If he is convicted the house will be impounded as it is the proceeds from a crime and any victims can be compensated. This is from my legal adviser, Katy!

    Basia - December 30, 2020 at 7:31 PM
He told Gavin it was mortgaged to the hilt, but I hear the property prices have gone up...

    Basia - December 30, 2020 at 7:29 PM
It was obvious Freddie was winding up Elizabeth about Bernard. In the end the two main participants withdrew in order to give him a chance to exert himself, a bit like making up for his failed LL tour.
As for Kirsty, I don't understand why the police rang her to find out about Gavin and especially Philip, they bailed him with a condition not to return to Ambridge, so they must have an address, anyway, that's their job.

    Spicycushion - December 30, 2020 at 7:38 PM
Oh I really dislike Freddie's squeaky and whining voice!

    maryellen - December 30, 2020 at 7:47 PM
I think he’s got Henry Archer Syndrome - sounds more juvenile than he is!

    Spicycushion - December 30, 2020 at 7:59 PM
Was that another porky-pie from Pip who said she couldn't do anything about Rex being evicted? I seem to remember that she readily agreed with her parents and Josh?

  2. And a shameless plug for my appearance on Radio 4 on The Archers 70th Anniversary Quiz!

(And no saying that I LOOK like Plug from the Bash Street Kids....)

  4. Lovely photo Gary - so nice for those of us who couldn’t go to the meet -ups to be able to see you. I think you should hand out signed photos to all your fans!

I enjoyed tonight’s offering. Kirsty, thankfully not falling apart but settling in with Phoebe and Roy and finding kindness and support ( seem like a nice little family already!)
And Freddie, triumphing, on his own, without seeking help from Linda. Well done Freddie. Perhaps he has found his niche at last....organising events at LL. (and best of all, without any interference from Russ)
But agree that his squeaky voice is very annoying, sounds like a young teenager whose voice is just breaking!

    1. I heartily agree about this episode, AP. Phoebe and Roy are doing a great job in boosting Kirsty. Kirsty is due a bit of good fortune after the let-downs she's experienced. Well done Freddie ! (and his ever supportive Mum)

No doubt we have something of great magnitude on the cards for Friday - 10yrs since Nigel’s untimely demise where have those years gone!

Great photo Gary 👏🏻 I have printed off my questionnaire catch you down at “The Bull” Friday night - socially distanced of course. If my scare is poor I shall be able to proclaim I couldn’t hear the questions clearly enough 🤣

  6. We’ve had topic-led, character-led, and actor-led storylines - but rarely a property-led storyline, and now, if Miriam guesses correctly, we may have one with the Mosses’ Beechwood house. Miriam favours the Aldridges as possible buyers, but remembering how Mrs A turned her nose up at living on an estate, I think not. Personally I favour Helen, as Kirsty suggested, but even more, the Button family. They have always fascinated me and I treasure the occasional reference to them. I feel they have been waiting in the wings for far too long - so may 2021 be the Year of the Buttons!

And on that note - Happy New Year to one and all!

  12. Regarding Celebrities and Charities.......
I decided three years ago that we did not need all the outdoor clothing we had accumulated.
I had worn my best wool winter coat only a few days during the year and although I really loved it (and really now regret giving it away) I decided it had to go.
I telephoned our local MPs headquarters because I knew my MP was a patron of a local homeless Charity and asked where I should take the garments.
The person answering the phone was unable to help me and was surprised that I had asked .She told me that a patron of a Charity was just required to go to meetings and Dinners
Another well known actress Dame is or was a patron of a Charity I supported and I was told that she sometimes looked in and I think she may have opened their Summer Fair.
Where I used to live our local celebrity was Jean Alexander.
    She was a lovely lady.
    Nothing like Hilda Ogden.
When they were thinking of closing the local hospital she went incognito to all the meetings which she sat through quietly .
She then approached my Dr son and suggested he should push her through the town on a bed to bring awareness of what "they" planned to do.
They didn't close the hospital and she actually died there.

