Hooray for Kirsty. At last Lynda has had some comeuppance and then had it rubbed in
I did notice that Lynda managed a mention that she had been away to be awarded her MBE.Pompous and self aggrandizing at even the smallest chance. Let’s hope she has learned a lesson. ✌️

    Archerphile - December 17, 2021 at 1:56 PM
Yes, I picked up on that too Pierre.
Just to make sure Stella knew she had been awarded a gong.
    That really is bad form!

    Anneveggie - December 17, 2021 at 12:45 PM
At last Kirsty stood up to Lynda. It was about time and let's hope Lynda will realize a few things about herself now.

    Archerphile - December 17, 2021 at 5:12 PM
At long last, last night there was mention of Vince having problems at the abattoir due to lack of staff
And Stella actually spoke about problems at Berrow because they cannot get the pigs processed and will have to cull them on the farm
TA catches up with an important farming story that’s been going on for months.
(i do know it’s partially due to scripts being written weeks in advance, but a story that affects several characters in Ambridge could have been mentioned sooner I think)

    AmbridgesMrsP - December 17, 2021 at 5:36 PM
Heads up for next weeks ‘Feedback’
Kirsty will be telling the world what she really thinks about Lynda Snell.

    AmbridgesMrsP - December 17, 2021 at 5:42 PM
Maryellen - your last point about Stella.
That was my reference to the clue being in Weaver, and Mia barking up the wrong tree.
Sigourney Weaver being a lesbian icon.

  2. Please forgive me if I'm repeating myself but who on earth would enjoy working in an abbatoir? What particular qualities would one need to possess to do that job? A shortage of workers doesn't surprise me as I'm surprised they can get anyone to do it.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The shortage is due to so many EU workers having gone back to their own countries post-Brexit and very few British workers having the stomach for the job!

There are lots of jobs that British workers don’t want to do, like picking vegetables in a cold, wet, muddy field. I suppose it is because we have had foreign workers to do these jobs for so long that our own youth cannot contemplate having to undertake such uncomfortable occupations. Much prefer to sit in front of a computer I suppose, and who can blame them?

  3. Although many characters missing, or popping in now + again, I am missing Joy.
She I thought, would be well involved with The Mysteries, and could give Linda a run for her money.

    ReplyDelete
  4. To add, Why is Pat so obsessed with clearing all the clutter out of Tom's old bedroom?
Why can't Tom + Natasha go into Helen's room, now that she + her boys have moved out - or is that just too easy.

    ReplyDelete
  5. To add - I am not liking one iota, this Ambridge build up to Christmas, as it is revolving around Linda's ego...
When was the usual Green Christmas festive lights switch on, the making of Christmas Puddings + Cakes, along with mentions of festive nights in The Bull, Advent + traditional Carol services etc. Have these been mentioned in passing, so I have missed the normal Ambridge Christmas events...

  6. Ugh!
    What an awful, awful episode,
I don’t thing I can bear one more episode of listening to Lynda acting like a martinet, bullying the staff (Kirsty) into doing her dirty work, playing tricks to get what she wants and sweeping all before her like some modern day Boudicca!

And then Usha and Alan having a right barney because he is too busy to admire her Christmas decorations, what does she expect of a Vicar with several parishes to serve at Christmas time?
Is this all that Usha has been brought back into the cast for, to row with Alan and walk out on him at Christmas?

I thought the storyline and the scriptwriting tonight was very poor.
And Lynda is becoming an unbearable character !

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes indeed. I had never thought of Usha before as someone who would be so stroppy. I realise we are living in more modern times but I can remember the days when being a vicar's wife was very similar to being a farmer's wife, and the former helped with things like running children's groups, cooking for fetes and everything else, and the farmer's wife helped with whatever needed doing on the farm. It was accepted that by marrying a man doing that kind of work it became your vocation as well.
I think vicars nowadays have an impossible amount of work to do, caring for several churches and their congregations, and I have known two incredible vicars who regarded anyone in need of help, not just their congregations, as their responsibility to help.
I think Usha was being very petty and unreasonable.

