Primogeniture doesn't exist any more in the UK thankfully.
The obvious thing for Nigel to do would have been to divide the house into three so that if he died before Elizabeth then Freddie, Lily and Elizabeth would each have their own quarters.
    A bit like Kensington Palace!
The land could be sold and some affordable houses could be erected
When the twins were born many large estates were being given over to The National Trust .
Quite honestly I don't know how LL is surviving.
I don't think Nigel was that savvy with money.

    Ev - October 28, 2020 at 9:34 PM
They make money with “Deck the Halls” and through the year with weddings etc. Also of course Nigel’s wine! You would think though that this year would be a bit lean for them!

    GaryGilday - October 28, 2020 at 10:14 PM
Don't forget the massive success of Freddie's tours of the attic - that must have made enough cash to see them through to 2025 quite comfortably.
And the "Ghost Story" nights that they had last year, where quite inexplicably, countless dozens of people (most of them elderly) managed to easily climb into the rafters of an old house.
Oh, and then there was the Halloween performances that were entirely unsuitable for the children that they were targeting as an audience.
And let's not forget that they somehow ran a wedding venue without an alcohol license for the best part of a year too! They must be ROLLING in money...🙄🙄🙄

Oh Gary 😂🤣😂 very true though!

Did the Facebook crowd notice that yesterday Pip took time out of her working day to take Rosie to the park?

  3. Goodness, what an old ruin! (Not you Gary! 😂)

Haven’t had time to look at FB yet, Maryellen
In fact I may well give up following things on Facebook. They have (without any option) changed the whole layout of the site, which is making it very difficult to navigate. I don’t like what they have done to it at all, neither do many of my friends. Think they are going to loose a lot of members,
I’ll stick to our blogs in future.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Exactly ,Pierre .
Those months spent alone in his room did him no good at all.
I would rather have Pip than him and that is saying something.

    1. Ben anyday, rather than Pip. He is behaving like any 1st year Uni/College student. They think that they are now "free" from the parents and are now longer tied to their apron strings, regardless of costs still incured.
      How wrong he is.
I had my student grant "topped up" by my parents, who had 2 daughters in Uni/College, for 9 consecutive years (as 2 of us did 4 year courses) and overlapped. They had to contribute to all our grants, and then there was the extra food bills, house-hold costs, when home during the holidays. We all had student holiday jobs, but were never asked for any contribution.
My parents supported the 3 of us financially for nearly 27 yrs (and later when needed), but that's not for now.

  5. I have just discovered that, as part of The Archers 70th celebrations, there are to be three books published about Ambridge in the day’s before it was first heard about in 1951 (or prequels as they like to call them.)
The first will be Ambridge at War, all about what the residents did during the war and how it affected village life. Should be quite interesting I think.
Details and moor information are given on the Archers website.

  10. Doesn't she have any loyalty to the father of her child? Shame on her! And then to have the gall to ask him to look after Rosie after Nursery. I hope Rosie asks a lot of questions when she is older. I thought they had a lease but must have got that wrong. Tonight a short term let was mentioned. I was cheering Rex on when he didn't pull his punches at the end.

    1. Lanjan and Janice I agree 100% with your assesment of the characters of the Brookfield younger generation. They are despcable unpleasant selfish shower!

  12. I think Pip was putting Rosie’s interests first, and the other 5 members of her family who are dependent on Brookfield. T❤️O❤️B❤️Y’s cool- headedness was a welcome change from Rex’s tantrums

    ReplyDelete
  13. Toby is an Archer by association as father to David and Ruth’s grandchild, Rex’s anger understandable and glad he confronted Pip used as she is
to his usual compliance (a shock to her system no doubt)

    ReplyDelete
  14. Well that was a fiery episode. Found I was quite enjoying hearing a bit of genuine anger and argument after months of rather wishy washy acting (not sure what that says about me!)

Can’t help wondering if this development has been engineered to provide a way out of Ambridge for the Fairbrothers.
Rex’s story has been going nowhere really since Anisha left.
And though Toby took a much more prominent role as Rosie’s father and successful Gin distiller I cant see what future there is for him - unless he and Pip are to become a proper couple rather than a pair of co/ habiting house mates who happen to take turns looking after their little girl.

    This could leave a gap
In the regular cast to be filled by who knows? - an exciting new character to shake things up? An ethnically correct family to move into the village?
But please, not another dodgy businessman or gossiping woman!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Rex’s excuse for not finally leaving with Anisha was that he felt he ‘belonged’ to Ambridge (although he was happy to follow her North for months on end, letting his goose business.go to pot). There are several practical solutions to the Hollowtree crisis - which will get chosen?

