus on a Sunday.

    1. That does make far more sense - UNLESS there are quite a few episodes coming up where the actual days are mentioned and logistics dictate that the Friday episodes being lost will end up making marginally more sense than losing Sunday episodes! 59. Agree with all the comments re tonight's episode.
However I noted a new name as the writer, male I think, and felt he was playing directly to a gallery of teens and twenties.

    Appalling episode !

And what was the point of Peggy talking about her mother, although MrsP not mentioned by name.
I thought when she was talking about her that GGs wish had been granted pronto.

  60. We need more depth of character from the younger Ambridge generation not just drunken nights out (which are not always birthdays etc either) and their sex lives. Otherwise when they take over the main rolls they will be like a load of empty vessels. The key storyline tonight appeared to be Ben losing (?) his virginity.
    TMI as they say ‼️

  61. I think it's important for young men to be taught to respect women. I'm afraid I found tonight's episode distasteful. Ben and Josh's attitudes feel fifty years out of date to me.

  62. It was me, LanJan, who first wished they had reverted to the original Mon - Fri format. You can’t have a cliff hanger on a Thursday for goodness sake!
Tonight’s episode was awful, especially for final episode of the week.
The writing (and some of the acting) was dreadful. The scenes between Lynda and Peggy, Jill and Ben were, frankly, just out of character, embarrassing and pointless.
We’ll just have to hope things pick up next week, I suppose.

  63. Didn't listen to tonight's episode. Sounds like I dodged a bullet!

    ReplyDelete
  64. I found poor Lynda difficult to listen to tonight. She sounded so distressed and there's Peggy waffling on seemingly clueless. Not true to character I feel. She would have twigged at once.
I thought Jill was almost pathetic in her conversation with Ben. Sounding as if she's trying to be so 'hip' and in with the youngsters. Advising him to be 'careful' too, how embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  65. I like Lynda’s ‘ill’ voice better than her usual one- I think it’s the actor’s own speaking voice without all Lynda’s affectations. I hope Lynda keeps her new voice because it makes her a more believable person and less of a joke.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I saw Carole Boyd being interviewed once and she does have a much softer normal speaking voice, more like the one we have heard since her hospitalisation.
It’s a relief not to hear all Lynda’s exaggerated foreign accents and the haranguing tones she sometimes employs and I hope it continues when she is well and back in the community.

    2. It is most lifelike that Lynda would forget to put on her voice affectations. She is too ill to bother. I too hope she will not revert. Carole is avoid actress and I have seen and heard her in many other programmes. She has a nice voice.

    3. I assumed it was damage to her throat that was making her hoarse and halting?

  66. An unpleasant episode with a bunch of unpleasant characters. The exception being Lynda.
I had very nasty thoughts about what I’d love to see happen to Peggy and it involved a ⚰️ coffin.
Ben and unprotected sex, he sounded as though he had never heard of such a thing! Then at 8pm the nation began to CLAP.
All I can say is the S/W conveyed a very misogynistic tale of young country folk.
    Yuck!

  67. There was an annoying post published this morning in which some mental midget tried to get us to go to his gaming site. Gary was on to it and had it removed within the hour.
Hi Gary, indebted to you as ever.

  68. I teach English as a foreign language here in Italy and I'm always thrilled when I hear the voices of our beloved Ambridge characters in our text books...Brian, Elizabeth, Ed, Kirsty. Shula is especially prominent in the listening of the Cambridge esol exams.
In fact there is a whole chapter in New English File intermediate plus dedicated to th archers complete with an interview with Tim Bentinck on how he uses his voice to convey feelings. I've said it before and i'll say it again..the majority of the real actors on TA are master's of their art ....

  69. I've listened again today to last nights episode, and again I BLAME the new writer.
I M O he needs to go away and listen to how these characters, and the tone of TA and how it has projected itself over the decades and THINK AGAIN.

  70. But I must say that like others I did enjoy Linda's reduced capacity as reflected in her voice.
If she survives and does become a disabled member of the village, perhaps her personality will be softened along with her voice.
This would not be a character change, but rather a character development, because we have seen a more gentle side to Linda on previous occasions.

  71. What am I going to listen to on my iPod, in bed tonight before I go to sleep?
Any (suitable, legal, honest and decent) suggestions to replace my nightly dose of Archers?

    1. "Cosmic Quest" - an amazing series of 15 minute episodes about the cosmos presented by the late, great Heather Couper! It covers everything we ever wondered about the stars since we first ever looked upwards. It's on BBC Sounds.

    2. Thanks for your suggestion, GG. Just enjoyed Heather Couper's excellent presentation on the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence as a fill-in for the everyday story of country folk and not one word of abuse or slipper was hurled at my wireless during the whole programme. That was the last episode, so now l have to listen to all the other 29 and l am looking forward to it.
Looking forward to Sunday evening which may have a Friday cliff-hanger.

    3. Ha! I've (sadly?) listened to the whole thing twice. I find it soooooo relaxing....

  72. Withdrawl symptoms setting in - No Archers tonight.😭
Still at least my meal will be edible.
I would have prefered the Sunday episode to be dropped, not Fridays. My preference.

  73. Interesting suggestion, Gary, not to be dismissed at all, but right now, I'm not unhappy to do without TA for a couple of evenings....

  74. I've felt it too, though Front Row at least acknowledged the loss.
Front Row is to be extended on Friday and will also incorporate Saturday review, both essential listening for me, so I shall cope, but the loss of Friday TA is most unsatisfactory and reverting to no Sunday episode would be far preferable.

  75. Yes, strange decision as we have the omnibus on Sunday morning which would see us through until Monday. I missed TA tonight!

  76. Old Fogey ,I made a suggestion on the previous blog as to what the cliff hanger will be on Sunday.
It involved Kirsty and Phil unsurprisingly.

    1. Lanjan, l had a wee read at your cliffhanger script and l sensed Phil’s underlying menace. Let’s see how much he takes before he shows his true colours.

  77. I suggest going back to last week and listen to Paul temple...by Timothy. Or there are 3 episodes of Barry cryer narrating his life story.

    1. Just found episode 5 of Barry cryer on radio 4 extra so I don’t know how many episodes there are.
I’m enjoying Scotland Street at the moment too.

  79. I have been listening to the Paul Temple series this week, as accompaniment to my afternoon jigsaw sessions. But these newly made series have one big drawback - no Coronation Scott introductory music! It’s that tune that sets the scene for me and raises the hair on the back of my neck!

  80. Like you Archerphile that piece of music means Paul Temple to me.
It takes me back to childhood, hearing that through the wall as I went to sleep told me that all was right with the world.
There were also rows, but if I heard that music, I knew that my parents were comfortable with each other that evening.