    2. Janice, it will be interesting to hear OWiaS's take on this, but my experience has been that times have changed. My present lady Rev is single, but until now the wife of every incumbent I've worked with has had her own full-time job as well as chipping in with the traditional background stuff, helping with the Sunday School, making pavlovas for functions, or wherever else her own personal abilities could contribute - or not, as in one particular case. Mind you, he was a very strange individual who I think probably wouldn't have wanted his wife too close to some of his activities.

      Delete
    3. When we moved here, OWiaS made the mistake of seeing a job that needed to be done but wasn't, and did it. 'Tis intersting how many people are quite happy to put up with something not being done at all but, when someone does actually do it, will have plenty of views on how it ought to be done better ...
By virtue of my inefficiency, several of those early jobs have since been shed. So now I'm in charge of the toddler groups and other children's work including, since this year, our very small Sunday school. Since 2020 I have actually been paid, yahay!
Oh yes, I answer the vicarage phone a lot (we don't have a staffed church office). At one stage I think I knew the first names of all the local funeral directors.
I refuse to have anything to do with flower arranging or catering!

Increasingly, vicar's spouses tend to have paid employment outside the church, so it is harder for the congreagtion to treat them as an unpaid member of the clergy. When I was growing up, the vicar's wife came on Sundays, was a member of the drama group, and did nowt else. Her argument was that she was Jo Bloggs, not The Vicar's Wife. Most of us seem to find some middle ground between the two.

Yes, OMiaS is ridiculously busy at present. But so am I. So we tend to share the grumpiness between us : )

  7. Well!! A guest appearance from Usha in order for her to be writen straight out again. I assume that was her Archers swan song. At least she got one most are just never heard of again.
I suspect Alan will end up like The Vicar of Dibley and have 3 Christmas dinners 🤣
Also will The Mysteries have any audience - the whole village appears to be in it be way or another now!

    1. She sounded different to me. Or was that simply that she's been absent for so long that I've forgotten what she sounds like?

  8. I remember Usha ‘going all peculiar’ when she was rejected for the cricket team because she couldn’t handle the ball - which she couldn’t, but she chose to regard it as a racist snub. So her character has a history of poor treatment by the scriptwriters! I’m surprised at Amy, though.

    ReplyDelete
  9. It was indeed an awful episode for all the resons given above. It was a waste of 15 minutes of my life which is not retrievable. I do not keep up with who the script writers are but i am convinced that whoever was "responsible?"for last night's travesty should be encouraged to join a queue at their local labour exchange.

  10. Well,I’m back again it seems, after having been locked out again.

  11. I too really disliked last nights episode.
Dreadful dreadful Lynda, bullying Kirsty and yet again getting her own way regardless of any one else’s needs or opinions, and then gleefully reiterating how important she is.
Lynda has become a thorn in the side of the Archers as well as it’s listeners, and then to cap it all, Usher returning only to flounce off in a huff, and not even a legitimate huff !

Who was responsible for this very unpleasant episode.
I sincerely hope this situation does not continue throughout the week.

    2. Sarnia says: surely we all get days, weeks or sometimes longer periods which could be described as 'unpleasant episodes'? I know I do, but unfortunately there is never a named scriptwriter for me to blame.
Ambridge obviously has its rough patches like everywhere else. We'll have to wait and see how it all pans out.

    3. I was rather hoping that Keri Davies would be writing the Christmas episodes.

  13. Even as silly as Susan can be, surely she would not care so much about making 'an entrance' and being jealous of Lily. Clarrie had the right attitude towards her pettiness.
I agree with others that Usha was unnecessarily unpleasant to her husband. What a nasty piece of work.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I was also very surprised and disappointed in the way both Usha and Amy treated Allan. After all these years together, they must be aware of the many pressures on him over Christmastide. At least Usha told Allan she loved him in her parting shot.