A good episode and very happy for a well deserving Tracy. Jazzer has a good heart.
Re Freddie - I think he has a good, distintive voice. It's very necessary on radio and he sounds just as he should be, energetic, keen to please, and laddish.
Adam has tried to do the same with his voice, it sounds petulant and whiny a lot of the time but it's distinctive. We know who he is. xx

  22. How pleasing to read your thoughts Janet. - 11.34

I agree with your analysis of Freddie's voice, and too about Adam.
I had attempted to write something similar after reading the comments from others about Freddie's voice, but abandoned my attempt.
I am pleased someone else recognises the qualities the actor brings to the character.
I actually enjoy hearing that voice, although less so Adams.
When Freddie is low, or anxious that emotion is carried so convincingly in his voice.
When he is triumphant as he was having achieved this years Ambridge Christmas Show, he is utterly convincing.
Such light and shade is indeed the prime ability of good acting, and as you say, so very distinctive and necessary for radio.

    1. You and Janet are quite right about Freddie’s voice.
I was one who complained about its squeakiness the other night. But it’s true, it does convey his excitement and enthusiasm, just as previously he sounded so guilty and crushed when speaking with Linda in hospital. In fact, he is a damn good actor and I shouldn’t have complained.
On the other side we haven’t heard from a rather poor young actor (in my opinion) for some time - one Tom Archer of Bridge Farm. He could learn a lot from Freddie.

    2. Good acting? Freddie Pargetter? I don’t think so! All Ambridge’s other young males are better than him.

    Omg. Kirsty. I’m horrified.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Gary, the Quiz was wonderful, and it sounded such fun!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I wasn't altogether surprised at the arrest of Kirsty.
She has lived with Philip and Gavin for some time, and I would think it Police Policy to arrest a co habitee of a suspect in any serious case, on the grounds that they must know the truth of what has been going on. And the fact that she reported the alleged crime, would not rule her out as a suspect. She might have done so as a foil to her own association with the crime.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Does Kirsty’s arrest mean that Usha will be heard soon. Kirsty’s arrest seems to be for dramatic effect, I can’t see how the police can have grounds for arrest unless Philip told an awful lot of lies to implicate her. They wouldn’t need to arrest her to bring her in for questioning.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I suppose from the police point of view, it's reasonable to assume Kisrty was in on the act. Perhaps they *have* rescued Blake and co and one of them said something that inadvertently implicated her. Or perhaps they have caught Mr Moss and he has decided to drag her down with him.

In real life, I wonder how easy it would be to be a slave master and keep your partner completely in the dark. Probably far too easy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. At least everyone finished the episode still breathing and with the right number of limbs and internal organs.

(OMiaS nearly didn't - he tried to call me for dinner halfway through the episode! Fortunately the food remained hot and I was able to listen to the Quiz on catch-up.)

  43. I have just compared answers to the quiz with my TA loving sister (the other two couldn't care less!)

We decided that there was 1 point for every part of each question, so the total of the quiz was 28. So when it asked for the 3 things needed to fertilise the ground it was worth 3 points. Likewise Helen's 2 cheeses was worth 2 points.
My sister got 12 and I got 17. I have been listening 10 years longer than her though!

As the quiz was worth , in my adding up, 28 points, to win with 27, Gary, is astounding! Hearty congratulations!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Thanks for your analysis of the points system Spicey.

  46. I don't seem to have done too well.
Adding up the points I seemed to get 11, but I'm not sure that I wrote all answers down.

  48. Can I admit now that I was disappointed with the 70th Anniversary episode?
We were told beforehand that there was going to be a life changing event in the village, so was that Lynda getting an MBE or Kirsty getting arrested?
I didn’t want a death à la Nigel’s fall but I was expecting something a bit more exciting; a runaway tractor demolishing part of the Bull or a lightening strike setting fire to the Village Hall or a similar big event.
I feel curiously deflated and only the Quiz with our Gary seemed a suitable celebration of my 70 yrs listening.

    1. It was a bit strange but I did laugh out loud when Tracey said " It wasn't a very good kiss either" or wtte!
Will the police think that Kirsty is trying to frame Phillip so she can be with Roy (considering she has moved in with him.)
Have they connected Kirsty with the firm because she did some of the book work for Phillip?
Is Phillip trying to frame Kirsty to wriggle out of it?
Might be a bit exciting in the next couple of weeks! 🤞

      Delete
    2. I'd forgotten about the book work, Spicy. Good point.
Can she prove she never saw the bank statements showing the money hadn't gone out? Or did Big Bad Phil arrange to have the money paid into different accounts?