      Delete
  15. Yes, I thought the Fairbrothers might be written out.
Pip said to both that it was to expand Josh's egg business but Toby saw through it, so she changed tack saying it was for Rosie's sake as well.

    ReplyDelete
  16. They don’t BOTH have to go, do they? It’s not as if they’re joined at the hip!

    1. Of course not and they both might stay but they have both been given notice.

  17. There's no kindness in the David/Ruth branch of the family and very little humour. Pip seems to understand the position they've put Toby and Rex in and would, on her own, not have been party to it but there's a coldness about them. Great acting from Rex, Tobs and Pip I thought.

    ReplyDelete
  18. For all his marital problems and selfishness there's been a lot more love, consideration and tolerance shown by Brian and maybe Jennifer

    ReplyDelete
  19. Interesting thoughts about the Fairbrother Brothers.
My ideas + thoughts are similar, but not identical. These are:-
Toby - He will leave, regardless of being Rosie's dad, and his gin business, which tbh. is a relatively small enterprise. If it was more profitable and successful, he already have moved to larger premises, with some staff.
He knows that, Pip will always give him access and parental rights to his daughter.
Rex. He will stay, but he might to be able to re-locate the weaners business. Also, he is part of the Re-wilding project which I would think, will keep him in Ambridge. Then there is Bert in The Bungalow.
A strange point, but they seem to get along well, Rex helping Bert and Bert giving Rex a place to live - it's win win.
As I have intimated before, Rex is an eligible batchelor.
There are Ambridge females, well sort of.
Lily, Phoebe, or perhaps even Pip, spring to mind, but there must be others.

  20. I just now visited the BBC page to read the Agricultural Editor’s new article on Brookfield’s farming strategy, and tested the COMMENTS facility. It appeared to be working in that I was told my two comments had been posted and the figure 2 for the number of comments showed up, but not the actual comments. Instead there were two messages saying they were being double-checked. So I’ll return later to see whar’s happening. Would anyone else care to have a go?

    2. Perhaps "Aunty Beeb" has been spying here. It has realised that Ruthy + Gary, have maintained a wonderful site, with many loyal Archers listeners, who give great + interesting comments.
They want to admit, that how wrong they were, in closing the blog down.

  25. I have seen Maryellen + Archerphile, testing the new BBC "blog".
I am not tempted, definitely for a long while yet.
I do really hope though, it gets more commenting and sharing thoughts on it, rather than purely on social media, eg Facebook + Twitter.

  26. i'm going to do the Archers blog as much as I do this which is to read and learn and think a bit. I'm going to post what I said above and hope you don't feel I'm being disloyal. with love to you all and will read more soon xxx

  27. Thanks Maryellen, I haven't read the article properly, but will do later, I'm glad they're going back to posting about agriculture.

  28. I would never desert Gary as he has done so much for us on this blog and Ruthy before of course.
But I shall also use the new BBC one as an alternative to FB, simply to encourage the Beeb to keep it going.
I’m wondering if this new initiative is meant for listeners to comment on daily episodes though, or simply on articles the Beeb write on the site and are inviting feed back.
We shall see, after all this was a fairly academic article on agricultural changes and asked for comments on that, and not a particular episode.

    1. Good thought. It is surely a little too late, though. I doubt many actually, look at the web-site, nowadays.
If it is a test, then it needs to relate to the daily episodes also.
The other thought, it's a mistake.

    2. I suspect it will be like the old days of the BBC log before it petered out. We get regular new blogs headed by a topical article to get us started and then we talk about anything TA-related we fancy, often the daily episodes, just like this blog.

  29. Blooming cheek.
Were they waiting until they had my licence fee before they decided to bring back the blog?
Well I won't be using it.
I can't see the point of posting comments on two different blog sites.
This one suits me and it is where I hope to stay.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Gary has my loyalty for all that his does for this blog. Perhaps the BBC have realized they made a mistake in cancelling the original one but I don't feel like going to it.
I enjoyed hearing Rex getting angry with how he is being treated. It made a nice change and surely they are due a certain amount of notice before they have to leave.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I should have thought it ought to have been David who spoke to the Fairbrothers and handed them the notice to quit.
After all, he is their landlord, not Pip.
But then we don’t seem to hear much from David at all these days.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It was made clear in conversation that David was entirely supportive of the new dea. I expect Covid precautions limit the number of actors ‘on the go’ at any one time, which is why we only hear a few voices from week to week. The actor may be vulnerable on account of age etc and unable to come to the studio. He didn’t shine In the home recording I heard during lockdown!