    3. OWiaS I had to chuckle at your remark. Console yourself with the thought that Christmas services mean a lot to regular attenders especially if they live alone. We haven't got midnight mass this year and I shall miss it, but I'm sure in that lovely untouched Ambridge world Alan will manage to hold one.

  15. I am only listening to the Sunday Omnibus these days, so my next catch up will be on Boxing Day, but this will be probably be much later via Sounds, sadly.
How I wish for a real traditional Ambridge Christmas episode, with a Church Service along with the bells ringing out, Carols being sung, and all just wishing each other:-
    Happy Christmas to every-one.

  16. The script writers have been watching too much vicar of Dibley!!

  17. I don't think Usha is a nasty piece of work, but I was certainly pretty shocked at her attack on Alan. And it seemed to have come from nowhere, no run up to it, no hints of discourse between them.
It just seemed very strange to me.
And although Maryellen has reminded us that Usha has form, even so, it did seem out of character.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I am fed up with Susan’s attitude to her role in the play and her so called (but non- existant) helping Clarrie with the with the costumes.
And is Neil involved in the play, or is he too busy culling pigs at Berrow?

    2. Not so sure about that Mrs P - I reckon Susan’s kindness in letting Lily take the best costume will have a sting in the tail. I think she was up to something, not sure what yet, but there has to be a reason why she suddenly changed her mind about what she wanted to wear!

  21. As Ev said earlier, there is a good side and a bad side to everyone,, and I’ve seen more evidence of Susan’s good side than her bad one. But it’s her bad side that gets listeners going, so an easy way for the scriptwriters to achieve a result. Personally, I blame the editor!

  27. Did anyone listen to the first of the Mystery Plays this afternoon?
I did, not because I really wanted to listen to a Mystery Play ( not my religion) but to hear how all the Abridge characters performed in their roles.

I think Brian Blessed had stolen David Archers role, at least he was so loud and shouty, that’s what it sounded like. I found I couldn’t really follow the story because I was constantly trying to work out who was taking each part - not easy when most of the cast took 2 roles.

Not my type of entertainment at all, I’m afraid and I ended up hoping, fervently, that Ambridge returns to a traditional Panto next Christmas - preferably without any input from Lynda Snell!

  29. I did listen to the Mystery Plays and agree with Archerphile's comment about a shouty Brian Blessed like performance from David. I found the whole thing entertaining but somehow strange.

Sorry but Rory (or the actor who plays him) sounded wooden yesterday. He sounded as if he was reading his lines with no feeling or as if he felt awkward about saying them.

  30. This morning, I started to listen to The Ambridge Mystery Nativity play.
I thought that it was extremely well acted, in that it was great to hear the cast, in differing ways.
I thought Mia was a true revelation, as was David + Lilian.
Jazzer amused me when he appeared as a King, out of breath saying something like "I have just been shepherding so give me a break".
I admit though - that I got bored with it all, so I didn't listen to the entire performance.
An hour was far too long and too much.
I will not be listening to the Passion Play. I still don't understand as to why this is for New Year, as surely it should be kept for Easter. 🐣🐇🌷 with hot cross buns..

I suppose we’ll never hear who her two extra attendants were or how their costumes were rustled up, but my guess is Emma and Poppy - and we know Susan is a dab hand at last minute alterations. But coincidentally I was listening to an old play by Dick Francis on Sounds the other day which featured many Archers actors including both Molloys, Terry and Philip, Pat Archer, Sid Perks and Pusscat’s ‘ Tiger’, playing a crook with an unmistakable voice.

I suggest she confides in Alan.

What Alice did was despicable but now R has stooped to her level without the dependence on drink to use as a reason for his behaviour. At the time because of the drink Alice’s true feelings came out regarding how badly learning of her father’s adulterous behaviour resulting in a baby and a boy at that had shocked and hurt her and made her jealous of R and insecure in herself? Quite a situation all round and to be a slow burning SL I feel.