Less convinced about the Roy angle. The police have told her she can't enter her own home until they've finished searching it. She needs to live somewhere in the meantime. And as Ambride remains a Covid-free haven it would be foolish to go anywhere further afield.

(But then I've been wrong on most of my predictions recently so you'll probably prove to be spot on!)

      Delete
  49. I'm with Archerphile, a little deflated as the trails suggested life changing events.
The individuals that I've known here and there throughout my life, have not seemed to me to have had their lives changed by getting their MBE or OBE.
In fact the one person I've known over recent years died the week before Christmas.
In a local care home, incontinent and with dementia.
And I don't suppose that any of the care assistants looking after her cared one way or the other about her 'gong'.

And I do think Linda's award was perceived to be the life changing event.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Could David and Kenton being nice to each other be Ambridge’s life-changing event, and the strapline’s bit about one resident makes a special announcement referred to Lynda’s MBE?? (Not someone going off into the sunset as I’d anticipated!)

      Delete
    2. Scrub that - I reread the straplinee and the word is crisis.. The nearest thing to a crisis was Kirsty and Roy making an unnecessary and undignified fuss on the pavement. It hardly compares with 10 years ago!

      Delete
    3. Maryellen, I also thought of someone going off into the sunset but it was Lynda's MBE.
As for the crisis, I think it means Ambridge becoming aware that they had a slave driver in their midst.
The highlight for me was Tracy and Jazzer pretending that nothing happened but I think it has, they just don't want to admit it to themselves.

      Delete
    4. I agree, Basia, about Tracy and Jazzer! Definitely a spark there!

    5. I thought Tracy’s cooment on Jazzer’s kiss technique revealed the secret of his notable lack of success with women!

  50. A bit of a damp squid! I can’t see that the police would have a sufficient case to arrest Kirsty so it was almost laughable. It was more likely as KP nuts said that they would take her in for questioning and an arrest could follow if they weren’t satisfied. Linda’s MBE is a bit far fetched as well as what has she done to deserve it? Come to think of it though with knighthoods for tax exiles, the honours seem to be given away with the cornflakes!

Gary, you and your team did do well! I enjoyed the quiz and dinner was late last night as a consequence!😊😉🥂

    1. Ev, I was wondering what Lynda’s MBE was ‘for’ too. Did we hear the citation?
I can’t remember, services to amateur drama perhaps?
Surely these medals aren’t awarded just because friends and neighbours think you are a good egg. Goodness, she didn’t even do lollipop duties outside the school, when there was one! Surely it has to be for more than chivvying the village into performing a pantomime or saving a butterfly whose field is threatened by development?

  51. Enjoyed the quiz .
    Well done Gary.
Re Lynda-what a load of rubbish.
Was she being given the MBE because she had had a bad accident?
Would she have been nominated for an award had the fire not happened?
    I doubt it.
    As for Kirsty .
I think Phillip must have set her up .
Her arrest seems far fetched to me too.
Gavin will come to her rescue .

  52. Yes Lanjan I think Gavin will be put in a position where he has to choose who to support. Also I was surprised how aggressive the police officer was who arrested Kirsty - innocent until proved guilty??

  54. I assume that Lynda’s MBE would have been awarded for “ service to the community “ although as Archerphile said coercing people into her shows and conservation projects, were not entirely for the benefit of the community, or am I being a bit harsh? I have always enjoyed listening to her as a character.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Lynda did also run the speed limit campaign and wasn't she against the re-routing of the main road/bypass whatever it was when Brookfield was threatened with being halved? She has also campaigned against Brookfield, was it the something digester? In fact if there was a campaign to be undertaken it was either Kirsty or Lynda who were the go to figures whenever there was a social issue to be sorted. I like her and she has come across as a kind-hearted person and quite intelligent enough to organise, cajole and bring together disparate members of the community. Quite diplomatic most times.
Kirsty has already given a statement to the police so logically something else has come up which links her to Phillip's business practices. Also it seems to have happened after Phillip has been released on bail? Good job Kirsty has been looking for a solicitor. Although she won't be needing one for a divorce for twelve months but for a criminal investigation much sooner.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I have to say that I didn’t realise it was possible to nominate someone for an award for general services to a village, I always assumed it had to be for something specific eg aforementioned lollipop duties or running a dinner club for pensioners for many years. And even then, the award is usually a BEM, not an MBE, so Lynda has been lucky.
(But at least she didn’t get it for driving a racing car! 😂)

Wonder which royal will be heard awarding the medal at an investiture ceremony?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I wonder who would have nominated Lynda for the award. Robert? Is that how the system works? I've never thought that much about it but now do question the process.
Tracy and Jazzer were funny, denying any chemistry between them. It would be nice for their friendship to develop into something deeper.
Kirsty will be cleared and Gavin will help her.