  32. In answer to Lanjans query about why I want to comment on two blogs.....

Because it is very interesting to hear how other groups of listeners react to an episode, and read other opinions. I have always read and commented about The Archers on two blogs; first FB and the BBC blog, then FB and this one since it took over from the BBC one.
Often I have seen widely differing opinions on a particular plot line or performance which informs me how TA is coming across to different group of people. (e.g. the Ed/Emma break-up, thé arrival of Natasha, the re-wilding project)
Also the FB group has far more male contributors and professional farmers/police offices/ solicitors who can, and do, add to the diversity of opinion and offer technical explanations.

This blog is my favourite place though because we are much more intimate, know each other fairly well and are able to talk about other subjects on ‘the other side’.

Sean Connery - when I was a young Art House Film Fan and extremely snobbish, I was challenged to give ' commercial cinema' another chance, and taken to see a ' Bond'. I was hooked, and I'm pleased to say, relinquished my snobbish attitudes.

  33. Toby is not a particularly lovely person. There was a reason for his apparent calmness when Pipette was informing him of the ending of the the short term contract. He is lazy, skiving and even Rex, last time we heard, Castigated for lack of cleanliness In the gin palace. He simply doesn’t get his hands dirty, so he set Rex up to confront Pippy in a showdown. Rex is little brothers rescuer, isn’t that why they left Brighton?

  48. I agree Esscee..

I bet they want you to run the BBC blog, Gary like Basia says
They have had their spies out.
They know this is a success .
They probably like the format -two blogs
Nobody else wants to do it.
They know that the blog is a help to us during this depressing time
They like the idea of Desert Island Discs
    Five of the best
    etc
    Esther Rantzen is probably involved.
She will like the fact that we are there for each other when things are difficult.
Pierre and I will write a book about folk in their 80s who only feel in their 70s because of the blog.

    My suggestion.
When they offer you the job tell them you have heard that people called Gary get a mega salary!!

I haven't commented on the BBC blog but I did look and as far as I could see there is only one person who is not at the moment on our blog* so I don't really see that people are going to get a different perspective by contributing to both but in fairness it is early days and they may get more takers.
*I suspect that another might have changed her nom de plume
If I am wrong then I apologise.

    It is all very exciting.

  53. I don’t follow why Ruth jumped to the conclusion that whoever smashed the padlock on the field gate to gain entry were treasure hunters. Why would treasure hunters, presumably using a metal detector, need to take a vehicle into the field? Or was the field perimeter too barb-wired to climb over? Or am I being dim?

Of course, we know who in Ambridge has a metal detector used for that purpose. Ruth has told us twice. (Hurray, have managed to copy over from BBC blog!)

  54. 57. I wonder if we could refer to this blog as the TOP blog (short for The Othe Place, as Ah Um recently called it) or just TOP? (Incidentally, the RSC calls its Stratford studio theatre TOP, also short for ‘the other place’.). Just a thought! 🙂

To copy & paste ( I can only do it on an Apple device, eg an iPad):
Double tap at the beginning of the sentence you to want to copy
A blue box appears on the first word & you drag it to the end of the sentence or paragraph.
A line appears at the top of the page with various options eg, copy, paste, attach photo etc.
Tap on ‘copy’ and it will be saved.
Then in the new document, go to the place where you want to insert your saved bit. Double tap, chose ‘paste’ and the words will be inserted,.

I tried to do this from the Beeb blog last night, but it didn’t seem to work. The blue box wouldn’t appear.
Maybe the BBC have fixed it so you can’t copy things from their sites?
    I’ll try again later.

  59. Thanks very much indeed for your advice, Archerphile - I did manage to copy across from the BBC yesterday (my 5.17 post incriminating Eddie Grundy) using my iPad but more by luck than judgment. I didn’t know about the double tap so must have done it accidentally. It was very frustrating trying to drag the blue blob along the text to be inserted so I don’t think I’ll be doing it very often! I might try it in reverse, from here to there....

  60. Will the new lockdown to be imposed on Thursday affect the recording of The Archers? Just as we were beginning to get back to more ‘normal’ episodes will the cast have to revert to recording their parts at home, under the stairs and a duvet? I do hope not.

Ha! It worked! I copied this from the Beeb blog where I listed it last night. Think I either didn’t tap hard enough, or was too impatient, but it did work,

  61. Posted on outside Ambridge by mistake
    BBC TA blog
The latest one where we have been commenting has disappeared!
Well at least it has on my computer!
I believe it was tagged as real world but I can't find it there either.
Any suggestions as to what has happened?