Oliver played Fairy Godfather when Roy couldn't be Judas in the Plays because he had arranged to be with his family.in Birmingham at the time. When Mike proposed staying to paint the bungalow for beer money, he told Ruth that Roy would put him up (whether he'd already consulted Roy, I don't know).

  46. The writer of the Guardian’s ‘A Month in Ambridge’ column thinks Stella is gay, based on the same reference to Weaver as a possible name for a dog that Mrs P quoted earlier on this blog.

I can think of two other reasons for choosing Weaver (1) after one of last year’s national icons, Jackie Weaver, who opened the Ambridge Summer Fete, and (2) after Kester Woodseaves, the Shropshire weaver-cum-hero of Mary Webb’s Precious Bane. Like me, Stella might have been an avid reader who read the novel in her teens after finding it among the books that belonged to previous generations - and like me, fallen in love with its hero.

Well yes, (2) is a bit unlikely, more than a bit. In fact. But, whatever its origin, I think Weaver is an excellent name for. a dog! I hope it’s a Jack Russell, my favourite.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Thanks Maryellen.
Good to know that I wasn’t alone in my prediction.
We may never find out the reason for ‘weaver’, or indeed whether Stella is gay, or not.
We may speculate ( I did ) ( and not for the first time have I privately thought that she might be) but why should we speculate ?
I look forward to a time when society accepts without question or speculation wherever anyone might be on a continuum of sexual orientation even though I am doubtful that I myself might ever be able to accept the ultimate continuum of gender fluidity.
Many younger people already do so.

As far as Stella’s dog is concerned, I have no preference for the breed.
Just get a dog Stella, call it Weaver, and be happy !

    ReplyDelete
  48. Maryellen, did I quote ?

I hadn’t read the Guardian article, it was just my speculation.
And I hadn’t heard it anywhere else either. But as soon as she mentioned the film and Sigourney Weaver the connection was there.
Incidentally I’ve never seen the film, but I do clearly remember the interest in S W role in it within my circle of lesbian friends and acquaintances at the time.

Not picking a fight, I hope you understand, just clarifying.

    1. Hello Mrs P - I’m afraid I was using ‘quote’ loosely. The Guardian feature only appeared yesterday, so if anything, the columnist was quoting you! Though more likely FaceBook, I imagine.

      Delete
  49. There has been quite a bit of speculation about Stella on FB’s Ambridge Addicts site too. Many people suggesting the name of Weaver is referring to Sigourney Weaver, a actress who is,
apparently, a gay icon (whatever that means)
Also, believe it or not, the fact that Stella invited Ruth for a drink and her seeming coolness to Usha when she joined Ruth (? Jealousy of Ruth already having a female friend!) and other incidences that I find very unconvincing.

This may be the SWs deliberately stirring up speculation of course and no doubt we shall learn more about Stella in future.
Personally I’m not in the slightest concerned about her personal preferences, only about her efficiency as a farm manager.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I absolutely agree with you, Archerphile. Personally, I’d like to know what Stella is doing about Adam’s beloved herbal leys!

The speculative Stella/ Ruth relationship (which the Guardian columnist also mentioned, though not the Usha bit) may be a more common scenario than is generally realised - a friend of a friend who volunteered on a gay switchboard once said that many of the calls came from married women who found themselves attracted to another woman - but it’s not an ‘issue’ of national concern like those TA has previously explored.

I think I’ve said before that I don’t rate the current Guardian columnist as a TA critic or as a humorist. Her predecessor, Nancy Banks-Smith was so much wiser and funnier!

  50. After my usual Sunday hourly listen, my only thought is:-
Is Riuari still at University, or is he now just speculating in certain, dodgy deals?
He is certainly not the person he once was. I describe him now, as being rather two faced, and not in a nice way. He seemed to be rather condascending to all, including Jennifer.