  62. The Omnibus, always gives a different thought.
    Todays one was:-
Kirsty spent Christmas at Roy's. She didn't want to, and did not do, the Lower Loxley show (a stomach upset?) and was reluctant to go to the New Years Day, Round Ambridge quiz.
My thought is - where was Joy? She lives (or should that be lived), next door to Kirsty + Philip. She would have seen the police activity, heard Roy shouting and all that went on that night. How has she not gossiped about this, along with the thought of potential problems, between Mr. + Mrs Moss. This is along with the fact that, the house has supposedly been searched, by the police.

To end. I really loved the Anniversary Quiz, listened to on Sat. (via Sounds, whilst eating breakfast).
Well Done, Gary G. ..You did yourself really proud, and I loved hearing your accent and background laughs! Hopefully, it was as fun, as it sounded.

I did well, which really surprised me. I only got 2 questions wrong. These were the bread one + Jim's, plus a half one - the year of the LA Olympics.

I still don't know how I knew, that the Argentina one, was Nelson Gabriel!
Some were guesses though eg The Wanderer's -but these were just logical...
My easiest question was the garden chemical elements..but that's just my background.

But too, you listen to TA with a great deal more attention than some of us, in particular me !

  67. Gary - perhaps I should warn you that I gave you and our Archerfan blogs a little promotion on the Archers FB Page. They posted an item about the Quiz and mentioned all of the team members by name.
So underneath, I wrote that you run our wonderful blogs and that they had been going since the BBC closed the official blogs and how great they are, enabling longer comments than on FB.
There have already been a couple of ‘likes’ so it’s possible we may get one or two new members.

    1. Perhaps he lived the 'lads?' He did have his own house but I don't think it was in Ambridge. I don't think the flat that the workers were kept in was in Ambridge either.

      Delete
    2. I'm pretty sure the flat that the ' boys' lived in was not in Ambridge.
This was one thought that continued to nag at my thoughts throughout this SL, as where it was situated was never mentioned by anyone, although it couldn't be that far from Ambridge as Gavin or Philip seemed able to get there and back with ease.
Another aspect that again always nagged at my consciousness was where Philip lived prior to actually moving into the house with Kirsty, again mysteriously, never mentioned.
I suppose these two unknown and untold facts were twitching around in my consciousness throughout, which kept me sceptical about Philip.
Please be assured folks, I am not pretending for one instant that I knew what was coming from way back, but I can say that these two particular facts, clearly kept from us, did alert me to the possibility of there being ' something in the woodshed '.

  75. I now understand why the BBC were heralding the 70thAnniversary episode as one that would have ‘life changing effects’ on the village.
So many residents were connected with the Mosses in one way or another and will now be horrified to learn that they were, in effect, employing slave labour, however unwittingly.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yes Archerphile, you have highlighted the point we were given over the Christmas period which when we heard last weeks episode confounded us all to the point of disappointment.
    Now we understand.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I don’t understand how it will change the lives of Ambridge residents in a material sense, apart from Justin Elliott. temporarily losing one of his business roles, to Brian Aldridge’s advantage. Brian apparently has no reservations about indirectly profiting from ‘slave labour’. It’s highly unlikely that anyone there who employs a workman will first carry out a private investigation into the nature of his workforce. So, like the coercive control storyline, it’s about changing awareness rather than habits.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I certainly enjoyed hearing Justin squirm around trying to save his job last night. He and Martin didn’t seem much worried about the employees though, only concerned about the effect that using slave labour would have on the reputation of Borchester Land..
I suppose that was to be expected though.
David, on the other hand, seems to have been completely horrified by the news, ready to throw himself on a sacrificial bonfire until calmed down by Ruth’s practical response.

  78. I wonder how Emma will feel when she realises that the playground refurbishment by the Mosses may have been was carried out by slave, especially as she made such a fuss of Philip and arranged interviews with the local paper. I think I remember that (either) Philip or Gavin were very reluctant to have their photo in the paper at the time.