    1. Just looked again and found the article by the Agricultural consultant listed just as an article, not a blog.
Was it because we all went on there mentioning the Archers' Fan Blog I wonder?

  62. No suggestions as to what’s happened, Spicycushion, but suggests the site is worryingly volatile or. even more worrying, it was an administrative mistake. Personally I don’t think it was due to content.

So please don’t go away, Gary! (And good luck for this evening!)

  63. Yes, the blog is gone, it was structured differently to the previous ones, as for replies. At least we managed to make contact with Soz and advise her how to join us.

    1. That was a flash in the pan, alas! The article is now with other Features and a different layout, no Comments facility. So probably an administrative mistake. Still, as Basia says, at least it reunited us with Soz and Ah Hum (and make the acquaintance of Mildred).

    2. Thank goodness you spotted the opportunity to blog on bbc site and people were quick to help me get through to this blog. Gary you might have a chance to ask what happened when you speak tonight.

    3. Does anyone know who Ah Hum was/is?

    4. Ah Um joined in with the protests when they were closing the BBC blogs. When first here I asked what had happened to Parsley and Ah Um, and Parsley replied she had made it here but there was no answer from Ah Um so I thought she hadn't made it. Nice to know you have been lurking Ah Um. I lurked on the BBC blog for quite some time before feeling I ought to become vocal and supportive when it was threatened with closure.

  65. I looked at it at about ten this morning, and the last post was Archerphile last night. I didn't try to post anything though.
Spiceycushion reports that it's gone by 12.28, so late this morning it was changed and presumably removed.
    A trainee responsible perhaps.

  66. Oh Gosh, hope it wasn’t me attempting to copy and paste! I manage to do that this morning, perhaps it wasn’t approved of?

    3. That's really funny Archerfile. I wonder where you might have copied and pasted it to?!

  67. You should remember that the BBC must never admit that they have done something wrongly. To have allowed a blog with comment ability to return would be an admission of their shoddy performance previously.

    1. How it usually works is to carry on without admitting the mistake until the managers responsible for making it have moved on, when their successors will revert to the earlier situation and claim it as a brilliant new idea. The process typically takes 10-15 years.

  68. Thanks to Maryellen we were there like a shot and almost the only ones, apart from Mildred and ah hum, they seemed to know each other. I don't remember either but perhaps they changed names. The blog was different from the start as the number of posts didn't show before opening it, so I agree that it was there by mistake, still, we had a bit of fun.

  69. I was about to ask, where is the new BBC Archers blog. I looked for it this morning, whilst I was having my morning coffee. I couldn't find it, and now I know why.
    Oh well. 😣

  70. Dying to hear what happens with Gary’s phone call from the BBC tonight
Perhaps he is going to get told off for us writing on the (brief) Archers blog.
We’ve been very naughty and must be punished, 😂

  72. Just got off a long phonecall with a delightful woman from The Archers production team - I daren't say TOO much at the moment, but it's potentially very, very exciting! It's a bit dependant on travel restrictions later in the year on the actual logistics of it, but I CAN say that it involves the 70th Anniversary celebrations. I will post more info when things are confirmed I and am allowed to speak about it! (How mysterious....)

  73. I am not liking that the LL Trustees, have now become quite prominent.
My question is why now - and not when Freddy was arrested, convicted, sentenced and then served this,in a Young Offenders Institution?
Surely he has reformed, with no further misdameanors, and has changed his life.
    I do not understand this.

How exciting for you Gary and I’m keeping fingers crossed that wretched Covid doesn’t mess things up, whatever they are!

  79. How exciting Gary. My guess is a documentary fronted by Clare Balding.
They like these - Desert Island Discs have done a few over the years.

Not much to celebrate tonight, what a load of horse manure.

  80. Very intriguing Gary. Can’t wait to hear more.

Think I actually prefer Lyndas Christmas palaver to this Freddie debacle. Never thought I’d say that!!!
Get back on to the Welsh wazzock story.......we want him in jail for Christmas.

  81. Cogratulations Gary. I'm looking forward to hearing more.

  82. I am waiting; in eager anticipation, for Lynda to help Freddy.
Freddy will take the accolade for the Christmas LL event, as the producer. This will silence the trustees, but it will be another Lynda Ambridge Christmas production, again.
Lily (plus Russ) will try to muscle in, but it will be Freddy + Lynda who manage it.
They have a lovely bond together.

And Shula speaks once again. Good that some of the old characters are gradually being brought back.