As for the speculation about Stella - I will wait + see/hear, before commenting -but it is an intriguing idea, and one to listen out for.
The age of Stella is not known, but I imagine that she is mid 40's. As such, as an individual female, she might just be happy with her life as a female singleton.

    1. Perhaps Stella is late 30's or early 40's only. I chose mid 40's, as she is getting on so well with Ruth + Usha. These are three, very like-minded and strong women, so it is no wonder that they are forming a friendship together.
I hope it is just that, as after all, there is nothing wrong with this.

    2. I still think that Stella, will end up with a rental lease for The Bungalow.
As Usha wisely said, a commercial rent, will make a difference to Brookfield....

  54. I wonder where Rex will end up living. My simple thoughts are:-
    a) Lodging with Stella in The Bungalow
    b) Lodging with Joy in her Beechwood home
    c) Lodging in Brookfield, when Josh then shares The Bungalow, with Stella...
I think that I can surmise that, I personally don't want Rex to disappear - Toby Yes, but not Rex.

    5. And I agree with both Pierre and Maryellen…… big trouble looming, if your prediction is correct.

I did though have a feeling, or premonition this evening about Pat and Tony.

I hope it was a random thought and does not come to fruition.

    6. Pip will be delighted with the colour scheme, such a change from the magnolia of Rickyard Cottage. She will move into the bungalow with Toby and Rosie, suggesting to the quietly fuming Josh that he picks up a few extra tins to brighten Rickyard before he moves in.

      Delete
    7. I thought that a while back, when Toby was talking to Rex about the bungalow, that he said he might not carry on living with Pip & Rosie.
In fact it sounded as though he was keen to move out and be more indépendant.

I’m certain that Josh just expects to move into the bungalow and I don’t believe for one minute that it has been actually agreed with Ruth & David.

And I am intrigued about Mike who seems to have an unhealthy food addiction, be desperate to get into everybody’s good books, and shows no sign of wanting to get back to Vicky and Bethany.

  57. If Josh is jumping the gun in respect of the bungalow, there will be big ructions at Brookfield as a result ,especially if Ruth & David have made other plans for the tenancy,Mike Tucker may find himself in the doghouse too for exceeding his brief by agreeing to change the colour scheme to Josh’s taste with the new paint.
I also wondered about how Mike was managing to demolish so much food and drink, during the course of the day and then planned to have two substantial evening meals ,curry with Roy and rabbit pie at the Bull. A heart attack waiting to happen?

  66. I thought it was Alice giving up : (
She worked so hard to make things up with Rauri who (rightly or wrongly) threw it all back in her face.
She said she wanted a divorce from Chris but hadn't actually done anything about it. Now, it's suddenly becoming a reality. Not only that, but her drinking will be made public a ll over again, and the judge could decide she wasn't safe to have access to her daughter.
I can imagine her thinking, 'I tried so hard and it did no good, what's the point?'
I am no expert at addiction, but it seems to me that Alice is trying to get better for other people. I doubt she'll kick her alcoholism for good until she learns to love and accept herself. She needs to be in a place where she wants to help herself, not simply where she wants to please other people.

  70. I wish Chris hadn't forced the issue of divorce and just let things pan out for a bit. As Portia said previously, maybe they could have gradually found their way back together but it required patience and I suppose Chris has run out of that, particularly after being rebuffed by Alice. I do hope that somehow Alice can be prevented from drinking those bottles but it seems doubtful.

Amy is Alice’s friend and I believe that young women today do speak to each other in these luvvy ways that I too find difficult to take. But even so I didn’t feel it was overdone in this instance.
She also enabled Alice to take control of her own actions by disposing of the empty bottle herself having gained Alice’s agreement to pour the vodka away.
She was kind, considerate and not judgmental. Many of the interpersonal skills Amy used will have been learned in her work as a midwife.
My personal experience of person centred treatment of any problem leads me to feel that this was a well written and well performed episode.