    1. I expect wise words like Ruth’s will prevail over breast-beating reactions like David’s: wait and see what the law courts have to say before allocating blame in the community which includes Kirsty of course. It depends if you apply the ‘ignorance is no excuse’ precept or not.

Justin's firm is Demara, who projected Berrow Farm, and set it up - well so I thought.
What I can't work out is, how did he become involved with the BL board - so much so that, Martin has sent him packing.

Does Lilian still have her Ambridge Properties enterprise, or did Justin buy her out? Again, I can't recall, but thought not.

Looking forward to many clarifications. 😁

  81. Well I didn't like the way it went. Suddenly Neil is responsible for the bell tower, the playground and the contract at Berrow. Technically, Blake was responsible for the explosion because he lit the grill when dealing with an open flame. He was hungry and unsupervised, it's done, it doesn't matter much to Lynda now how and why it happened, she has her MBE to look forward to.

  82. Most alarming tone in the interview between police officer and our lovely ( innocent) Neil, I agree Basia.
But I think Maryellen brought to our attention the fact that this is an exercise in consciousness raising amongst the general public.

Looked at from the police point of view, Neil's involvement in each of the different jobs given to Moss, could be crucial, particularly in view of him Neil, being the Chair of the Parish Council.
So, from an investigative point of view, why shouldn't Neil be suspected as an enabler to Philip Moss ?
In reality my experience of serving on Parish Councils is that there is a wide variety of individuals serving, ensuring that there are a number of different experiences of life and varying professional expertise to draw upon.
Ambridge is a different world, and in meetings of Parish councillors in the real world someone with a cynical view of the world would have pointed out that giving one job after another at such an attractive financial rate, might raise questions of favouritism at the very least, if not actual suspicion of dodgy dealings.

In fact over the last three years I have been involved with two other councillors in questioning our parish council over a similar situation. Although I must say, there is no question of modern slavery, just questionable excessive, and possibly unnecessary, expenditure.

  85. I felt sorry for poor Neil, being interrogated like that with the implication that he knowingly used slave labour. Isn't it only natural to be pleased to get a low quote for work but I suppose now everyone should wonder how the price is so low? Then to maybe opt for the more expensive quote!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Some years ago, the concept of 'compulsory competitive tendering' was introduced. Many long-standing services providers, for example, school caterers, found their contracts axed because another firm could do it cheaper. Whether they could do it better, or sustain the cost difference in future years, was by the by. The cheaper firm got the contract.
It still goes on, perhaps more so in these cash-strapped days. Our local Women's Aid, serving the Borough for 40+ years, lost their contract to run the refuge homes to a bigger, London-wide organisation. No matter their reputation and involvement in the local community, or their local expertise and contacts. The other lot were cheaper.

In such a climate, Neil would probably have faced opposition had he gone for a higher quote. Particularly when such an upstanding supporter of the community was offering such a competitive price.

  86. Maryellen, yes Jim is awkward at times but I'd like to hear from him and see if he gloats.
Owias, I missed that about Eddie but naturally he'd condemn such practices in others.
The one who should have been alert was Ed, because Tim did some fencing for free at the vicarage and tried to gain his trust by doing so. Philip showed himself to the village by doing the playground. There is no such thing as a free lunch!

Mentioned was the fact that it was set up to educate farmers in modern production methods because of food rationing at the time. 91. It is now known, what Philip was up to This has only recently (lockdowns permitting) been fully revealed.
No-one knew, when Philip first appeared in Ambridge, mending the roof of The Hunt dog kennels, that he was not as seemed. He seemed an honest working chap, doing good work at a good price, quickly + efficiantly, and to complete satisafaction. Lilian was thrilled with her bathroom and she is quite meticulous as to details.
He soon won the confidence of the Ambridge community, and more work went his, and his now known team, way.

Why are the Ambridge folk now berating themselves. They knew nothing different, and just accepted, what seemed, an honest and capable builder, to do what they needed to be done. They also paid him in full, as to his bills.
There was nothing suspicious nor untoward, that Philip or Gavin, showed to the.paying.clients.

    1. Oh yes but it's just perhaps to enquire about Kirsty?
I noted that both Shula and Helen acted completely in character.
      i) Shula blabbing to Alan about Gavin's problem with gambling. Can't she keep anything confidential?
ii) Helen immediately turning it onto herself "I can't help feeling it was my fault." Everything just has to be about her!