    5. I'm only an occasional contributor but continue to enjoy reading the comments on this blog. Cheshire Cheese's observation about the younger generation's lack of established employment raises one of my bugbears about The Archers: the totally unrealistic Ambridge economy! I've lived in an English village for almost 40 years and very few people actually work there (with hardly anyone in farming). Most get in their cars and drive to jobs in cities and towns, some quite near, some far away. And most when they become adults move away completely. In Ambridge, Brenda's situation is the realistic one!

      Delete
  83. But then there would be no further generations of Archers to justify the name of the programme and they'd have to call it something else! An everyday story of commuterfolk?

    4. Think you’ve got it in one there KP.

It was a hangover from the days of ‘old wireless ’ and has morphed into what we consider today as ‘soaps’.
It is The Archers, a tale of a farming family, their extended family, some of them also farmers, and the village that they all live in as well as some of the other residents of that village.
Many of the other residents of that village probably do go off in their cars each day to work elsewhere, but they are the silent ones.

Ex-Londoner does make a good point though that Ambridge is unrealistic, but isn’t that the point for most of us.
An unrealistic but (sometimes ) ideal vision of a community that folds itself around us.
I think that sums it up for me.

      Delete
  84. I have always liked it as a tale of a farming family. I should imagine that most of the residents of the Beechwood estate travel out of Ambridge to work.

  85. I love The Archers for a very simple reason, which is that it is NOT a typical village, today.
It is still an idyllic place, where I for one would love to live.
    1) The generation of familes stay together, well mostly.
    2) Partnerships are formed, but these always manage to find suitable properties to rent or buy, within their incomes, be it for their personal/business lives , or just both
    3) Apart from the Beechwood Estate, there are no further housing developments
    4) The farming communities are still thriving, along with some diversities eg The Brookfield Barn, The Bridge Farm Shop etc.
    5) Grey Gables and The Bull are still providing leisure, dining, drinking facilities.

    My point is:-
Long may Ambridge continue in its norn idyllic way, to keep us entertained in the best way.

  89. Didnt used to be pure escapism though. It was originally promoted as a way the government could disseminate the latest advice on agriculture to the farming community, but done in a friendly way that would keep them listening.
We heard the best way for Dan to increase his yields of wheat or the latest ideas in pig rearing
That’s why my Parents started listening, to get the latest thoughts on poultry production and which fertiliser was best for growing cabbages!

But it is far from that nowadays days, though I still regard it as a topical programme about a recognisable group of residents in a village like mine. It is most definitely not pure escapism for me!

Oh Well, it was probably worthless anyway 😪

The gist was, how The Archers has changed since its inception, as to what it meant at that time.

It is now just a story of the residents of a village, with all the Ambridge and inhabitants ups + downs, which are shown in very many different ways.

    c) Has Ruth + David seen The Bungalow, as done under Josh's colours?
    d) How will Pat, Tony, Natasha + Tom (plus sprog) settle down together?

It seems it has just one bathroom, which Natasha seems to be now monopolising.
My question is - How did they manage with Helen and her boys, Lee when he stayed over, plus Johnny when he also lived there?
There didn't seem a problem then.

    1. I suspect Natasha has more toiletries than Helen, the boys, Lee, Johny, Pat, Tony, Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all combined.

Going his own way, despite what others may say think or feel.

  102. So The Archers twins gene, has reared up again (Shula/Kenton, Lily/Freddie) This time it is with Tom + Natasha, It will be interesting if they are still living in Bridge Farm. Surely this is why they now need to find a home of their own to suit them, but then there will be no free help!
Will Pat + Tony be able cope with baby twins, alongside their own lives, such as the cows and the dairy?

    1. A moment of madness but - could Adam take over the Dairy and even Bridge Farm?

    2. Sounds like a very good idea Miriam.
      With Alice assisting perhaps.

  103. Glad to see the pink trainers back, OWiaS. There's something whimsical and slightly off-the-wall about them that suits your sense of humour.