      Delete
    2. I was thinking along the lines, Philip called for spiritual guidance and Shula failed him in his hour of need, so more to blame herself, it is a drama after all.

      Delete
    3. Basia..... that was my thought too.

  93. I, also, was annoyed with Helen’s attitude last night, ridiculously blaming herself over K &P’s wedding. As you say Spicy, with Helen it is always about *her*. What she might or might not have done, the effect on her friendships etc etc. Then poor Kirsty has to apologise to Helen for not contacting her and worrying that Helen might not be able to buy the Beechgrove house after all.

But though not a churchgoer or a believer myself, I did think Alan’s online sermon hit just the right note. It was reassuring that people should not blame themselves for being taken in by such as Philip. However I’m afraid I could not agree with the notion of praying for the devious slave employer, that he would come to see the error of his ways.
I doubt very much that will come to pass.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Indeed Archerphile. We heard Phillip explain his reasoning to Kirsty and he obviously saw nothing immoral in his behaviour. He justified it by saying that he gave them a roof over their head and food and entertainment! I suppose the slave owners of four hundred years ago also thought that way. The human dignity that everyone is entitled to seemed to pass over his own head! As you say, his seeing that his behaviour was/is totally unacceptable is doubtful.
On a different note I do wish that the SWs hadn't changed Oliver into such a doddering old fool. Since Caroline died he has morphed into someone whose good nature has been taken advantage of time and time again. First Tim Oatey, then Phillip Moss and of course The Grundys sitting pretty in a beautiful large house at much reduced rent! Even to getting involved in an 'Eddy scam!'
I can't remember what Oliver was when he was younger, (was it military?) but I doubt he became so wealthy if he had behaved then as he does now.
Caroline saw what the Grundys were like; a pity he didn't learn from her!

  95. What I don't know, and I hope some of you Archers experts can inform me. My thought is this:- Kirsty is now Mrs Philip Moss, so is she now liable for part of the massive mortgage of their Beechwood home?

  96. It is a good thing that modern slavery awareness is brought to listeners' attention but I just think that Alan's broadcast sounded like a government leaflet being read out.
Shula's reluctance to talk to Philip showed that she is not quite ready to be a priest, as surely it would be a priest's duty to speak to whoever is calling. Maybe the caller needs spiritual guidance/forgiveness which the priest is duty bound to provide.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Anneveggie, I agree with both your points, I felt that Alan was preaching, but that's his job.

    2. Not always, Anneveggie.
      a) 'Microsoft'
      b) 'Amazon'
      c) The 'homeless person' who has spun the same tale several times to multiple ministers in the area but who suddenly gets shirty when you try to find ways to help rather than just hand over money

And Shula is not Philip's vicar. Presumably he was trying to enlist her support as a friend - or to spin his side of the story to someone he hoped would be sympathetic. If he had wanted spiritual guidance he should have phoned Alan.

      Delete
  97. I think, Basia, that we all did think that Shula would fail, in anyone's hour of need.

  99. If Shula isn’t ready yet she never will be. Being a vicar is more than just preaching a nice sermon. They need to have an empathy for all who need them. In spite of Philip’s offences she should not have bypassed his call. She can’t confine her interactions just with nice people. I sound judgemental but being a vicar is far outside my capabilities but Shula does aspire to the position and should step up to the plate!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Another thing, Shula is a potential prosecution witness. Remember how strictly Helen's contact with family was policed after her arrest. Trainee vicar or no, she would still need to be cautious.

BTW even vicars are allowed time off duty, and to use answerphones. Philip could always have left a message. Then Shula would have had time to reflect and prepare herself before calling him back, or passing the message on to the police if necessary. Given the circumstances, I suspect this would be a wiser response than answering his call as soon as he rang.

      Delete
    2. I agree that it would have been best to not answer, get a message and then to have called Philip back, after some reflection.
But I suspect that the scene we heard between Shula and Alan, was designed to show us, as I think it showed Alan, ( if he needed to be shown ) that Shula is not made of the best material for the cloth.
Of course there is too as explained by Old W the potential for her to step up to the plate as a witness. If she does speak with Philip she may well be compromised.

      Delete
    3. Of course, Shula looked to *her* vicar for guidance. And got very little.
